Crossing the Alps in Switzerland: north-south route from Basel to Lugano

from 1.643,- per person

The north-south route connects two of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland. From the border triangle in Basel, this tour first leads over the Jura mountains to Lucerne. It continues through central Switzerland and over the Gotthard Pass. You then cycle past the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the three castles of Bellinzona and up to Monte Ceneri with a view of Lake Maggiore. Lago di Lugano sparkles seductively in the sun in front of you, palm trees line the route and a touch of Italianita sets in: you have reached the southernmost corner of Switzerland and are rolling comfortably towards the border with Italy

Basel, Liestal and the Ergolz Valley: a busy, self-confident conurbation. As a contrast: tranquillity and lovely landscapes in the Baselbieter Jura. Continue through the hills of the Aargau Jura Park followed by a rushing descent over the southern Jura to Aarau.
Aarau — Lucerne
Distanz: 57 km Höhe (+): 275m Höhe (-): 230m
From Aarau, the trail leads into the idyllic Suhrental river valley. The Alps can be seen to the south and the Jura train to the north. The trail leads through rich orchards and along fertile fields to Lake Sempach and finally to Lucerne.
Lucerne — Amsteg
Distanz: 42 km Höhe (+): 400m Höhe (-): 280m
Lake Lucerne is one of the largest and most beautiful lakes in Switzerland. With its many arms, it connects the Central Plateau and the Alps. To avoid the Axenstrasse, take the boat from Beckenried to Flüelen. The tour through the Reuss plain to Amsteg is flat and easy to manage
Amsteg — Gotthard Pass
Distanz: 35 km Höhe (+): 1575m Höhe (-): 5m
Continue through the Uri region, where the wild Reuss rattles down the Schöllenen Gorge, tamed only by steep mountain flanks and the Devil’s Bridge. Bus ride from Göschenen to Andermatt and up to the Gotthard Pass, an Alpine transit route of European importance. Whether on horseback, by train, car or bike: everything wanted and still wants to cross the Gotthard to the south.
Gotthard Pass — Bellinzona
Distanz: 77 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 1855m
The Leventina has been a transit corridor since time immemorial. The further south you go, the milder the climate becomes.
