The Alpe-Adria cycle route connects two worlds — the majestic Alps with the Mediterranean flair of the Adriatic. The starting point is Salzburg, the city of Mozart, surrounded by imposing peaks. From here, the route leads south along the Salzach river, past historic towns such as Golling and Bischofshofen and into the Gastein Valley. A highlight is the Tauernschleusen train, which takes cyclists comfortably through the mountains.
In Carinthia, the valley widens and the cycle path leads through the idyllic Mölltal valley to Villach. There you will encounter southern flair and proximity to the lakes before crossing the border into Italy. The cycle route follows the old Pontebbana railroad line, which is one of the most beautiful cycle paths in Europe with its viaducts and tunnels. You cycle gently downhill through the Canal Valley, past picturesque towns such as Tarvisio, Venzone and Gemona.
The closer you get to the Adriatic, the more Mediterranean the landscape becomes. Vines, olive trees and small Italian villages line the route. Via Udine and Aquileia, with its Roman excavations, you finally reach the sea. The destination of the tour is Grado, a charming lagoon town with a wonderful beach and Italian lifestyle.
The Alpe-Adria cycle tour is a journey from the high mountains to the sea — varied, culturally rich and with spectacular scenery.
