Itinerary / Stages

Arrival in Gmund, hike to Tegernsee, Bad Wiessee or Kreuth
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 180m Höhe (-): 180m
Your exciting adventure of crossing the Alps begins on the day you arrive. After the start of your tour, which we recommend beginning around lunchtime, your first half-day hike in Gmund takes you along the Tegernsee High Trail, which extends around 100 meters above the northern shore. Your intermediate destination is the town of Tegernsee. Breathtaking views await you on this easy introductory stage. So don’t forget to have your camera or smartphone ready to capture the first panoramic images. A visit to the brewery right by the lake is also an absolute must. After optionally crossing the lake with the unique rowing ferry to Rottach-Egern (unfortunately dogs are not allowed), continue your hike along the lakeshore to reach your overnight accommodation in Bad Wiessee on the south side. Alternatively, you have the option of using the Tegernsee boat service to shorten your route. You will find numerous options for dinner in all the villages around Lake Tegernsee.
Kreuth — Achenkirch
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 820m Höhe (-): 770m
The morning begins with a transfer to the starting point of your hike for the second stage to Kreuth-Siebenhütten. After just a few meters on a forest path, a solid hiking trail leads you through a mixed forest into the first alpine pasture region to the Gaisalm, which is no longer farmed. Follow the signposts towards Schildenstein and Blaubergalm, which lead you along a gentle ridge to the Bavarian-Tyrolean border ridge, where the typical mountain pine vegetation thrives. As you hike through this section, impressive panoramic views open up from the Tegernsee Alpine foothills to the Karwendel and Zillertal Alps. After just over three hours of hiking, you have the opportunity to stop for refreshments at the rustic Blaubergalm (the only refreshment stop on this stage) before descending into the valley on easy paths through the former Habsburg hunting grounds to Achenwal and Achenkirch.
Achenkirch — Fügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 120m Höhe (-): 100m
Often described as the most beautiful hiking trail in Tyrol, today’s stage on the western shore of Lake Achensee will enchant you. You start your hike from your hotel in Achenkirch and follow a well-maintained path with easy ascents and descents, with short sections equipped with steps and handrails. This path leads you to the Gaisalm, the only alpine pasture in Tyrol that can only be reached on foot or by boat. The route impresses with a fascinating landscape characterized by waterfalls, varied vegetation and moraine cones, giving you the feeling of experiencing Lake Achensee almost up close above the Tyrolean fjord. While swimming opportunities are available, you should bear in mind that Lake Achensee lies at an altitude of 1,000 meters and the water rarely reaches more than 18 degrees Celsius, which may require a certain amount of effort. After passing Pertisau and continuing along the lakeside path, you will reach the southern end of the lake in Maurach, which is also the departure point of the nostalgic Achenseebahn, a steam cogwheel train. From here, you leave the Achensee region and continue your journey by train and bus to reach your stage destination in Fügen in the Zillertal.
Fügen — Spieljoch — Hochfügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 350m Höhe (-): 740m
After breakfast, make your way from your accommodation in Fügen to the Spieljoch cable car and float effortlessly up to the Spieljoch at an altitude of almost 1,850 meters. Enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Zillertal mountains, the Karwendel mountains, the Rofan mountains and even the Kitzbühel Alps and the Kaiser mountains. A beautiful hiking trail leads you from here between mountain pines, alpine roses, Swiss stone pine trees and granite stones via the Gart Alm, where we recommend a Kaiserschmarren, to the Loassattel and finally on to the Alpengasthaus Loas. After a well-earned rest and refreshment stop, you continue your hike comfortably on partly shady paths and your stage destination, Hochfügen, now known as a winter sports resort, is within reach.
Hochfügen — Melchboden — Mayrhofen/Aschau
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 840m Höhe (-): 300m
On this day, you will cross an alpine pasture region that can only be found in this location in the Alps and offers fascinating insights into historical alpine farming. During your hike, you will be accompanied by rocks that have been polished by the glacier since time immemorial until you reach the Sidanjoch. The nearby Rastkogelhütte offers you a magnificent panoramic view of the Inntal valley, the Karwendel mountains and the Tux Alps. After a short ascent to the Mitterwandskopf, you follow a picturesque path that leads you past glacial formations and mountain lakes and along a mountain ridge to the Melchboden. From this point, we recommend taking the bus along the Zillertaler Höhenstraße down into the valley to protect your knees. Depending on where you are staying, you can continue your journey on the Zillertalbahn to Aschau or Mayrhofen.
Mayrhofen/Aschau — Schlegeis — Pfitschtal
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 820m
Today is a special day, as you will be crossing the main Alpine ridge. In the morning, you will travel comfortably by bus along the toll road to the Schlegeis reservoir at 1,800 meters above sea level, where today’s stage begins. The imposing dam wall, which was built in the early 1970s for the energy and water supply, holds one of Austria’s largest reservoirs in check, fed by the glaciers behind it. During the moderate ascent on the well-maintained hiking trail to the Pfitscherjoch, you are accompanied by rushing streams and imposing waterfalls, and the landscape is characterized by scree and moraines that seem almost unreal. You cross the border to Italy and South Tyrol before reaching the Pfitscherjochhaus mountain hut, where you reach the highest point of the day at 2,275 meters — the main Alpine ridge has been crossed. On gentle alpine pastures and later through shady mixed forest, you hike down the first section of the Pfitschtal valley. Your destination for today is St. Jakob.
Pfitschtal — Sterzing
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 140m Höhe (-): 640m
The last stage takes you along the valley floor of the Pfitsch Valley and offers gentle descents, always accompanied by the rushing Pfitsch stream. Shady forest passages, lush meadows, picturesque farmhouses and stone churches await you on this section. To round off this unforgettable journey, there is a small climb near Flains, which finally leads you directly to the picturesque center of Sterzing. And then it’s done — you have mastered the crossing of the Alps from Tegernsee to Sterzing. Congratulations, you are an Alpine Crossing finisher.

Additional information

Arrival
By TRAIN: For reasons of sustainability, we recommend traveling by train to the destination station Gmund am Tegernsee with hourly connections from Munich main station to Tegernsee. By car: From the north A8 exit Holzkirchen, from the south A8 exit Irschenberg or A12 Inntalautobahn exit Achensee/Zillertal via Achensee.
Shuttle bus Mayrhofen — Schleggeisspeicher
On the morning of day 6, our Feuer und Eis bus shuttle will take you from your hotel in Aschau or Mayrhofen to the Schlegeis reservoir. Shortly after the imposing dam wall, you then set off towards Pfitscherjoch and cross the main Alpine ridge. If, in our opinion, it is not possible to cross the route due to weather conditions (e.g. severe weather warning, onset of winter), our free bus transfer will take you from Aschau/Mayrhofen to the next stage hotel in Pfitschtal or Sterzing.
Parking facilities
Exclusive long-term parking spaces are available for customers arriving by car. Reservation at your own expense with our parking lot partner. You will receive all detailed information with your travel documents.
Return transfer
Our Alpine Crossing shuttle bus takes you comfortably from Sterzing back to Lake Tegernsee in the morning (train station, parking lot or extension hotel if necessary). Arrival at Lake Tegernsee is scheduled between 12 and 1 pm, depending on traffic. Please plan your onward journey with sufficient buffer time due to the risk of traffic jams.
Note
Please note that on the Tegernsee-Sterzing Alpine Crossing your first stage hike is already planned on the day of arrival, so plan your tour start on the day of arrival for around 12:00 noon. For a relaxed start to your Alpine crossing adventure or in the event of a long journey, we recommend booking an overnight stay at Lake Tegernsee in advance.
Tour character
The tour is moderately difficult and requires a good basic level of fitness and surefootedness. It runs along very well-maintained hiking trails, forest roads and paths. There are no climbing passages or heavily exposed sections. On the Achenkirch-Fügen stage, a head for heights is an advantage for the somewhat narrower climb along the lake. If in doubt, however, the path can also be bypassed or circumnavigated. If you are not fit or the weather is not playing ball, it is usually possible to travel to the next stage destination by public transport or cab.
Other notes
To ensure a stress-free start to the trip, we recommend arriving at the starting point by early evening in most cases. Some tours start as early as midday, in which case we recommend arriving the day before and will be happy to book an extra night for you at the same time. The individual return journey takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilometers are approximate and may differ from the actual kilometers covered. This tour is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
Minimum number of participants
If a minimum number of participants is required for the tour to take place, this is stated under Prices and services. If the minimum number of participants is not reached, we reserve the right to cancel the trip up to four weeks before the date of arrival. We recommend that you do not organize your arrival and departure until after this deadline has passed.
Insurances
Travel cancellation insurance including travel interruption insurance is recommended in any case. Information can be found at: https://www.feuer-eis-touristik.de/reiseversicherung
7‑day carefree number

For this reason, you will have a local contact person on our individual activity tours who will be happy to provide you with information and, as stated in the travel documents, can be contacted in an emergency.
