Itinerary / Stages

Arrival by 1 p.m. at the latest at the Alpenüberquerer parking lot or Gmund train station, hike to Tegernsee, Bad Wiessee or Kreuth
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 180m Höhe (-): 180m
Your Alpine crossing adventure begins on the day you arrive. After the start of your tour, which we recommend for around lunchtime, in Gmund, the first half-day hike takes you along the Tegernsee High Trail, which extends around 100 meters above the northern shore, to the intermediate destination of Tegernsee (town). Breathtaking scenery and fantastic views await you on this easier introductory stage. So don’t forget to have your camera or smartphone ready to capture the first panoramic images. A visit to the brewery right on the lake is also a must. Afterwards, you have the option of taking the unique rowing ferry to Rottach-Egern (unfortunately dogs are not allowed) and walking along the lake to your overnight stay in Bad Wiessee, which is located on the south side of Lake Tegernsee. Alternatively, you can use the Tegernsee boat service to shorten your route. You will find numerous options for dinner in all the towns on Lake Tegernsee.
Kreuth — Achenkirch
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 820m Höhe (-): 770m
The morning begins with a transfer to the starting point of your hike for the second stage to Kreuth-Siebenhütten. After walking a short distance on a forest path, a well-maintained hiking trail leads you through a mixed forest to the first alpine pasture region, which includes the unmanaged Gaisalm. Follow the signs in the direction of Schildenstein/Blaubergalm along a gentle ridge and finally reach the border ridge between Bavaria and Tyrol, characterized by the characteristic mountain pine vegetation. During this hike, impressive panoramas open up, ranging from the foothills of the Tegernsee Alps to the Karwendel and Zillertal Alps. After just over 3 hours of hiking, we recommend taking a break at the rustic Blaubergalm (the only refreshment stop on this entire stage) before descending into the valley on easy paths through the former Habsburg hunting grounds towards Achenwal and Achenkirch.
Achenkirch — Fügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 120m Höhe (-): 100m
Today’s stage, often described as one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Tyrol, takes you along the western shore of Lake Achensee into an enchanting landscape. Starting from your hotel in Achenkirch, you follow a well-maintained path with gentle ascents and descents, with short sections with steps and handrails for your comfort. This path leads you to the Gaisalm, the only alpine pasture in Tyrol that can only be reached on foot or by boat. A fascinating mix of landscapes awaits you along the way, including waterfalls, diverse vegetation and moraine hills that almost reach up to the Tyrolean fjord. There are also opportunities for swimming, although the Achensee, which lies at 1000 meters above sea level, rarely has a water temperature of more than 18 degrees and can therefore require some effort. The route continues via Pertisau and the lakeside path until you reach the southern end of the lake in Maurach, which also serves as the departure point for the nostalgic Achenseebahn, a steam cog railroad. From here we leave the Achensee region and continue our journey by train and bus to reach our stage destination of Fügen in the Zillertal.
Fügen — Speljoch — Hochfügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 350m Höhe (-): 740m
After your breakfast, walk from your accommodation in Fügen, which is also known as the first vacation region in the Zillertal, to the Spieljoch cable car. From there, you float effortlessly in the gondola up to the Spieljoch, which is located at an altitude of almost 1,850 meters, and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains of the Zillertal, the Karwendel and Rofan mountains, and even as far as the Kitzbühel Alps and the Kaiser Mountains. A picturesque path, lined with mountain pines, alpine roses, Swiss stone pine trees and granite stones, leads you to the Gart Alm (where we recommend the Kaiserschmarren) and then on to the Loassattel, finally reaching the Alpengasthaus Loas. After a break and a refreshment stop, you can relax on partly shady hiking trails to today’s stage destination of Hochfügen, which is known above all for its winter sports facilities.
Hochfügen — Melchboden — Aschau/Mayrhofen
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 840m Höhe (-): 300m
Today your hike takes you through a unique alpine pasture region, which can only be found here in the Alps and offers fascinating insights into historical alpine farming. You will be accompanied by rocks carved by glaciers since time immemorial until you reach the Sidanjoch. Near the Rastkogelhütte hut, an impressive panoramic view of the Inntal valley, the Karwendel mountains and the Tux Alps opens up. After a short ascent to the Mitterwandskopf, you follow a picturesque path that leads you along glacial formations and mountain ridges to the Melchboden. From here, take the regular bus service along the Zillertaler Höhenstraße into the valley, which is easy on the joints. Depending on where you are staying, you can continue your journey on the Zillertalbahn to Aschau or Mayrhofen.
Aschau/Mayrhofen — Schlegeis — Pfitschtal
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 820m
Today is a special day, as you will be crossing the main Alpine ridge, which is indeed the highlight of your crossing of the Alps. In the morning, the bus takes you to the Schlegeis reservoir at 1,800 meters above sea level, where today’s stage begins. The imposing dam wall, which was built in the early 1970s for the energy and water supply, holds back one of Austria’s largest reservoirs, which is fed by the glaciers behind it. During the moderate ascent along the well-maintained hiking trail to the Pfitscherjoch, you are accompanied by rushing streams, impressive waterfalls, scree and stone moraines and experience almost unreal landscapes. Shortly before you reach the Pfitscherjochhaus mountain hut, you cross the border into Italy and South Tyrol and reach the highest point of the day at 2,275 meters — the main Alpine ridge has been conquered! On your way through gentle alpine pastures and later through shady mixed forest, you hike down into the Pfitschtal valley. Our transfer will take you from there to your hotel in Sterzing.

Tour character

There are no climbing passages or heavily exposed sections. On the Achenkirch-Fügen stage, a head for heights is an advantage for the somewhat narrower climb along the lake. If in doubt, however, the path can also be bypassed or circumnavigated. If you are not fit or the weather is not playing ball, it is usually possible to travel to the next stage destination by public transport or cab.
