The third sec­tion of the famous Maxi­mi­li­an Trail takes you from idyl­lic Tegern­see to pic­tures­que Königs­see in Berch­tes­ga­de­ner Land. In 10 days, you will expe­ri­ence the impres­si­ve diver­si­ty of the Bava­ri­an Alpi­ne land­scape, fol­lo­wing in the foot­s­teps of King Maxi­mi­li­an II. Look for­ward to a balan­ced mix of acti­vi­ty and enjoy­ment: your rou­te takes you through gent­le val­leys and ori­gi­nal vil­la­ges, over rol­ling hills and to spec­ta­cu­lar peaks such as the Wen­del­stein, Hoch­gern and Hoch­felln. Along the way, you will enjoy warm Bava­ri­an hos­pi­ta­li­ty in cozy moun­tain huts and inns. Every day of hiking gives you new views and dis­co­veries as you lea­ve ever­y­day life behind you step by step and immer­se yours­elf in the tran­quil­li­ty of natu­re. Over­night stays are in com­for­ta­ble hotels, guest­hou­ses and inns in the val­leys. So that you can enjoy the hike wit­hout any worries, we take care of lug­ga­ge trans­por­ta­ti­on from one accom­mo­da­ti­on to the next.

Der Ausblick vom Hochfelln über das Chiemgau zeigt eine atemberaubende Szenerie mit weiten Tälern und glitzernden Seen, die sich bis zum Horizont erstrecken. Im Vordergrund thront ein markanter Felsen mit einem Kreuz, welcher die Kulisse perfekt ergänzt.

Day 1
Indi­vi­du­al arri­val at the Tegernsee
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Wel­co­me to Lake Tegern­see! Enjoy the day by the spar­k­ling water, sur­roun­ded by the pic­tures­que mountains. 
Day 2
Bad Wies­see — Schliersee
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 550m Höhe (-): 520m
Climb up to the Berg­gast­hof Neu­reuth on scenic paths. From the­re you can enjoy a magni­fi­cent view over the Tegern­see val­ley. The rou­te then con­ti­nues to the Gin­del­al­men. Now you have a beau­tiful view of the other side towards Munich and Schlier­see. Enjoy a rela­xed hike downhill to Schliersee. 
Day 3
Schlier­see — Bran­nen­burg / Fragrance
Distanz: 21 km Höhe (+): 1100m Höhe (-): 1340m
Take the train to Fisch­bach­au in the mor­ning. You then hike past the famous pil­grimage site of Bir­ken­stein. You then climb up to the Kes­sel­alm, con­ti­nue below the Brei­ten­stein and final­ly reach the high­light of the day — the lite­ral­ly towe­ring Wen­del­stein. Here, the pan­o­r­amic restau­rant invi­tes you to take a break and visit the Wen­del­stein Cave. Depen­ding on your mood and moti­va­ti­on, you can des­cend into the val­ley to Bran­nen­burg on foot or take the cog rail­road. If you are stay­ing over­night in Duft today, you will be picked up at the val­ley sta­ti­on by our trans­fer and taken to your over­night accommodation. 
Day 4
Bran­nen­burg / Fra­grance — Aschau im Chiemgau
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 780m Höhe (-): 970m
If you have spent the night in Bran­nen­burg, a trans­fer will take you to the start­ing point of the hike in Duft. From here, you con­ti­nue to ascend — part­ly via ela­bo­ra­te steps — until you reach the Hoch­ries sum­mit and enjoy the breath­ta­king view over the Chiem­gau regi­on. The Hoch­ries­hüt­te invi­tes you to stop for refresh­ments. The trail then leads plea­sant­ly downhill to Aschau im Chiem­gau with some beau­tiful views of Lake Chiemsee. 
Day 5
Aschau im Chiem­gau — Marquartstein
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 1060m Höhe (-): 1120m
From Aschau, the rou­te leads uphill again, past the Stein­lin­g­alm and with fan­ta­stic views of Lake Chiem­see below the Kam­pen­wand to the sadd­le bet­ween the Haber­spitz and Hoch­plat­te. Allow an extra hour for an optio­nal detour to the Hoch­plat­te. Take the easy path down into the val­ley to Marquartstein. 
Day 6
Mar­quart­stein — Hoch­felln — Bergen
Distanz: 18 km Höhe (+): 1710m Höhe (-): 620m
Today you climb up to the Hoch­gern­haus and then to the gras­sy sum­mit of the Hoch­gern on part­ly secluded paths sur­roun­ded by magni­fi­cent natu­re. A very rewar­ding vari­ant via Schnap­pen­kir­che with won­derful views of Lake Chiem­see and lar­ge are­as of felt. At the sum­mit, it is worth taking a short break and let­ting your gaze wan­der into the distance. The rou­te des­cends the steep sou­thern slo­pe in short hair­pin bends and you will pass the Bischofs­fell­nalm a litt­le later. You des­cend for a while befo­re the ascent to the Hoch­felln, which is also rewar­ding with its fan­ta­stic views. The­re is even a bota­ni­cal cir­cu­lar trail in the sum­mit area. Final­ly, you take the gon­do­la (ticket not included) down into the val­ley to Bergen. 
Day 7
Ber­gen — Hoch­felln — Ruh­pol­ding — Inzell
Distanz: 19 km Höhe (+): 190m Höhe (-): 1080m
In the mor­ning, take the cable car back up to the Hoch­felln (free with a guest card). From here you hike to the Fell­nalm, which lies in a hol­low. Then fol­low a forest road down to the inter­na­tio­nal­ly renow­ned biath­lon town of Ruh­pol­ding. From here you can enjoy a very rela­xed hike on flat ter­rain, part­ly along a stream on various long-distance cycle paths to Schmelz or Inzell. 
Day 8
Inzell — Bad Reichenhall
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 850m Höhe (-): 1120m
Flat at the begin­ning, then much more chal­len­ging uphill to the Koh­leralm. With no gre­at dif­fe­ren­ces in alti­tu­de, you now fol­low the roo­ty path with won­derful views of the Rei­chen­hall val­ley to the Zwie­sel­haus. From the­re you can enjoy a breath­ta­king view, inclu­ding of the Zwie­sel. You hike through woo­ded ter­rain to the List­see lake and then on tar­red paths to Bad Rei­chen­hall, a well-known spa town that is all about salt. A visit to the old salt works or the ther­mal baths is high­ly recommended. 
Day 9
Bad Rei­chen­hall — Königs­see / Berchtesgaden
Distanz: 21 km Höhe (+): 390m Höhe (-): 280m
Your last stage takes you past Hall­thurm, a for­mer salt warehouse, and a litt­le later along a pan­o­r­amic wal­king trail and the Mozart Cycle Path, always clo­se to the val­ley, to Berch­tes­ga­den. On your rou­te, you can admi­re fasci­na­ting natu­ral spec­ta­cles such as the rock for­ma­ti­on of the Stone Agnes or, on the other side, the Unters­berg. With a bit of luck, you might even see the Watz­mann. After che­cking into your hotel in Berch­tes­ga­den, it’s worth taking the bus to the Königs­see, for exam­p­le. The view of the lake framed by moun­ta­ins is sim­ply magical. 
Day 10

Unfort­u­na­te­ly, your expe­ri­ence in the Bava­ri­an Alps is alre­a­dy coming to an end. Per­haps you still have time and would like to extend your stay and dis­co­ver the famous St. Bar­tho­lo­mä cha­pel, for example.

Arri­val
By car: Coming from the north on the A8 to Holz­kir­chen and then on the B318 to the Tegern­see val­ley. From the south via the Achen­see and the B181, later the B307 to Tegernsee.by pla­ne: The nea­rest inter­na­tio­nal air­ports are: Munich (approx. 85 km), Salz­burg (approx. 115 km), Inns­bruck (approx. 90 km). We will be hap­py to orga­ni­ze your trans­fer from the air­port to your accom­mo­da­ti­on. By train: To Munich and onward jour­ney with the BRB to Gmund or Tegern­see, bus or cab to the hotel.

No mat­ter how well plan­ned a trip is, in rare cases unex­pec­ted things hap­pen. At such times, it’s nice to have someone you can rely on on site. For this reason, you will have a local cont­act per­son on our indi­vi­du­al acti­vi­ty tours who will be hap­py to pro­vi­de you with infor­ma­ti­on and, as sta­ted in the tra­vel docu­ments, can be cont­ac­ted in an emergency.

If the mini­mum num­ber of par­ti­ci­pan­ts is not rea­ched, we reser­ve the right to can­cel the trip up to four weeks befo­re the date of arri­val. We recom­mend that you do not orga­ni­ze your arri­val and depar­tu­re until after this dead­line has passed.
Other notes
To ensu­re a stress-free start to the trip, we recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening in most cases. Some tours start as ear­ly as mid­day, in which case we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re and will be hap­py to book an extra night for you at the same time. The indi­vi­du­al return jour­ney takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilo­me­ters are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al kilo­me­ters cover­ed. This tour is not sui­ta­ble for peo­p­le with redu­ced mobility. 
Tour cha­rac­ter
The hike on the Maxi­mi­li­an Trail com­pri­ses quite long hiking stages. With up to 21 km and an avera­ge ascent of around 1000 m in places, you should bring moun­tain expe­ri­ence, sure­foo­ted­ness and a head for heights. A good level of fit­ness is a pre­re­qui­si­te for the long stages with wal­king times of up to 8 hours. Indi­vi­du­al stages or sec­tions can be bypas­sed by public transport.
