Crossing the Alps from Garmisch to Sterzing — Leisurely

from 1.145,- per person

Garmisch at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain and Sterzing, Italy’s northernmost town, are linked by one of the most fascinating Alpine crossings. The impressive start takes you along the thundering waterfalls of the Partnachklamm gorge and past Elmau Castle towards Mittenwald. You ascend through the wild rocky landscape of the Karwendel to experience one of the most impressive views of the main Alpine ridge on the ridge of the Nordkette above the rooftops of Innsbruck. Past the striking Serles, the route takes you through the Stubai Alps into the Gschnitztal valley, with views of the glaciers of the Zillertal Alps, and on to the Obernberger valley. At the lonely Sandjöchl at an altitude of 2,165 m, once only used by smugglers, you cross the main Alpine ridge to South Tyrol. Via the Dolomieuweg trail, you finally reach the summit of the Rosskopf, from where you can comfortably take the cable car down to the medieval streets of Sterzing.

Itinerary / Stages

At the foot of the Zugspitze: Welcome to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Distanz: 6 km Höhe (+): 50m Höhe (-): 50m
Individual arrival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the starting point of your crossing of the Alps. We recommend arriving a little earlier in the day and taking a short stroll through the streets and alleyways of the spa town, which is surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. Or you can use the time for a short excursion to the foot of Germany’s highest mountain and take a walk along the Eibsee lake. If the weather is fine and you have enough time, then you should definitely take the cable car to the summit of the 2,962 m high Zugspitze and admire the panorama of the Alps from Germany’s highest point. You will receive information and tips with your travel documents.
Through the Partnachklamm gorge past Elmau Castle to Ferchensee lake
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 825m Höhe (-): 500m
After breakfast in the morning, your first stage of the Alpine crossing across Werdenfelser Land begins. An unforgettable highlight awaits you right at the start: from the famous ski jumps in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the path leads into the fascinating water and rock scenery of the Partnachklamm gorge. Through rock tunnels and galleries, the path winds its way along thundering waterfalls and spraying spray, which have cut into the rock up to 80 m deep. From the end of the gorge, you climb up to Eckbauer (1,237 m) and enjoy the view of the Wetterstein mountains opposite. Your route continues past the Elmauer Alm and the famous Elmau Castle to the idyllic Ferchensee lake.
The wild rocky world of the Karwendel and Tyrol’s capital city
Distanz: 8 km Höhe (+): 1000m Höhe (-): 0m
Early in the morning, a cab takes you deep into the Karwendel to the rustic Möslalm (1,262 m). From here you start the ascent through the wild and romantic Mandltal valley, surrounded by impressive rock faces. The route climbs steadily up to the ridge of the Nordkette, where you suddenly find yourself above the rooftops of Innsbruck. The Inntal valley stretches out below you with the sea of houses of the Tyrolean capital, dominated in the background by the glacier peaks of the Zillertal and Stubai Alps. You reach the Hafelekar cable car station (2,269 m) via the Goetheweg. From here you float down to the old town of Innsbruck. After a short walk, you can admire the world-famous Golden Roof before boarding the bus to the Stubai Valley.
Along the Serles from the Stubai Valley into the Gschnitz Valley
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 750m Höhe (-): 1145m
The imposing Serles, the 2,717 m high cornerstone of the Stubai Valley, catches the eye of every traveler heading south on the Brenner freeway. Because of its characteristic shape, the peak is also known as the high altar of Tyrol. Your hike leads along the foot of this mighty mountain massif from the Stubai Valley into the Gschnitz Valley. First you reach Maria Waldrast, a monastery at an altitude of 1,638 m and one of the oldest and highest places of pilgrimage in the Alps. Surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery, you then climb up to the Blaserhütte (2,180 m), the highlight of today’s tour and ideal for a break. After enjoying the fantastic view, you descend into the idyllic Gschnitztal valley. The next two nights are spent in a hotel in Steinach am Brenner, which is also an opportunity to take a rest day or a break.
With a magnificent mountain panorama over to the Obernbergtal valley
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 950m Höhe (-): 800m
Today’s section of your crossing of the Alps promises an incomparable view. You cross another Alpine valley further south, towards the main ridge. From the Gschnitztal you ascend to the Trunahütte and continue uphill to the Eggerjoch (2,132 m). From here you hike with gentle ascents and descents across alpine meadows and past countless alpine roses along the broad, treeless mountain ridge. An impressive panorama opens up before you: the majestic mountain peaks of the Tribulaune in front of you, the Brenner mountains to the south, the icy peaks of the Zillertal Alps to the east and the Stubai Alps with the striking summit of the Habicht to the north. The trail then leads you past the picturesque Lichtsee lake and down into the Obernbergtal valley.
On smugglers’ trails over the main Alpine ridge to South Tyrol
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 735m Höhe (-): 1075m
The Obernbergtal, also known as the Valley of Silence, is one of the most pristine mountain valleys in Tyrol. At the end of the valley, you begin your ascent to the main Alpine ridge. Your first stop is Lake Obernberg, surrounded by the imposing rock faces of the mighty Tribulaun. Here you will experience an impressive natural monument that reflects the beauty of the surroundings. On quiet paths, once frequented by smugglers, you climb up to the Sandjöchl at 2,165m above sea level. Here you cross the border into Italy, enter South Tyrol and cross the main Alpine ridge. The descent takes you down into the picturesque Pflersch Valley, your destination for today.
The finale: From the Pflersch Valley to the Rosskopf above Sterzing
Distanz: 8 km Höhe (+): 450m Höhe (-): 300m
On your final stage, a cable car once again makes the first few meters of altitude easier. From Ladurns in the idyllic Pflerschtal valley, you head up to the Ladurner Alm. The imposing Pflerscher Tribulaun with its striking rocky peak rises up opposite. High above the Pflerschtal valley, you follow the Dolomieuweg trail, named after the geologist Dolomieu, who discovered the dolomite rock named after him here at the end of the 18th century. Via the Vallmingalm you reach the Rosskopf (2,189 m), from where you can enjoy the breathtaking view from the Zillertal Alps to the Dolomites. Almost directly from the summit, the cable car takes you down into the valley to Sterzing. In the picturesque medieval alleyways and arcades, you can celebrate your successful crossing of the Alps with a glass of wine.
Farewell to South Tyrol and the crossing of the Alps
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to Sterzing and the picturesque South Tyrol. A shuttle bus will take you back to the starting point of your unforgettable Alpine crossing in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Use the time to review the eventful hikes of the last few days and remember the impressive impressions.
