Cycling travel trends 2025: On the water or in the mountains, by pedal power or e‑power?

Share article:

In addition to hiking, cycling tours are also one of our favorite activities on vacation. So why not go on a cycling trip? But which of the many routes is the right one? A leisurely pace or ambitious altitude meters? Normal bike or e‑bike? A circular, long-distance or rally tour? We have summarized the most exciting options and their advantages and provide suitable tours to go with them. So there are no more doubts about your next adventure on two wheels!

1. e‑bike tours:

The demand for e‑bikes continues unabated — and for good reasons: On the one hand, electric bikes make it easier for beginner cyclists to get started and allow them to cover longer distances and altitudes without reaching their limits. On the other hand, e‑bikes also support advanced riders by providing the necessary energy reserve when things get more critical on sporty routes.

The KAT Bike Trail in Austria is a special destination for e‑bike fans. Here you can enjoy the impressive nature of the Kitzbühel Alps while mountain biking, even on the steeper sections — by relying on the support of an e‑bike. The multi-day route from the Feuer und Eis Touristik portfolio “KAT Bike E‑NJOY” is particularly suitable for e‑mountain bikers with basic technical riding skills and bikers with a good level of fitness. Over five days, the route leads along picturesque paths between Mariastein and Fieberbrunn along the box seats, covering 160 kilometers and over 3,700 meters in altitude through the Tyrolean mountains. The first three stages are mostly on gravel, forest and asphalt roads, while the last two stages offer alternative single trails to suit your mood.

Tip: Be sure to plan a swim stop at the romantic Pillersee lake before heading to Fieberbrunn.

2. bike tours on the water

Rivers are ideal companions for relaxed cycle tours and quickly provide much longed-for cooling, especially in summer. They also offer constantly changing, picturesque views of nature as well as great opportunities for short breaks. In addition to the calming and relaxing effect of water, rivers were and are important trade routes and have shaped cities and regions significantly. Numerous historical sites, impressive bridges, old mills and castles are waiting to be discovered on cycle tours along rivers.

If you want to be enchanted by the varied river landscapes, we recommend the “Isar Cycle Path: Classic” route. An ice-cold, turquoise wild river, the Isar starts at Scharnitz in the Bavarian Alps and then flows via Mittenwald to the cosmopolitan city of Munich and into the Danube. There are numerous sights and bathing lakes along the way — and the nearest beer garden is usually not far away either… In seven days, you cover around 270 kilometers on our cycle tour until you reach your destination. Perfect for cyclists who want to experience both culture and nature, or for anyone who doesn’t want to miss out on a cycling vacation in particularly hot summer months.

3. tourist bike tours

For those who also want to experience culture on an active vacation, touring bike tours are the right choice. Here, sightseeing is done for the development of the mind and spirit, while the body is also steeled. Perfect multitasking!

If you are looking for the complete package of a Mediterranean climate, traditional villages and picturesque landscapes, Feuer und Eis Touristik has just what you are looking for with the “South Tyrol — Just like that” cycle tour. Known for its excellent regional delicacies and rich history, South Tyrol also scores highly with its well-developed cycle paths. This eight-day circular tour leads over 300 easy kilometers through particularly beautiful and varied landscapes — from the eastern Puster Valley and the Dolomites to the provincial capital of Bolzano and on to the legendary Lake Kaltern, the spa town of Merano and the Vinschgau Valley. The Jaufen Pass is easily reached by shuttle, from there the route continues to Sterzing and back to the episcopal city of Brixen.

Tip: This tour can also be cycled by e‑bike for even more enjoyment.

4. star and round tours

If you like flexibility and variety, you will be a fan of star bike tours and circular bike tours. Both variants have the advantage that the starting point and destination are identical, which makes arrival and departure easier. The star-shaped variant in particular allows for maximum individuality, as a single accommodation serves as a base camp and the destinations for each trip can be chosen flexibly.

If you are looking for a beautiful circular tour, we recommend the “Allgäu Cycle Tour: Classic” by Feuer und Eis Touristik. The Allgäu Cycle Tour is a 476-kilometre long-distance cycle route that is all about enjoying cycling through the region with its stories, personalities and different landscapes. Mainly on asphalt, the route leads through six districts in Bavaria, neighboring Baden-Württemberg and Tyrol. A real experience for anyone who enjoys discovering new things in familiar travel regions. Two axes — the Iller and Allgäu cycle paths — ensure maximum individuality on this route, resulting in a total of nine possible routes. This means that every cyclist can find the route that suits them best. In addition, more than 50 stations along the route guarantee maximum flexibility, while a comprehensive network of e‑bike rental and charging stations round off the offer.

Note: This fire and ice offer can also be booked with a dog.

For anyone looking for a beautiful star bike tour, we recommend the “Dolomites Valley Cycle Route Star Tour”. Striking mountain backdrops such as the Three Peaks and the beautiful Dobbiaco Lake can be admired on this route, which runs along easy valley cycle paths at the foot of the Dolomites without having to climb many meters in altitude. The best thing is that a hotel in Alta Pusteria becomes the daily starting point, and every day a different route awaits to the most beautiful places in the region, for example to Sesto, Gies or along the former Dolomite railroad line to Cortina d’Ampezzo. Another leads along the Drau cycle path, a real classic, from Dobbiaco to Lienz in East Tyrol. The program leaves plenty of room for individual design and guarantees a good time for everyone, whether ambitious or pleasure-oriented.
