Your hiking vaca­ti­on on the French Rivie­ra takes you from the Mari­ti­me Alps to the glo­wing Medi­ter­ra­ne­an coast. Your hiking tour takes you through the Roya Val­ley, which con­nects the Mari­ti­me Alps with the Medi­ter­ra­ne­an. You walk in the foot­s­teps of the for­mer salt road bet­ween Nice and Turin, on pan­o­r­amic paths, from one small authen­tic moun­tain vil­la­ge to the next, through den­se forests in nar­row val­leys and pic­tures­que gor­ges, past his­to­ric vil­la­ges clinging to steep moun­tain slo­pes. Dis­co­ver the mixed French and Ita­li­an cul­tu­re and histo­ry that have emer­ged through the chan­ging affi­lia­ti­ons. Explo­re the anci­ent towns of Breil and Sospel and stay over­night in the ama­zing moun­tain vil­la­ge of St. Agnes with gre­at views of the deep azu­re Medi­ter­ra­ne­an. Enjoy the ama­zing con­trasts of the Côte dAzur: the wild and rocky coast­li­ne, the pret­ty colorful fishing har­bors and the his­to­ric old town of Menton.

Day 1
Arri­val in Sospel
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Your hiking tour beg­ins in the small vil­la­ge of Sospel, sur­roun­ded by moun­tain slo­pes cover­ed with ter­ra­ced oli­ve gro­ves. Arri­val 1h30 train ride from Nice (not included). You will hear both lan­guages French Ita­li­an and abo­ve all feel both influen­ces in terms of cul­tu­re, archi­tec­tu­re and food. 
Day 2
A Side Trip to Ita­ly: Olivetta 
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 600m Höhe (-): 550m
After break­fast, cab trans­fer to the start of your hike: eit­her to Breil for the full hike or to Piè­ne Hau­te for the shorter hike, you just need to tell your cab dri­ver whe­re you want to start the hike. From Breil, a path leads you along stone ter­races and through cen­tu­ries-old oli­ve gro­ves to the tiny vil­la­ge of Piè­ne Hau­te, with a year-round popu­la­ti­on of just 30 souls. Then it’s downhill to the bor­der bet­ween France and Ita­ly. Here you can take a 45-minu­te detour to visit the pic­tures­que Ita­li­an vil­la­ge of Oli­vet­ta befo­re con­ti­nuing on the bota­ni­cal natu­re trail across a spec­ta­cu­lar gor­ge to Sospel. 
Day 3
To Euro­pe’s Hig­hest Coas­tal Vil­la­ge: Saint Agnes 
Distanz: 10 km Höhe (+): 550m Höhe (-): 550m
A short cab trans­fer takes you to the Col de Cas­til­lon pass, whe­re you have a fan­ta­stic view of the bright blue Medi­ter­ra­ne­an. Today you will cross an ash forest and hike on wide forest paths to the Mont Ours watch­tower, from whe­re you can even see the island of Cor­si­ca on a clear day. Then it’s a steep des­cent on a goat path to St Agnes, one of the most beau­tiful vil­la­ges in France. Just 3 km from the sea as the crow flies and 800 m abo­ve sea level, Sain­te Agnès is con­side­red the hig­hest coas­tal vil­la­ge in Euro­pe and is also one of the most beau­tiful vil­la­ges in France. 
Day 4
Relax or take a loop hike to Bau­don Mountain 
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 600m Höhe (-): 600m
From the high-alti­tu­de vil­la­ge of Sain­te Agnès, the rou­te clim­bs ste­adi­ly over the Baus­son Pass. It takes 30 minu­tes along a small moun­tain road with pan­o­r­amic views of the sea. The sum­mit deS Cime de Bau­don offers an excep­tio­nal 360 view of the enti­re regi­on and the sur­roun­ding moun­tain peaks: a very nice ori­en­ta­ti­on table from which you can see all the way to the sum­mit of Sain­te Beau­me and the Alps. 
Day 5
From the Moun­ta­ins to the Coast
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 250m Höhe (-): 950m
After break­fast, you hike from the tran­quil­li­ty of the moun­tain vil­la­ge down to the glitz and glamor of the French Rivie­ra. It’s downhill to a series of steps that lead direct­ly down to Men­ton. Men­ton is right­ly con­side­red the most beau­tiful town on the Rivie­ra with colorful and very well res­to­red hou­ses. The micro­cli­ma­te around Men­ton, which is even mil­der than on the rest of the Côte d’A­zur, is par­ti­cu­lar­ly favorable for the cul­ti­va­ti­on of citrus fruits. The local eco­no­my is now geared towards high-end tou­rism, but the regi­on’s lemons and lemon pro­ducts (inclu­ding limon­cel­lo) can still be found. The after­noon is free to explo­re the colorful town of Men­ton or visit the Jean-Cpc­teai Muse­um, housed in a 17th cen­tu­ry fort­ress, and finish off with a swim in the Medi­ter­ra­ne­an! Num­e­rous mar­kets in Men­ton: cover­ed mar­ket every mor­ning, Tues­day mor­ning on Carei Squa­re, Satur­day mor­ning fish mar­ket at the harbor. 
Day 6
Choo­se bet­ween two hikes: St. Jean Cap Fer­rat or Eze
Distanz: 5 km Höhe (+): 400m Höhe (-): 400m
Today you can choo­se bet­ween two hikes to end your hiking adven­ture: Walk along the Nitz­sche path to Eze return 2h15, 5km, 400m/-400m Take the train from Vil­le­fran­che to Eze (not included). The medieval vil­la­ge of Eze sits defi­ant­ly on a rocky pro­mon­to­ry high abo­ve the coast. Today’s hike takes you along a well-main­tai­ned path from the coast to Eze, which is con­side­red one of the most beau­tiful vil­la­ges in France. Hike Vil­le­fran­che / St. Jean Cap Fer­rat 3h, 11km plus detour: It will take you an hour to walk around the eas­tern arm of the pen­in­su­la. Take the train from Men­ton to Vil­le­fran­che (not included). You start your hike around the famous St. Jean Cap Fer­rat, it’s a beau­tiful 3 hour coas­tal hike with the opti­on to add a 1 hour detour around the eas­tern arm of the pen­in­su­la. Final­ly, you can also visit the beau­tiful Vil­la Roth­schild (ent­rance fee not included). Train back to Men­ton (not included).

Tour cha­rac­ter
This hiking tour is gra­ded easy to mode­ra­te, the ter­rain with rocks under­foot can some­ti­mes be dif­fi­cult and requi­res sure­foo­ted­ness. The­re are also signi­fi­cant ascents and des­cents on some of the hikes. Read the descrip­ti­ons careful­ly to ensu­re that the hike is sui­ta­ble for you. We recom­mend hiking poles. 
Infor­ma­ti­on about Hotel St. Yves in St. Agnes 
A word of war­ning for Le Saint Yves Guest House in Saint Agnes — The Hotel Saint-Yves is loca­ted in the cen­ter of the vil­la­ge of Sain­te Agnès, which is one of the most beau­tiful vil­la­ges in France. It is the only accom­mo­da­ti­on in the vil­la­ge and a won­derful way to expe­ri­ence the vil­la­ge when the tou­rist crowds have left, when you have the vil­la­ge to yours­elf and see it in its authen­tic light, floa­ting high abo­ve the Medi­ter­ra­ne­an. While the hotel is very wel­co­ming, ser­ving ood­les of deli­cious food for din­ner and hos­ting many other hikers, it is essen­ti­al­ly a back­pa­cker-only hotel. It’s deli­bera­te­ly unpre­ten­tious. Not­hing fan­cy, and cer­tain­ly no frills. And becau­se the vil­la­ge of Sain­te Agnès is a real high­light in the hin­ter­land, a real gem, we think we should con­ti­nue to include this hotel in our vaca­ti­on, even if it has­n’t real­ly adapt­ed to the goûts du jour. we’­re sure you’ll feel the same way.

To ensu­re a stress-free start to your trip, we gene­ral­ly recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening. Some tours begin as ear­ly as noon; in tho­se cases, we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re. We’d be hap­py to book an extra night for you right away.
