Expe­ri­ence a varied Alpi­ne crossing from Lake Tegern­see to Cor­ti­na d’Ampezzo and watch the land­scape chan­ge step by step. From the gent­le peaks and green alpi­ne pas­tu­res of Bava­ria, the rou­te takes you along scenic hiking trails through the Zil­ler­tal and the main Alpi­ne ridge all the way to sun-dren­ched South Tyrol with its Ita­li­an flair. The crow­ning fina­le is Cor­ti­na d’Ampezzo, the queen of the Dolo­mi­tes, impres­si­ve­ly nest­led among the breath­ta­king, striking gray rock peaks of this UNESCO World Heri­ta­ge Site. On modera­te­ly dif­fi­cult hiking trails, new views and land­scapes await you every day. After each stage, you’ll relax in careful­ly sel­ec­ted 3- and 4‑star hotels, inns, and guest­hou­ses. Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Arri­ve by 1:00 p.m. at the latest at the Alpen­über­que­rer par­king lot or Gmund train sta­ti­on; hike to Tegern­see, Bad Wies­see, or Kreuth 
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 180m Höhe (-): 180m
Your adven­ture crossing the Alps beg­ins today, on your arri­val day: After the tour begins—we recom­mend start­ing your first stage around noon in Gmund—your first half-day hike will take you along the Tegern­see Höhen­weg, which runs about 100 meters abo­ve the north shore, to your first stop, Tegern­see (town). Stun­ning views await you on this easy intro­duc­to­ry stage, so have your came­ra or smart­phone rea­dy for your first pan­o­r­amic shots. A visit to the bre­wery right on the lake is also a must. After an optio­nal short crossing on the uni­que rowing fer­ry to Rot­tach-Egern (unfort­u­na­te­ly, dogs are not allo­wed on board), you’ll hike along the lake to your over­night stay in Bad Wies­see, loca­ted on the south side, or you can take the Tegern­see boat ser­vice for a short­cut. The­re are ple­nty of dining opti­ons in all the towns around Lake Tegern­see for dinner. 
Day 2
Kreuth — Achenkirch
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 820m Höhe (-): 770m
In the mor­ning, our trans­fer takes you to today’s start­ing point for the second stage of your hike to Kreuth-Sie­ben­hüt­ten. After a few meters of forest path, a good hiking trail leads you through mixed forest to the first alpi­ne pas­tu­re regi­on of the unma­na­ged Gaisalm. Fol­lo­wing the signs towards Schildenstein/Blaubergalm along a gent­le moun­tain ridge, you final­ly reach the bor­der ridge bet­ween Bava­ria and Tyrol with its typi­cal moun­tain pine vege­ta­ti­on. Impres­si­ve pan­ora­mas open up from the foot­hills of the Tegern­see to the Kar­wen­del and Zil­ler­tal Alps. After just over 3 hours of hiking, we recom­mend a refresh­ment stop at the rustic Blau­bergalm (the only refresh­ment opti­on on the enti­re stage) befo­re des­cen­ding into the val­ley on easy paths through the for­mer Habs­burg hun­ting grounds to Achen­wald and Achenkirch. 
Day 3
Achen­kirch — Fügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 120m Höhe (-): 100m
Often cal­led the most beau­tiful hiking trail in Tyrol, today’s stage along the wes­tern shore of Lake Achen­see will enchant you. From your hotel in Achen­kirch, you’ll hike along a well-main­tai­ned trail—featuring gent­le ascents and des­cents, inclu­ding short sec­tions with steps and handrails—to the Gaisalm. The trail to Tyrol’s only alpi­ne pas­tu­re acces­si­ble only on foot or by boat offers a fasci­na­ting mix of landscapes—including water­falls, varied vege­ta­ti­on, and morai­ne cones—all right abo­ve the Tyro­lean fjord. Swim­ming is pos­si­ble, but the Achen­see, situa­ted at 1,000 meters abo­ve sea level with a water tem­pe­ra­tu­re rare­ly excee­ding 18 degrees, requi­res a bit of effort to enjoy. Via Per­tis­au and then fol­lo­wing the lake­si­de path, you’ll reach the sou­thern end of the lake in Mau­rach, which is also the depar­tu­re point for the nost­al­gic Achen­see Rail­way (steam cog rail­way). We lea­ve the Achen­see regi­on and con­ti­nue by train and bus to today’s desti­na­ti­on, Fügen in the Zillertal. 
Day 4
Fügen — Spiel­joch — Hochfügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 350m Höhe (-): 740m
After break­fast, walk from your accom­mo­da­ti­on in Fügen, also known as the first vaca­ti­on regi­on in the Zil­ler­tal, to the Spiel­joch cable car. The gon­do­la takes you effort­less­ly up to the Spiel­joch at an alti­tu­de of almost 1,850 m and you can enjoy a fan­ta­stic pan­o­r­amic view of the moun­ta­ins of the Zil­ler­tal, Kar­wen­del and Rofan moun­ta­ins and even as far as the Kitz­bü­hel Alps and the Kai­ser Moun­ta­ins. A won­derful trail bet­ween moun­tain pines, alpi­ne roses, Swiss stone pine trees and gra­ni­te stones takes you via the Gart Alm (we recom­mend Kai­ser­schmar­ren) to the Loas­sat­tel and final­ly on to the Alpen­gast­haus Loas. After a rest and refresh­ment stop, the rou­te takes you com­for­ta­b­ly along a part­ly shady hiking trail to Hoch­fü­gen, today’s stage desti­na­ti­on and well-known win­ter sports destination. 
Day 5
Hoch­fü­gen – Melch­bo­den – Zillertal 
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 840m Höhe (-): 300m
Today you hike through an alpi­ne pas­tu­re regi­on that is only visi­ble here in the Alps and pro­vi­des fasci­na­ting insights into his­to­ri­cal alpi­ne pas­tu­re far­ming. You reach the Sidan­joch, accom­pa­nied by rocks car­ved by the gla­cier ages ago. The near­by Rast­ko­gel­hüt­te offers a magni­fi­cent view of the Inn Val­ley, Kar­wen­del and the Tux Alps. After a short ascent to the Mit­ter­wands­kopf, you fol­low a pic­tures­que path past gla­cial forms, pools and along a moun­tain ridge to the Melch­bo­den. From here, the bus takes you down the Zil­ler­ta­ler Höhen­stra­ße, which is easy on the kne­es. Depen­ding on whe­re you stay over­night, con­ti­nue with the Zil­ler­tal­bahn to Aschau or Mayrhofen. 
Day 6
Mayrhofen/Aschau — Schle­geis — Pfitschtal
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 820m
Today is the day: You’ll be crossing the main Alpi­ne ridge—essentially your Alpi­ne crossing—today. In the mor­ning, you’ll take a com­for­ta­ble bus ride along the toll road to the Schle­geis Reser­voir (1,800 m abo­ve sea level), the start­ing point for today’s stage. The impo­sing dam—built in the ear­ly 1970s to pro­vi­de ener­gy and water—holds in check one of Austria’s lar­gest reser­voirs, fed by the gla­ciers behind it. Rus­hing streams and impres­si­ve water­falls, along with scree and rock morai­nes, cha­rac­te­ri­ze the mode­ra­te ascent along the well-main­tai­ned hiking trail to the Pfit­scher­joch through the almost sur­re­al land­scape. Befo­re rea­ching the Pfit­scher­joch­haus, a moun­tain hut with food and drink ser­vice, you’ll cross the bor­der into Ita­ly (South Tyrol) and reach the day’s hig­hest point at 2,275 meters—the main Alpi­ne ridge is now behind you. You’ll hike the first sec­tion of the Pfitsch­tal val­ley downhill through gent­le alpi­ne mea­dows and later through a shady mixed forest. Con­ti­nue on to your lodging in St. Jakob. 
Day 7
Pfitsch­tal — Sterzing 
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 140m Höhe (-): 640m
Today’s stage, which fol­lows a gent­ly des­cen­ding path along the val­ley flo­or of the Pfitsch Valley—always accom­pa­nied by the Pfit­scher Bach—features shady forest sec­tions, lush mea­dows, and pic­tures­que farm­hou­ses and stone churches. Final­ly, to wrap things up, there’s a short climb to tack­le near Flains, which then leads direct­ly into the pic­tures­que town cen­ter of Sterzing. 
Day 8
Ster­zing — Mühl­bach — Bru­neck / Reischach 
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 470m Höhe (-): 1140m
A trans­fer takes you to Mühl­bach in the mor­ning, from whe­re a short public bus ride takes you to Roden­eck Alm, the start­ing point of the stage. You hike across the sun­ny high pla­teau of the Lüs­ner-Roden­ecker Alm. Enjoy the magni­fi­cent view of the wide Bri­xen basin, the Eisack Val­ley and the Dolo­mi­tes. The hike takes you past seve­ral small moun­tain lakes up to the Ast­joch with a 360° pan­o­r­amic view. Seve­ral refresh­ment stops along the way invi­te you to lin­ger and enjoy. From the Ast­joch it’s downhill, and tho­se who wish can make a short detour to the Elle­ner Kreuz. The rou­te con­ti­nues via the Wal­der Alm, a small, rustic moun­tain pas­tu­re with a won­derful view down to Mon­tal. Over­night stay in Bru­neck / Reischach. 
Day 9
Bru­neck / Rei­schach — Kron­platz — Prags­er Wild­see — Prags 
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 670m Höhe (-): 1400m
In the mor­ning, you’ll take the cable car (ticket included) up to Kron­platz, a well-known desti­na­ti­on for ski­ing and hiking. The des­cent takes you over the Fur­kel Pass into the Fanes-Sen­nes-Prags Natu­re Park, one of South Tyrol’s lar­gest pro­tec­ted are­as. From the Foje­döra high alpi­ne pas­tu­re, you’ll hike in the shadow of the impo­sing See­ko­fel mas­sif to Lake Prags­er Wild­see, the “Pearl of the Dolo­mi­te Lakes.” Expe­ri­en­ced hikers have the opti­on to extend this stage via the Hochalpensee.
Day 10
Brai­es — Pra­to Piaz­za — Hell­tal — Höhen­stein Val­ley — Cortina 
Distanz: 19 km Höhe (+): 940m Höhe (-): 850m
Along­side the Hohe Gaisl and the Kreuz­ko­fel group, the Plät­z­wie­se is one of the most popu­lar hiking are­as in the coun­try. This regi­on is par­ti­cu­lar­ly attrac­ti­ve to visi­tors due to its extra­or­di­na­ry flo­ra and wild lakes. Start­ing from Pra­to Piaz­za, you reach the Hell­tal val­ley via the Stru­del­kopf. This stage offers you a uni­que view of the Hohe Gaisl, the Three Peaks, the Tofa­na and Mon­te Cristallo. 
Day 11

If the mini­mum num­ber of par­ti­ci­pan­ts is not rea­ched, we reser­ve the right to can­cel the trip up to four weeks befo­re the date of arri­val. We recom­mend that you do not orga­ni­ze your arri­val and depar­tu­re until after this dead­line has passed.
Other notes
To ensu­re a stress-free start to the trip, we recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening in most cases. Some tours start as ear­ly as mid­day, in which case we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re and will be hap­py to book an extra night for you at the same time. The indi­vi­du­al return jour­ney takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilo­me­ters are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al kilo­me­ters cover­ed. This tour is not sui­ta­ble for peo­p­le with redu­ced mobility. 
Tour cha­rac­ter
The tour is modera­te­ly dif­fi­cult and requi­res a good level of fit­ness and sure­foo­ted­ness. It runs along very well-main­tai­ned hiking trails, forest roads and paths. The­re are no clim­bing pas­sa­ges or very expo­sed sec­tions. On the Achen­kirch-Fügen stage, a head for heights is an advan­ta­ge for the some­what nar­rower climb along the lake. Howe­ver, if in doubt, the climb can also be avo­ided or bypas­sed. If you are not fit or the wea­ther is not play­ing ball, it is usual­ly pos­si­ble to tra­vel to the next stage loca­ti­on by public trans­port or cab. 
Note on Lug­ga­ge Trans­fer on the Day of Arrival 
Plea­se note that for the Tegern­see-Ster­zing Alpi­ne Crossing, your first stage of the hike is sche­du­led for your arri­val day. The­r­e­fo­re, plea­se plan to start your tour around 12:00 p.m. on your arri­val day. You can drop off your lug­ga­ge on site by 1:00 p.m. at the latest at the Gmund train sta­ti­on and at the long-term par­king lot. For a rela­xed start to your Alpi­ne crossing adventure—or if you’re tra­ve­ling from far away—we recom­mend boo­king a night’s stay at Tegern­see beforehand. 
Par­king
For guests arri­ving by car, our exclu­si­ve long-term par­king lot is available. Reser­va­tions must be made at your own expen­se through our par­king partner—you’ll recei­ve all the details with your tra­vel docu­ments. To ensu­re you can start your first leg of the trip right away on the day of arri­val, you can drop off your che­cked lug­ga­ge by 1:00 p.m. at the latest direct­ly at the Feu­er und Eis lug­ga­ge con­tai­ner in the par­king lot—we’ll trans­port your suit­ca­se to your first hotel on Lake Tegernsee. 
Shut­tle Bus Mayr­ho­fen — Schleggeisspeicher 
On the mor­ning of the 6th day, our “Feu­er und Eis” shut­tle bus will take you from your hotel in Aschau or Mayr­ho­fen to the Schle­geis Reser­voir. Short­ly after pas­sing the impo­sing dam, you’ll set off toward the Pfit­scher­joch and “cross” the main Alpi­ne ridge. If, in our assess­ment, the crossing is not pos­si­ble due to wea­ther con­di­ti­ons (e.g., seve­re wea­ther war­nings, sud­den onset of win­ter), our free bus trans­fer will take you from Aschau/Mayrhofen to the next stage hotel in the Pfitsch­tal or Sterzing.
Arri­val
BY TRAIN: For sus­taina­bi­li­ty reasons, we recom­mend tra­ve­ling by train to the Gmund am Tegern­see sta­ti­on (plea­se drop off your lug­ga­ge the­re by 1:00 p.m. at the latest, unless you have boo­ked an addi­tio­nal night)—there are hour­ly con­nec­tions from Munich Cen­tral Sta­ti­on to Lake Tegern­see. If you’ve boo­ked an extra night, con­ti­nue from Gmund Sta­ti­on with your lug­ga­ge on foot or by bus to your hotel. By Car: From the north, take the A8 and exit at Holz­kir­chen; from the south, take the A8 and exit at Irschen­berg, or take the A12 Inn­tal­au­to­bahn and exit at Achensee/Zillertal via Achensee.
