Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Arrival by 1 p.m. at the latest at the Alpenüberquerer parking lot or Gmund train station, hike to Tegernsee, Bad Wiessee or Kreuth
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 180m Höhe (-): 180m
Your Alpine crossing adventure begins on the day you arrive: after the start of the tour — we recommend starting your first stage around midday — in Gmund, your first half-day hike takes you along the Tegernsee High Trail, which runs around 100 meters above the northern shore, to the intermediate destination of Tegernsee (town). Fantastic views await you on this easy introductory stage — so have your camera or smartphone ready for the first panoramic pictures. A visit to the brewery right on the lake is also a must. After the optional short crossing with the unique rowing ferry to Rottach-Egern (unfortunately dogs are not allowed), you can walk along the lake to your overnight accommodation in Bad Wiessee on the south side or take the Tegernsee boat trip for a shortcut. There are numerous options for dinner in all the villages on Lake Tegernsee.
Day 2
Kreuth — Achenkirch
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 820m Höhe (-): 770m
In the morning, our transfer takes you to today’s starting point for the second stage of your hike to Kreuth-Siebenhütten. After a few meters of forest path, a good hiking trail leads you through mixed forest to the first alpine pasture region of the unmanaged Gaisalm. Following the signs towards Schildenstein/Blaubergalm along a gentle mountain ridge, you finally reach the border ridge between Bavaria and Tyrol with its typical mountain pine vegetation. Impressive panoramas open up from the foothills of the Tegernsee to the Karwendel and Zillertal Alps. After just over 3 hours of hiking, we recommend a refreshment stop at the rustic Blaubergalm (the only refreshment option on the entire stage) before descending into the valley on easy paths through the former Habsburg hunting grounds to Achenwald and Achenkirch.
Day 3
Achenkirch — Fügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 120m Höhe (-): 100m
Often called the most beautiful hiking trail in Tyrol, today’s stage on the western shore of Lake Achensee is enchanting. From your hotel in Achenkirch, you hike along the well-maintained trail with easy up and down sections — including short sections with steps and handrails — to the Gaisalm. The path to the only alpine pasture in Tyrol that can only be reached on foot or by boat impresses with a fascinating mix of landscapes with waterfalls, varied vegetation and moraine cones almost right above the Tyrolean fjord. Bathing opportunities are available, but the Achensee, which lies at 1000m above sea level and rarely has a water temperature of more than 18 degrees, requires some effort. Via Pertisau and then following the lakeside path, you reach the southern end of the lake in Maurach, also the departure point of the nostalgic Achenseebahn (steam cog railroad). We leave the Achensee region and continue by train and bus to the stage destination of Fügen in the Zillertal.
Day 4
Fügen — Spieljoch — Hochfügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 350m Höhe (-): 740m
After breakfast, walk from your accommodation in Fügen — also known as the first vacation region in the Zillertal — to the Spieljoch cable car. Float effortlessly by gondola up to the Spieljoch at an altitude of almost 1,850 m and enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of the mountains of the Zillertal, Karwendel and Rofan mountains and even as far as the Kitzbühel Alps and the Kaiser Mountains. A wonderful trail between mountain pines, alpine roses, Swiss stone pine trees and granite stones takes you via the Gart Alm (we recommend Kaiserschmarren) to the Loassattel and finally on to the Alpengasthaus Loas. After a rest and refreshment stop, the route takes you comfortably along a partly shady hiking trail to Hochfügen, today’s stage destination and well-known winter sports destination.
Day 5
Hochfügen — Melchboden — Zillertal
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 840m Höhe (-): 300m
Today you hike through an alpine pasture region that is only visible here in the Alps and provides fascinating insights into historical alpine pasture farming. You reach the Sidanjoch, accompanied by rocks carved by the glacier ages ago. The nearby Rastkogelhütte offers a magnificent view of the Inn Valley, Karwendel and the Tux Alps. After a short ascent to the Mitterwandskopf, you follow a picturesque path past glacial forms, pools and along a mountain ridge to the Melchboden. From here, the bus takes you down the Zillertaler Höhenstraße, which is easy on the knees. Depending on where you stay overnight, continue with the Zillertalbahn to Aschau or Mayrhofen.
Day 6
Mayrhofen/Aschau — Schlegeis — Pfitschtal
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 820m
Today is the day: you are crossing the main Alpine ridge — your de facto crossing of the Alps. In the morning, take the comfortable bus via the toll road to the Schlegeis reservoir (1,800 m above sea level) for the start of today’s stage. The imposing dam wall — built for energy and water supply at the beginning of the 1970s — keeps one of Austria’s largest reservoirs and the glaciers behind it in check. Rushing streams and impressive waterfalls, scree and stone moraines characterize the moderate ascent on the well-maintained hiking trail to the Pfitscherjoch through the almost unreal landscape. Before you reach the Pfitscherjochhaus, you cross the border to Italy and South Tyrol and reach the highest point of the day at 2,275 meters — the main Alpine ridge has been crossed. Through gentle alpine pastures and later shady mixed forest, you hike a first section down the Pfitschtal valley. Continue to your accommodation in St. Jakob.
Day 7
Pfitschtal — Sterzing
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 140m Höhe (-): 640m
The final stage on the valley floor of the Pfitsch Valley and gently downhill path — always accompanied by the Pfitsch stream — offers shady forest passages, lush meadows next to picturesque farmhouses and stone churches. Last but not least, there is a small climb at Flains, which then leads directly into the picturesque town center of Sterzing. And then you’ve made it — finisher of the Tegernsee-Sterzing Alpine Crossing. Bravo, congratulations.
Day 8
Return transfer to Tegernsee
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Organized return transfer by shuttle bus from Sterzing to Tegernsee (parking spaces, train station)

There are no climbing passages or heavily exposed sections. On the Achenkirch-Fügen stage, a head for heights is an advantage for the somewhat narrower climb along the lake. If in doubt, however, the path can also be bypassed or circumnavigated. If you are not fit or the weather is not playing ball, it is usually possible to travel to the next stage destination by public transport or cab.
