Small guide: Crossing the Alps by bike

Transalp is the opportunity to cross the Alps by bike on several hundred routes and variants — from sporty and challenging to comfortable. Some sections (e.g. Innsbruck-Brenner) can also be shortened by train. Other routes run along old railroad lines, for example, and are easy to manage. In our travel descriptions, the various Transalp routes are described with the daily stages and level of difficulty. Varied with the bike.

Am I in good enough shape to cross the Alps by bike?

We prefer to relax on vacation. Sporting performance is not the main focus of our tours. No, cycle as comfortably as your constitution allows and enjoy the scenery. Dismount if necessary and simply push your bike up one or two climbs if you start to sweat. Anyone who only has their eyes on the speedometer or GPS during the route across the Alps will miss out on magical landscapes and unique views. Enjoy the routes and relax at your own pace. Ride your own bike, road bike or mountain bike, or hire a suitable bike.

What equipment do I need for a Transalp tour?

We offer both mountain bike tours and tours that can be ridden on a “normal” touring bike. If you don’t want to do the Trans-Alp tour on your own bike, that’s no problem. You are welcome to book a rental bike with us as an additional service. In addition to bikes with 7‑speed gears (also with back-pedal brakes on request), mountain bikes and e‑bikes can also be hired. Of course, we also take care of the return transportation of the bikes. All you have to do when you arrive at the starting point is get on your bike and set off.

What belongs in your luggage?

Feuer und Eis provides you with a comprehensive information package with maps and tour descriptions. You can download the GPS data separately from the Internet. Our recommendation for your packing list:

  • Backpack (daypack) or saddle bag
  • Drinking bottle
  • ID, EC card and cash
  • Sun cream
  • Digital camera and smartphone with charger
  • Small first aid kit for on the go (plasters, disinfectant)
  • Sunglasses
  • Bicycle helmet

If you are riding your own bike, we recommend that you also pack the following equipment:

  • Spare tube or tire repair kit/patch kit
  • Castle
  • Bicycle lamp
  • Multitool
  • Air pump
  • Cable ties and adhesive tape

A transalpine tour, a crossing of the Alps, along the Alpe-Adria-Trail or wherever you want to go, our routes are ideal for you to ride. The best preparation and elaboration of the route offer you the perfect overview of your trip.
