Feuer und Eis partner tour

Alpe Adria from Salzburg to Grado | Across the Alps by e‑bike | WDR

from 1.469,- per person

In May 2019, the program Mit dem E‑Bike über die Alpen was broadcast in the Wunderschön series on WDR. Marco Schreyl, the presenter, cycled from Salzburg to Grado by e‑bike. The tour was conceived and organized by the Feuer und Eis partner (partner tour) together with the WDR team. Now you can travel in the footsteps of Marco Schreyl, the tour is exactly the same as the original on TV except for minor differences: one week, 420 kilometers, two countries. There is a lot to discover along the way: rugged mountains, the wild and romantic Gastein Valley with its thundering waterfalls, crystal-clear Carinthian lakes, dolce vita in Italy and, of course, the sea at the end. This cross-border cycle route has been in existence since 2012 and is fast becoming a classic!

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Individual arrival
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Individual arrival at the starting hotel in Salzburg. A cycle tour could not start more impressively than in the Mozart city of Salzburg. One baroque highlight follows the next in the beautiful old town. Take a few Mozartkugeln with you on your journey to the sea.
Day 2
Salzburg Werfenweng
Distanz: 50 km Höhe (+): 677m Höhe (-): 172m
You leave the city with a view of Hohensalzburg Fortress. The mountains are already visible in the distance. The first section takes you along the Salzach. On the way you pass the former summer residence of the Salzburg prince-bishops, Hellbrunn Palace. The extraordinary water features have been delighting young and old for more than 400 years. The journey continues along the Tauern cycle path towards Hallein, known for its crooked town houses and above all for its white gold — salt. Below the Tennengebirge you cycle towards your stage destination Werfenweng, but first you have to overcome a few meters of altitude. The mighty Hohenwerfen Castle from the 11th century towers high above you.
Day 3
Werfenweng — Bad Gastein
Distanz: 60 km Höhe (+): 771m Höhe (-): 613m
The journey continues through the tranquil Gastein Valley. Until the 20th century, it was only accessible via mountain paths and narrow roads. Framed by the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, you cycle along the Gasteiner Ache. The Montecarlo of the Alps, as Bad Gastein is often called, is known for its many magnificent hotels from the Bel Epoque period, which characterize the townscape. The main attraction is the Gastein waterfall, which is fed by a total of 17 springs and provides an extra portion of health. If you are early enough, you can take the cable car to the summit and enjoy the Alpine panorama, as Marco Schreyl did on the show.
Day 4
Bad Gastein Millstätter See (with train ride)
Distanz: 70 km Höhe (+): 267m Höhe (-): 709m
Instead of following the original Alpe Adria cycle path, we suggest an alternative through the tranquil Dösental valley. An 8 km long descent on the old railroad line leads down to the Glockner Cycle Path and along the Möll. The varied landscape ensures that you won’t get bored. Today’s stage destination is Millstatt on the lake of the same name. At around 141 m, Lake Millstatt is the deepest lake in Carinthia.
Day 5
Lake Millstätter See Tarvisio
Distanz: 78 km Höhe (+): 685m Höhe (-): 547m
Along the lake with its crystal-clear water, which is even of drinking water quality, you cycle around the lake for a while before climbing a small ridge that takes you into the Drau Valley. After this detour, the Alpe-Adria route leads you along the leisurely flowing Drau, where surprises await you time and again. The route soon changes direction and heads south. First along the Gail, which is ideal for cooling off on hot summer days, you cross the border into Bella Italia. The small town of Tarvisio is located in the border triangle of Austria, Slovenia and Italy.
Day 6
Tarvisio Udine (with train ride)
Distanz: 80 km Höhe (+): 334m Höhe (-): 957m
Although the fifth stage is one of the longest on this trip, there are hardly any climbs to overcome. Strengthened with a cappuccino and brioche, you start the stage through the Canal Valley. It is framed by the majestic peaks of the Julian Alps. You cycle briskly along the disused railroad line through a total of 22 tunnels. Don’t miss out on the delicacies along the route. Shortly before Venzone, you cross the Tagliamento, one of the last natural rivers in Europe, before reaching the Friulian Plain. Not only does the vegetation change, but the temperatures continue to rise. Enjoy the evening in the Piazza della Libertà in Udine, with its typical Italian flair.
Day 7
Udine Grado
Distanz: 55 km Höhe (+): 1m Höhe (-): 216m
You continue your journey cycling through the vineyards. The first highlight of today’s stage is Palmanova with its star-shaped fortress dating back to the 16th century. Across the hexagonal main square, the route leads out of the Unesco World Heritage Site and to Aquileia. Built in 180 BC, it was one of the most important economic centers of the Roman Empire. Numerous excavation sites and a huge floor mosaic in the Byzantine basilica are vivid witnesses to this period. A 5 km long straight leads through the lagoon to Grado, the destination of your journey. After a total of 420 km, you have reached the sea and the Italian Riviera.
Day 8
Individual departure
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Individual departure or possibility of extension
