Crossing the Alps in Switzerland — Gotthard Pass and Strada Alta

from 1.356,- per person

The heart of the Alps beats at the Gotthard Pass. Countless rivers and springs originate on this high plateau, through which one of Europe’s most important trade routes has run for centuries. The hike begins in the Urseren Valley and leads through the wild and romantic Schöllenen Gorge. The path leads steeply up to the Gotthard Pass, where the mountain flowers still bloom even in summer. The Strada Alta, one of Switzerland’s most famous high-altitude trails, then awaits you. The landscape changes and Mediterranean flair slowly takes the place of the cool mountain air.

Itinerary / Stages

Journey to Amsteg
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Amsteg Andermatt
Distanz: 10 km Höhe (+): 610m Höhe (-): 84m
Today starts with a bus ride from Amsteg to Wassen. A stage for train freaks: the route runs in part directly alongside the tracks of the now old Gotthard railroad line (the long-distance trains speed through the world’s longest railroad tunnel under the Gotthard mountains).
Andermatt Gotthard Pass
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 663m Höhe (-): 10m
The towns of Göschenen and Andermatt play an important role in the history of Gotthard traffic. In between is the legendary Schöllenen Gorge. The route follows the paving of the venerable mule track to the Pass of Passes. Diverse, colorful alpine flora. The striking ventilation system of the Gotthard car tunnel resembles a bandstand.
Gotthard Pass — Airolo
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 945m
The path meanders alongside the famous Tremola road far down to Airolo. The artfully constructed hairpin bends have been immortalized in countless films. On the way, spectacular views of the Leventina with the long ascents and descents of the highway.
Airolo — Osco
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 755m Höhe (-): 765m
Deep down in the valley, traffic is roaring on the highway, while up on the Strada alta there is peace and quiet. Magnificent views of the mountain ranges of the Leventina and Val Bedretto. Bright chapels shine in villages and valleys.
Osco — Anzonico
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 525m Höhe (-): 705m
The middle section of the Strada alta is considered the most pleasant and attractive: hardly any differences in altitude, mostly on a natural surface with the peaks of the Leventina on the right as a constant companion. Chapels and churches provide contemplation and artistic enjoyment.
Anzonico — Biasca
Distanz: 18 km Höhe (+): 345m Höhe (-): 1050m
The most romantic but steepest section of the Strada alta. The old mule track leads over huge rocky pulpits and through a single chestnut forest to the unique open-air staircase above Pollegio. Recommended journey from Poleggio to Biasca by public bus.
