Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Arrival by 1 p.m. at the latest at the Alpenüberquerer parking lot or Gmund train station, hike to Tegernsee, Bad Wiessee or Kreuth
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 180m Höhe (-): 180m
The best time to start the first stage of your crossing of the Alps is around midday. Your hike begins in Gmund on the Tegernsee High Trail, which runs around 100 meters above the northern shore. Enjoy fantastic views of Lake Tegernsee as you hike leisurely towards Tegernsee (town). Have your camera ready to capture the first panoramic shots. In Tegernsee, it’s worth stopping off at the traditional brewery right on the lakeshore. Afterwards, you have the option of taking the historic rowing ferry to Rottach-Egern. Alternatively, you can follow the lakeside path and continue your leisurely hike to Bad Wiessee, where you will spend the night today, or take a boat trip as a shortcut. At the end of the day, numerous restaurants in the towns around Lake Tegernsee invite you to enjoy a refreshment stop. This is a relaxing way to round off your first day of hiking before continuing into the mountains the next day.
Day 2
Kreuth — Achenkirch
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 820m Höhe (-): 770m
In the morning, a transfer takes you to the starting point of today’s hike in Kreuth-Siebenhütten. After a short section on a forest path, an easily accessible hiking trail leads through dense mixed forest to the first alpine region of the unmanaged Gaisalm. Along a gentle mountain ridge, follow the signs towards Schildenstein and Blaubergalm. The landscape gradually opens up and you reach the border ridge between Bavaria and Tyrol, characterized by typical mountain pine vegetation. Impressive panoramic views from the Tegernsee Alpine foothills to the peaks of the Karwendel and Zillertal Alps await you here. After around three hours of hiking, you can take a well-earned break at the Blaubergalm, the only refreshment stop on this stage. The descent into the valley then begins. You hike along easy paths through the former hunting grounds of the Habsburgs before reaching your destination for today, Achenwald or Achenkirch.
Day 3
Achenkirch — Fügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 120m Höhe (-): 100m
This stage is considered one of the most beautiful hiking routes in Tyrol and takes you along a well-maintained path along the western shore of Lake Achensee. Steps and handrails make the path easier in some places. After a varied hike, you will reach the Gaisalm, the only alpine pasture in Tyrol that can only be reached on foot or by boat. The route impresses with an impressive natural mix of waterfalls, diverse vegetation and moraine cones that rise almost directly above the deep blue lake. There are swimming opportunities along the way, but a dip in the Achensee at 1,000 meters above sea level requires some effort, as the water temperature rarely rises above 18 degrees. From the Gaisalm, the route continues to Pertisau and then along the lakeside path to the southern end of the lake in Maurach. This is also the departure point of the historic Achenseebahn, a nostalgic steam cogwheel train. You leave the Achensee region and continue by train and bus to Fügen in the Zillertal, today’s stage destination.
Day 4
Fügen — Spieljoch — Hochfügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 350m Höhe (-): 740m
After a relaxed breakfast, start your day with a walk to the Spieljochbahn cable car. The gondola takes you effortlessly up to an altitude of 1,850 meters, where a breathtaking panoramic view awaits you. From here, the view sweeps over the peaks of the Zillertal, Karwendel and Rofan mountains and, on clear days, even as far as the Kitzbühel Alps and the Kaiser Mountains. An idyllic trail leads through mountain pines, blooming alpine roses, Swiss stone pine trees and striking granite formations. Via the Gart Alm, which is famous for its delicious Kaiserschmarrn pancakes, you reach the Loassattel and finally the rustic Alpengasthaus Loas, where you can enjoy a cozy break. The route then takes you downhill along a partly shady path until you reach today’s destination: Hochfügen, a well-known winter sports resort.
Day 5
Hochfügen — Melchboden — Mayrhofen/Aschau
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 840m Höhe (-): 300m
Today you will immerse yourself in a unique Alpine pasture region that can only be found in this form here in the Alps. The landscape provides fascinating insights into the traditional alpine farming of times gone by. Accompanied by ancient rocks carved by the glacier, you reach the Sidanjoch, an idyllic crossing in the middle of the Tyrolean mountains. Not far away, the Rastkogelhütte invites you to take a well-earned break. From here you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view over the Inn Valley, Karwendel and the Tux Alps. After a short but rewarding ascent to the Mitterwandskopf, you follow a picturesque trail. The trail takes you past glacial formations, small pools and along a mountain ridge with great views to Melchboden. From there, you take a relaxed bus ride down to the valley via the Zillertaler Höhenstraße, which is known for its magnificent views. Depending on where you spend the night, you then continue by Zillertalbahn to Aschau or Mayrhofen, where you can end the day in comfort.
Day 6
Mayrhofen/Aschau — Schleigeis — Pfitschtal — Sterzing
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 820m
Today you cross the main Alpine ridge, a milestone on your tour. Our transfer takes you to the Schlegeis reservoir (1,800 m), where your stage begins. The mighty dam wall, surrounded by glaciers, holds back one of Austria’s largest reservoirs. You ascend moderately to the Pfitscherjoch (2,275 m) on a well-maintained hiking trail. Streams, waterfalls and moraines characterize the almost surreal landscape. At the Pfitscherjochhaus you cross the border into South Tyrol. The descent leads through alpine meadows and shady mixed forest into the Pfitschtal valley. Finally you reach St. Jakob in the Pfitschtal valley. From there, take the bus to Sterzing.
Day 7
Vipiteno — Bressanone — Chiusa
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 580m Höhe (-): 620m
In the morning, there is a transfer from Sterzing to the starting point of the stage. Starting from Brixen, the hike leads up the Pfeffersberg. You pass small hamlets and mountain farms on beautiful terraces. The panoramic view of the mighty Dolomite peaks opens up to the south. Following the Keschtnweg trail, you hike through a beautiful, root-covered forest path and then reach Feldthurns. Via Säben Monastery, the acropolis of South Tyrol, the route leads to the Dürer town of Klausen.
Day 8
Chiusa — Renon — Bolzano
Distanz: 18 km Höhe (+): 670m Höhe (-): 280m
After a short bus transfer to Barbiano, the stage follows the Keschtnweg trail up the Ritten. The panorama is simply stunning. The hike leads across the Ritten high plateau above the Eisack valley with stunning views of the Dolomites, especially the Schlern. The earth pyramids on the Ritten are the highest and most beautiful of their kind in Europe. From Oberbozen you can take the cable car to Bolzano. Nowhere else do Italian and German culture meet as closely as here.
Day 9
Bolzano — Lana — Merano
Distanz: 19 km Höhe (+): 220m Höhe (-): 240m
After a transfer by public transport, the stage begins in Lana. The hike leads along the famous Marlinger Waalweg. Waale are irrigation ditches that were created several hundred years ago to supply dry corridors with water. The Marlinger Waalweg offers a magnificent view of the Merano basin and, at 11 km, is the longest of its kind in South Tyrol. Below Tyrol Castle, the stage follows the famous Tappeiner Weg to Merano. Centuries-old arcades and beautiful parks invite you to enjoy a pleasant end to the tour in a mild climate.
