A more rela­xed alter­na­ti­ve to the popu­lar Tegern­see-Ster­zing Alpi­ne crossing: Pic­tures­que gor­ge hikes—excellent 3- to 4‑star hotels—breakfast—Schlegeis trans­fer and return trans­fer from Ster­zing to Spit­zing­see. Expe­ri­ence a new, more rela­xed ver­si­on of the Alpi­ne crossing: The first sec­tion of this rou­te is more peaceful and less deman­ding than the clas­sic Tegernsee–Sterzing rou­te. You’ll start at Spit­zing­see and hike through idyl­lic gor­ges, accom­pa­nied by the soot­hing sound of babb­ling brooks, into the Alp­bach­tal val­ley. On pic­tures­que trails, you’ll enjoy the pan­o­r­amic views befo­re rea­ching the Zil­ler­tal and final­ly crossing the main Alpi­ne ridge to dis­co­ver the impres­si­ve natu­ral beau­ty of South Tyrol. You’ll stay in sel­ect 3- and 4‑star hotels, whe­re you can ful­ly rech­ar­ge for the upco­ming stages. Vom einem Panoramaweg aus hat man eine grandiose Aussicht auf das Zillertal. Im Vordergrund sind hügelige Wiesen und alte Bauernhäuser und im Hintergrund die hohen Berge.

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Indi­vi­du­al arri­val at Spit­zing­see by approx. 2 p.m. and hike to the Valepp
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 10m Höhe (-): 220m
Wel­co­me to Spit­zing­see, an idyl­lic moun­tain lake with drin­king water qua­li­ty. To get in the mood for your crossing of the Alps, hike for approx. 2 hours along the old tracks of the nar­row-gau­ge rail­road to Manu­el Neu­er’s Forst­haus Valepp, whe­re you will spend the night sur­roun­ded by natu­re. If the­re is no avai­la­bi­li­ty the­re, spend the night at Spit­zing­see and hike the sec­tion to Valepp tomor­row instead. 
Day 2
Valepp — Impe­ri­al House
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 170m Höhe (-): 350m
From the fores­ter’s lodge, you hike through a blos­so­ming alpi­ne land­scape. A litt­le later you enter the forest and fol­low a quiet path, first ele­va­ted abo­ve the val­ley and later down to idyl­lic bathing bays. Pas­sing the his­to­ric Erz­her­zog-Johann-Klau­se, you con­ti­nue along the Bran­den­ber­ger Ache befo­re crossing the impo­sing Kai­ser­klamm gor­ge and rea­ching the Kai­ser­haus. From here, a public bus will take you to Kramsach or Brix­legg, depen­ding on your over­night destination. 
Day 3
Kai­ser­haus — Kramsach/Brixlegg
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 170m Höhe (-): 350m
Our trans­fer takes you com­for­ta­b­ly back to the Kai­ser­haus. From the­re, you fol­low a quiet forest path that mean­ders along the river down into the val­ley. In Pin­egg, you chan­ge to a pic­tures­que hiking trail, which offers you won­derful views of the sur­roun­ding moun­ta­ins and leads you to the ent­rance of the famous Tie­fen­bach­klamm gor­ge. Well secu­red and always along the rock faces, you hike over bridges and enjoy the spec­ta­cu­lar sce­n­ery of the gor­ge over a distance of around 6 kilo­me­ters. At the end of the gor­ge, you can eit­her take a forest path or a bus to your over­night accommodation. 
Day 4
Kramsach/Brixlegg — Fügen
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 180m Höhe (-): 690m
Depen­ding on whe­re you are stay­ing, take the bus to Brix­legg. From the­re, fol­low the water hiking trail in Alp­bach­tal, which takes you across mea­dows and past char­ming, flower-deco­ra­ted farm­hou­ses to Reith. Here you can eit­her take the cable car or climb the Reit­her­ko­gel on foot. From the top, you can enjoy a breath­ta­king view over the Zil­ler­tal. The trail then leads you lei­su­re­ly downhill on a road with litt­le traf­fic, always with the impres­si­ve pan­ora­ma in front of you, to Fügen. 
Day 5
Fügen — Spiel­joch — Hochfügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 350m Höhe (-): 740m
After a lei­su­re­ly break­fast, make your way from your accom­mo­da­ti­on in Fügen, the first vaca­ti­on regi­on in the Zil­ler­tal, to the Spiel­joch­bahn val­ley sta­ti­on. The gon­do­la takes you up to almost 1,850 meters, whe­re a breath­ta­king pan­o­r­amic view of the Zil­ler­tal, the Kar­wen­del and Rofan moun­ta­ins, the Kitz­bü­hel Alps and the Kai­ser Moun­ta­ins awaits you. An idyl­lic hiking trail, lined with moun­tain pines, alpi­ne roses, Swiss stone pines and gra­ni­te rocks, leads you to the Gart Alm, whe­re you have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to enjoy the famous Kai­ser­schmar­ren. The rou­te then con­ti­nues over the Loas­sat­tel to the Alpen­gast­haus Loas. After a well-ear­ned break, you con­ti­nue your hike on a shady path that takes you to the win­ter sports mec­ca of Hoch­fü­gen, your desti­na­ti­on for today. 
Day 6
Hoch­fü­gen — Melch­bo­den — Zillertal
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 840m Höhe (-): 300m
Today you hike through an extra­or­di­na­ry alpi­ne regi­on, which offers a fasci­na­ting view of tra­di­tio­nal alpi­ne far­ming — a cul­tu­ral asset that has beco­me rare in the Alps. Pas­sing rocks for­med by gla­ciers, you reach the Sidan­joch. Spec­ta­cu­lar views of the Inn­tal val­ley, the Kar­wen­del moun­ta­ins and the Tux Alps await you at the near­by Rast­ko­gel­hüt­te. After a short ascent to the Mit­ter­wands­kopf, a pic­tures­que path leads along a moun­tain ridge, past impres­si­ve ice-age rock for­ma­ti­ons and small moun­tain lakes, all the way to Melch­bo­den. From the­re, a public bus takes you com­for­ta­b­ly down to the val­ley via the Zil­ler­ta­ler Höhen­stra­ße. Depen­ding on whe­re you are stay­ing, you can then take the bus or the Zil­ler­tal­bahn to Aschau or Mayrhofen. 
Day 7
Mayrhofen/Aschau — Schle­geis — Pfitsch — Sterzing
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 820m
Today is the big moment: You cross the main Alpi­ne ridge, the high­light of your crossing of the Alps. In the mor­ning, our trans­fer will take you to the Schle­geis reser­voir at 1,800 meters abo­ve sea level, whe­re your stage beg­ins. The impo­sing dam wall, which was built in the 1970s for the ener­gy and water sup­p­ly, dams one of the lar­gest reser­voirs in Aus­tria, fed by the migh­ty gla­ciers in the sur­roun­ding area. The modera­te­ly ascen­ding hiking trail leads you through a spec­ta­cu­lar land­scape with rus­hing streams, impres­si­ve water­falls and morai­ne fields for­med by gla­ciers. Short­ly befo­re the Pfit­scher­joch­haus, whe­re you cross the bor­der into Ita­ly and South Tyrol, you reach the hig­hest point of the stage at 2,275 meters. After pas­sing the main Alpi­ne ridge, you des­cend over gent­le alpi­ne pas­tu­res and through shady mixed forests into the Pfitsch­tal val­ley and hike on to St. Jakob. From the­re, a bus will take you com­for­ta­b­ly to your accom­mo­da­ti­on in Sterzing. 
Day 8
Return trans­fer to Spitzingsee
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
In the mor­ning, you will be picked up by our shut­tle and taken to Lake Tegern­see. The­re you will board the con­nec­ting trans­fer that will take you back to Spit­zing­see. You are also wel­co­me to get off at Schlier­see sta­ti­on. Alter­na­tively, you can extend your stay.

Return trans­fer
Our Alpi­ne Crossing shut­tle bus takes you com­for­ta­b­ly from Ster­zing back to Tegern­see in the mor­ning and our con­nec­ting trans­fer con­ti­nues to Spit­zing­see. Depen­ding on the volu­me of traf­fic, arri­val at Lake Tegern­see is sche­du­led bet­ween 11 am and 1 pm, and arri­val at Lake Spit­zing­see at around 12–14 pm. Plea­se plan your onward jour­ney with suf­fi­ci­ent buf­fer time due to the risk of traf­fic jams. Par­ti­ci­pan­ts can also be drop­ped off at Schlier­see station.
Get­ting There
By car: Coming from the west via the A8 high­way to the Weyarn exit, from the­re through Mies­bach, Haus­ham and Schlier­see to the B307. From the east: Via the A8 high­way to the Irschen­berg exit and through the Leit­z­ach­tal val­ley to Spit­zing­see. TRAIN: Hour­ly con­nec­tions with the BRB from Munich main sta­ti­on in the direc­tion of Bay­risch­zell to Fisch­hau­sen-Neu­haus sta­ti­on. From the­re, take bus no. 9562 to the ter­mi­nus Spit­zing­see Kirche. 
Natu­re of the Tour
The tour is modera­te­ly dif­fi­cult and requi­res a good basic level of fit­ness and sure­foo­ted­ness. It runs along very well-main­tai­ned hiking trails, forest roads and paths. The­re are no clim­bing pas­sa­ges or hea­vi­ly expo­sed sec­tions. You hike through gor­ges twice, crossing bridges and wal­king along the rock face abo­ve the gor­ge — you can bypass the stages if you are very afraid of heights. If you are not fit or the wea­ther is not play­ing ball, it is usual­ly pos­si­ble to tra­vel to the next stage desti­na­ti­on by public trans­port or cab. 
Other Infor­ma­ti­on
To ensu­re a stress-free start to your trip, we gene­ral­ly recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening. Some tours begin as ear­ly as noon; in tho­se cases, we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re. We’d be hap­py to book an extra night for you right away. Your indi­vi­du­al return trip takes place on the last day of the trip. The distances lis­ted are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al distances tra­ve­led. This trip is not sui­ta­ble for peo­p­le with limi­t­ed mobility. 
Note for rail travelers
If you are lea­ving by train, we recom­mend that you only use the return trans­fer to Gmund am Tegern­see and depart direct­ly from here by train. Plea­se let us know if you do not need the con­nec­ting trans­fer to Spitzingsee.
