Feuer und Eis partner tour

Alpe Adria cycle path from Salzburg to Trieste

from 1.239,- per person

Crossing the Alps to the Adriatic in a week sounds like hard work! It is not quite as strenuous if you choose the Alpe-Adria cycle path. Here, the crossing of the Alps is also feasible for leisure cyclists, as the ascent to the main Alpine ridge is divided into two daily stages, the last part of which is crossed by train. On your journey you will pass the idyllic Salzach Valley, Bad Gastein, the impressive high mountain landscape of the Hohe Tauern, the sunny Drau Valley and the wildly rugged Kanaltal. Cycle comfortably along the Via Julia Augusta via Palmanova and Aquileia to the Grado lagoon and on to the Habsburg city of Trieste.

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Journey to Salzburg
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Individual arrival at the starting hotel in Salzburg. A cycle tour could not start more impressively than in the Mozart city of Salzburg. One baroque highlight follows the next in the beautiful old town. Take a few Mozartkugeln with you on your journey to the sea.
Day 2
Salzburg Bischofshofen/St. Johann
Distanz: 60 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
You leave the city with a view of Hohensalzburg Fortress. The mountains are already visible in the distance. The first section takes you along the Salzach. On the way you pass the former summer residence of the Salzburg prince-bishops, Hellbrunn Palace. The extraordinary water features have been delighting young and old for more than 400 years. The journey continues along the Tauern Cycle Path towards Hallein, known for its crooked town houses and above all for its white gold — salt. Another highlight is the waterfall in Golling.
Day 3
Bischofshofen/St. Johann Bad Gastein
Distanz: 55 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
The journey continues through the tranquil Gastein Valley. Until the 20th century, it was only accessible via mountain paths and narrow roads. Framed by the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, you cycle along the Gasteiner Ache. Passing Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, you reach the famous spa town of Bad Gastein. The Montecarlo of the Alps, as the town is often called, is known for its many magnificent hotels from the Bel Epouque period, which characterize the townscape. The main attraction is the Gastein waterfall, which is fed by a total of 17 springs.
Day 4
Bad Gastein Villach (approx. 79 km plus train ride — mostly downhill)
Distanz: 79 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
In Böckstein you board the train to get through the Tauern lock to Mallnitz. Today you cycle along the Möll river through the impressive high mountain landscape. This section of the cycle path is also known as the Glockner Cycle Path. It is mostly slightly downhill and leads through the Hohe Tauern National Park. From there, the Drau cycle path leads to Spittal with its famous Renaissance castle Porcia. The stage ends in the second largest city in Carinthia. Villach is not only known for its carnival, but also for its church day. There are also numerous sights waiting for you. If you still have enough time, we recommend a swim in one of the lakes around the city.

Distanz: 85 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Following the River Gail, you leave Villach behind you and soon say goodbye to Austria and hello to Italy. In the border triangle of Italy, Austria and Slovenia lies the Canal Valley, with the Italian border town of Tarvisio at its center. Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have lived together here for centuries, as all three major European language families — Germanic, Romanic and Slavic — meet here directly. Continuing through the Kanaltal valley, you can admire the beauty of the Friulian Alpine region from the saddle, with its unspoiled, untouched nature and extensive forests. If you wish, you can take the train (ticket not included) to Tarvisio or Ugovizza and thus shorten part of the route.
Day 6
Venzone/Udine area
Distanz: 55 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Located at the southern end of the Canal Valley and at the foothills of the Julian Alps, Gemona del Friuli is considered one of the most beautiful historic towns in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The townscape is dominated by the majestic Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, which is certainly worth a visit. Today’s stage is dominated by wine. Hills full of vines line your path and invite you to taste a drop or two. Characterized by Venetian influences, Udine exudes peace and tranquillity; you can admire important late Gothic and Renaissance buildings over a coffee in the piazza or while strolling through the city centre.
