Small signpost: Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path

The Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path runs through various interesting stages in Bavaria. The start of the cycle path is in the town and island of the same name, Lindau. The tour takes you through the varied landscapes of Bavaria all the way to Lake Königssee, which lies majestically in the middle of the Berchtesgadener Land Alps. As you cycle, you have a wonderful view of the Alpine panorama with its lakes and romantic villages that are typical of this region. The route also takes you past some of the imposing castles that King Ludwig II had built in his time, such as the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle.

Some sights along the routes

Picture-book landscapes and the “Bavarian Sea”

The first stop on the stage after setting off from Lindau is Hohenschwangau, for example, which is home to what is probably Germany’s most famous postcard motif: Neuschwanstein Castle, commissioned by King Ludwig II. Also worth seeing in this area is the Wieskirche, which is located a little off the cycle path near Steingaden and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Further along the route, you pass the Benedictine monastery, which is well worth a visit with its interesting 1250-year history. The route continues to Bad Tölz on the Isar and then through the Upper Bavarian picture-book landscape to Tegernsee, Schliersee, Bad Feilnbach and Chiemsee. There are always exciting things for you to discover here. You should take some time for the stopover on the stage at Lake Chiemsee, which is often referred to as the “Bavarian Sea”. From Prien or Gstadt, you can take a boat to the Fraueninsel on Lake Chiemsee and, after circling the lake, visit the Herreninsel, where you will find another imposing castle from the time of King Ludwig II. The Lake Constance-Königssee cycle route continues via Traunstein to Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden. Lake Königssee, the destination of the cycle tour (with the village of Schönau), lies in the middle of the alpine landscape of the Berchtesgaden National Park and is therefore a truly crowning finale to the cycle tour. The Lake Constance Cycle Path can also be extended to Salzburg with the subsequent Mozart Cycle Path.
