Dachstein circular hiking trail

from 1.049,- per person

At 2,995 meters, the main peak of the Dachstein mountain range is one of the highest elevations in the Northern Alps. The Dachstein has had a major influence on the formation of the Salzkammergut. The majority of the Salzkammergut lakes are former glacial lakes of the Dachstein glacier. The tourist success story of mountaineering in this region began with the first ascent of the Hoher Dachstein on July 18, 1834. A little later, Friedrich Simony built the world’s first via ferrata here. The cable car was built in the middle of the last century. The tour described here also uses the cable car as an ascent aid. This tour harmoniously combines scenic highlights and differences in altitude. Look forward to a delightful hiking tour through diverse landscapes and an encounter with a true mountain personality.

Itinerary / Stages

Individual arrival in Gosau am Dachstein
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
The Gosau Valley is one of the most magnificent mountain regions in the Northern Alps and comes to a brilliant end with the two Gosau lakes at the head of the valley. In 1997, this impressive region on the Dachstein was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will receive your detailed travel documents at your accommodation in Gosau.
On the Bible Trail
Distanz: 10 km Höhe (+): 850m Höhe (-): 860m
The Gosaukammbahn cable car takes you up to an altitude of 1,475 meters in a short time to the Zwieselalm, where a panoramic trail begins. After a few hundred meters you reach the so-called Bibelsteig, which leads below the Gosaukamm and across idyllic alpine pastures. During the Counter-Reformation, precious Bible prints were smuggled along this path, hence the name Bibelsteig. Across the alpine pastures of the Stuhlalm with its wonderful panorama and through the Durchgangsscharte, the trail makes a wide arc around the most famous peak of the Gosaukamm, the Bischofsmütze. The day’s destination is the stately Hofpürglhütte, situated on a panoramic terrace. (1 night) (Luggage transport from Gosau to Ramsau, where you will spend the night the following day. You must bring your own luggage and sleeping bag for the overnight stay at the Hofpürglhütte).
Below the steep faces of the Hohe Dachstein
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 895m Höhe (-): 882m
Lovers of bizarre limestone formations will get their money’s worth today. First you follow the Salzburger Almenweg to the so-called Rinderfeld, a pasture area covered in limestone blocks and landslide material. A crystal-clear mountain stream winds its way through, inviting you to linger. Continue past huge rocks and climb up to the gate, the highest point of today’s stage. Here you also cross the border between Salzburg and Styria. The trail runs directly below the steep faces of the Torstein, Mitterspitz and Hoher Dachstein. You reach the Dachstein Südwandhütte, which — like an eagle’s nest — lies beneath the steep south faces of the impressive Dachstein massif. Finally, descend to the Türlwand and the mountaineering village of Ramsau, situated on a high plateau.
To the highest alpine club hut in Styria
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 1044m Höhe (-): 69m
The Guttenberghaus, the day’s hiking destination, is located at 2,147 meters. The hut has already celebrated its 100th birthday and has fortunately retained its rustic character. Situated on a meadow hill, you can enjoy an impressive view of Ramsau and the Enns Valley lying at your feet, as well as the Niedere and Hohe Tauern mountains opposite. (Luggage transport from Ramsau to Gröbming, where you will spend the night the following day. You must bring your own luggage and sleeping bag for the night at the Guttenberghaus; 1 night) Variant 1 hike (also recommended in bad weather) directly from the hotel in Ramsau with a view of the imposing Dachstein massif. The ascent via the Anton-Baum-Weg to the Guttenberghaus leads through a sparse forest at the beginning and later crosses a watercourse in front of the Lärchboden. The path continues uphill in hairpin bends, becoming narrower and the surrounding vegetation lower. Ramsau comes into view again before you reach the Alpenvereinshütte. Hike: approx. 4–5 hours (6.5 km, ascent 1044 m / descent 69 m) Variant 2 Ascent with the Dachstein cable car (costs to be paid separately on site) to the mountain station at 2,687 meters. Via the Schladming glacier, the hike follows a wide arc over the rugged landscape of the Dachstein massif and the Feisterscharte to the Guttenberghaus. Hike: approx. 4–5 hours (9.5 km, ascent 264 m / descent: 861 m) Please note: For option 2 with the Dachstein cable car, it is essential to reserve the ascent at www.derdachstein.at approx. one week in advance, as space is limited. Each guest is responsible for making their own reservation.
High alpine hike and lovely alpine pasture area
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 552m Höhe (-): 860m
You leave the Guttenberghaus via the northern slope of the Sinabell past rocks, mountain pines and gorges over the Am Stein plateau. A barren rocky landscape dominates the first part of today’s stage. Finally, you descend again to meadows and forests. You can now take a break at the Grafenbergalm to take in the lovely surroundings. The hike ends at a small collection of huts and an inn at the foot of the Stoderzinken, one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the north of Styria.
On forest paths and alpine trails to prehistoric rock carvings
Distanz: 22 km Höhe (+): 627m Höhe (-): 1590m
From the Stoderzinken, the trail leads through a beautiful larch forest and past Swiss stone pines to an ancient mule and smuggler’s path. This winds its way through a 30-metre-high gorge, where you will find ancient rock carvings that are protected by UNESCO. You should not miss out on a cozy stop at the Viehbergalm mountain hut. From the Hochmühleck, from where there is a beautiful view of the lonely Kemetgebirge mountains, the route continues through a picture-book forest in the immediate vicinity of the Steinitzenalm. The descent is to Bad Mitterndorf. Luggage transport from Gröbming to Bad Mitterndorf.
Through the wild and romantic Koppentraun valley
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 166m Höhe (-): 286m
The train takes you comfortably from Bad Mitterndorf to Bad Aussee. The hike begins here through the Koppental valley along the Traun river to Obertraun. Via Sarstein, the trail crosses a suspension bridge. From here it becomes wildly romantic, as the hiking trail now leads along the banks of the wild and crystal-clear Koppentraun. You can often watch fly fishermen at work here. The Koppental refuge is a welcome place to stop for refreshments along the way. After the old railroad tunnel, you reach the Koppenbrüllerhöhle, a water cave that is still active and highly recommended to visit. In spring or after heavy rainfall, the noise in the cave swells to a roar, hence the name. Once you arrive in Obertraun, you walk a short distance along the Ostuferwanderweg to Hallstatt railroad station before taking the ferry across the lake to Hallstatt. Luggage transport from Bad Mitterndorf to Hallstatt.
Spectacular hike in the Inner Salzkammergut
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 1108m Höhe (-): 52m
The ferry takes you from Hallstatt Markt to Hallstatt station on the opposite side of the lake. Around 10,000 years ago, Lake Hallstatt was shaped by glacial ice and has its present appearance, reminiscent of the fjord landscape of Norway. Following the east shore hiking trail, you soon cross a suspension bridge over the deepest part of the lake. The shore hike along the lake and the surrounding mountains of the Salzkammergut is extremely scenic. From Bad Goisern, the ascent is via the Trockentannalm to the Goisererhütte at 1,592 meters. After a long day of hiking, the hut team will spoil you with delicacies and the view from the terrace is a wonderful reward. Please bring your own luggage and sleeping bag for the night.
Back to the sprawling mountain village of Gosau
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 46m Höhe (-): 873m
Via the Iglmoosalm you follow the Bibelsteig trail back to Gosau. The towers of the Gosaukamm come into view — formed 200 million years ago as a coral reef in warm seawater. For those who want to spend even more time in the Salzkammergut, additional overnight stays can be booked. For example, you can visit the Gosau Lakes, which even the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt was enthusiastic about and described as the eye of God. Luggage transport from Hallstatt to Gosau; pick-up of luggage in Gosau and delivery by 14:00 at the latest.
