The Alpe-Adria cycle rou­te con­nects two worlds — the maje­s­tic Alps with the Medi­ter­ra­ne­an flair of the Adria­tic. The start­ing point is Salz­burg, the city of Mozart, sur­roun­ded by impo­sing peaks. From here, the rou­te leads south along the Salz­ach river, past his­to­ric towns such as Gol­ling and Bischofs­ho­fen and into the Gas­tein Val­ley. A high­light is the Tau­ern­schleu­sen train, which takes cyclists com­for­ta­b­ly through the mountains. 

In Car­in­thia, the val­ley widens and the cycle path leads through the idyl­lic Möll­tal val­ley to Vil­lach. The­re you will encoun­ter sou­thern flair and pro­xi­mi­ty to the lakes befo­re crossing the bor­der into Ita­ly. The cycle rou­te fol­lows the old Pont­eb­ba­na rail­road line, which is one of the most beau­tiful cycle paths in Euro­pe with its via­ducts and tun­nels. You cycle gent­ly downhill through the Canal Val­ley, past pic­tures­que towns such as Tar­vi­sio, Ven­zo­ne and Gemona. 

The clo­ser you get to the Adria­tic, the more Medi­ter­ra­ne­an the land­scape beco­mes. Vines, oli­ve trees and small Ita­li­an vil­la­ges line the rou­te. Via Udi­ne and Aqui­leia, with its Roman excava­tions, you final­ly reach the sea. The desti­na­ti­on of the tour is Gra­do, a char­ming lagoon town with a won­derful beach and Ita­li­an lifestyle.
