The most beautiful places for hiking & cross-country skiing in the Dolomites, in the Salzkammergut or in Bavaria

Soon it will be that time again. Glistening ice crystals, warming rays of sunshine and only the snow crunching underfoot. The air is clear, the mountain peaks are bathed in brilliant white. Winter hiking slows you down and relaxes you wonderfully — as a side effect, you train your whole body in a gentle way. Whether on groomed, secured trails or with snowshoes on marked routes in open terrain — this experience will stay with you long after your vacation. Cross-country skiing is absolutely on trend — whether classic as a pure winter pleasure and as an alternative to skiing or skating as a workout. Regardless of the technique, it is always gentler than speeding down the slopes. A selection of the most beautiful snow-sure destinations for active vacations in the Feuer und Eis offer:

Winter hiking in a dream setting

A trip to the Sesto Dolomites is ideal for particularly impressive winter hikes — the snow-sure region in Alta Pusteria enchants with idyllic landscapes around the beautiful Sesto Valley or the breathtaking Braies Valley — you can experience tranquillity on the Prato Piazza high plateau. Lake lovers will also get their money’s worth: in addition to the famous Pragser Wildsee lake, the Toblacher & Misurinasee lakes await at the foot of the Three Peaks, all three in the immediate vicinity of the vacation resort.

Bavaria can also have snow. Winter delights await nearby — the Tegernsee Valley offers sunny high-altitude trails over gentle slopes and through sparse forests with glistening lake views and regional culinary experiences. Why not combine a panoramic hike with a visit to the ducal fish farm in Wildbad Kreuth and the Tegernseer Land natural cheese dairy? Cross-country skiing fans get their money’s worth here

Gliding through quiet forests and sunny valleys on two pairs of cross-country skis is probably the most beautiful form of gentle winter sport. Without the stress of the slopes and queuing at the lift — you can do quiet laps instead of rushing. These three vacation tips take you to regions that couldn’t be more different and yet have something in common: magical cross-country ski trails of all levels of difficulty and plenty of snow.

In the heart of the Salzkammergut, very special mountain and lake views await you on the cross-country trails through snow-covered landscapes. The Dachstein accompanies you on the Panorama Nova high-altitude trail in Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt and the entire snow-sure Gosau Valley can also be explored on cross-country trails, with the rugged rocky peaks of the Gosaukamm always in view. Culinary insider tip: at the edge of the cross-country ski trails in the Gosau Vorder, Mitter and Hintertal valleys there are refreshment stops with sunny terraces and regional cuisine with sinful pastries. A detour to the nearby imperial town of Bad Ischl is included, as here too a cross-country skiing dream awaits in the quiet Rettenbachtal valley — be sure to plan in the alpine hut delicacies as a reward.

In the winter hiking paradise of Alta Pusteria, there are over 200 kilometers of cross-country and skating trails in a spectacular Dolomite setting for all tastes and fitness levels. Particularly beautiful: the quiet Val Fiscalina with the stunning panorama of the Sesto sundial and the idyllically situated Talschlusshütte hut (be sure to try the buckwheat cake) or the sunny Valle di Casies, where the trail leads past picturesque farmhouses. Here, too, rustic inns invite you to stop for a bite to eat. From Dobbiaco, the World Cup route takes you along the lake via the former Dolomite railway line into the Höhlenstein Valley to the view of the Three Peaks — if you want, you can even continue to the Olympic town of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Can it be more exclusive? In the Engadin, the cross-country ski trails even lead over frozen lakes. Explore the Swiss high valley from Maloja via the car-free Fex Valley, the Roseg Valley and on to Zernez. Follow in the footsteps of the famous Engadin ski marathon into the high and side valleys, framed by mighty 4000-metre peaks and impressive glaciers.

Once everything please — Winter active, Edition South Tyrol

For those who love variety on vacation, we recommend the Feuer und Eis winter activity week in South Tyrol. In the picturesque mountain scenery of the Pfitsch Valley, north-east of Sterzing and a stone’s throw from the Brenner Pass, everything from cross-country skiing to snowshoeing and tobogganing is on the program. The Pfitsch high valley and the Ridnaun valley are considered insider tips with guaranteed snow. And what should not be missed is a cozy torchlight hike with mulled wine in the evening — this highlight is of course also included. That’s the best way to enjoy winter.
