Cross-country skiing in the Engadin

Price on request

Allegra and welcome to the Upper Engadine. With over 320 days of sunshine a year, with its ice-covered three-thousand-metre peaks and bizarre rock formations, with its frozen lakes and beautiful larch forests, the Engadin is rightly considered one of the most beautiful high valleys in Switzerland. On this tour you will experience the cross-country skiing paradise of the Engadin from Maloja to Zernez. The trails take you over frozen lakes along the famous Engadin ski marathon, through secluded forests and into the high and side valleys. Wonderful sun terraces invite you to stop along the way and there is plenty of time to enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Engadin mountains.

Itinerary / Stages

Sunday: Individual arrival
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Individual arrival in Maloja. Free parking at the hotel, dinner. Depending on your arrival time, you can start skiing your first meters on the trails around Maloja.
Monday: From Maloja to the Fex Valley
Distanz: 22 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Today, classic cross-country skiers visit one of the loneliest high valleys in the Engadin. The route leads from Maloja via Isola up into the Fex Valley over slightly copied terrain. Isola is known as a small peninsula that can only be reached by boat or on foot in summer. In winter, Isola is inhabited by around six families, and a small restaurant with a wonderful sun terrace is famous far and wide for its polenta. The Fex Valley is car-free and only accessible to classic cross-country skiers. Skaters cross the lake to Sils and back via the Isola peninsula. The routes can be shortened or lengthened depending on your fitness level. Return to the hotel in the afternoon. Possibility to visit the Giovanni Segantini studio, dinner at the hotel.
Tuesday: From Maloja to Pontresina
Distanz: 21 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Today you set off on the original route of the Engadin Ski Marathon. You cross the frozen Lake Maloja flat via Sils to Surlej. Wide trails and long glides make the time fly by. In Surlej you pass the landmark of the Upper Engadine, the 17th century castle on the lake, which can be seen from afar. Stop for lunch in Surlej, as you have already covered half of the route. After lunch, the route continues along the old ski jump through the Stazerwald forest down to Pontresina. The Hotel Station in Pontresina is located directly on the cross-country ski trail and your luggage is already waiting for you. Dinner at the Bahnhöfli restaurant right next to the hotel.
Wednesday: From Pontresina to the Roseg Glacier
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
The Roseg Valley is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Upper Engadine, not least because of its spectacular view of the Roseg Glacier at the end of the valley, which seems close enough to touch. The classic trail climbs gently through sparse forests. The glacier world and the mountains up to almost 4000 meters high appear again and again in the direction of travel, the Bernina, the only four-thousand-metre peak in the Swiss Eastern Alps, towers above the valley. The Roseg mountain restaurant not only offers an impressive view, but also a fantastic dessert buffet where you can replenish lost calories. After the lunch break, you return to the valley to Pontresina on another, gently sloping trail. There are opportunities for a tour of the village or a visit to the cheese dairy. The skaters glide over the race track into Val Roseg, but do not reach the end of the valley on this trail. Instead, the skaters continue into Val Morteratsch, an equally impressive high valley up to the foot of Morteratsch. Return and dinner at the hotel.
Thursday: From Pontresina to Zuoz
Distanz: 19 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Today we continue towards the Lower Engadine along the Inn, which has its source in Maloja. From Pontresina, the trail runs flat past Samedan and Bever. Here the valley widens and you are usually driven along by a light tailwind, the famous Maloja breeze. In La Punt, a small Engadine village, you take off your skis for a few meters. You walk past the typical Engadine houses with their thick walls until you can strap your skis back on after 500 meters. After a lunch break in La Punt, the route continues slightly uphill over the golf course to Zuoz. Check in at the hotel, dinner. (Dinner in the hotel restaurant or in the Zuoz cross-country ski center, depending on availability).
Friday: From Zuoz to Zernez and back by train to Zuoz
Distanz: 25 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Today we continue towards the Lower Engadin and thus onto the last stage of this Engadin crossing. From Zuoz, the trail leads along the right side of the valley through dense pine forests. While the Inn flows far below on the left-hand side, the trail leads uphill. Three ascents and descents have to be mastered before the wide valley around Zernez opens up. A rapid descent takes you down to Zernez. Restaurants invite you to linger. The Rhaetian Railway takes you back to Zuoz where you spend the last evening of the Engadin crossing with a tasty dinner of Engadin specialties. (Dinner in the hotel restaurant or in the Zuoz cross-country ski center, depending on availability).
Individual departure
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
