Guided Alpine crossing Oberstdorf — Merano with hotel comfort

from 1.525,- per person

The Alpine crossing from Oberstdorf to Merano offers a perfect combination of adventure and comfort. Away from the busy E5 long-distance hiking trail, we follow variants of this classic route, accompanied by an experienced mountain hiking guide. From Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region, the journey takes us over the Hochalp Pass into the Lechtal valley and on through the rugged Lechtal Alps before we reach Imst via the Scharnitz Pass. Highlights such as the impressive Stuibenfall waterfall in the Ötztal valley and the rest stop at the Muttekopfhütte make the stages unforgettable. The queen’s stage takes us over the Timmelsjoch, the highest point of the tour at 2,474 m, before we descend into the Passeier Valley in South Tyrol. Every evening we enjoy the comforts of selected hotels so that we are well rested for the next pass crossings. Finally, we reach Merano with its Mediterranean charm and end the week relaxing on the palm-lined promenade. NEW from 2026: Small group with max. 12 participants for more safety and better supervision.

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Welcome to Oberstdorf and the Allgäu mountains
Distanz: 6 km Höhe (+): 100m Höhe (-): 100m
In the afternoon at 3 p.m., our guide welcomes us to the hotel for the start of our Alpine crossing. During a walk through Oberstdorf, we get a little insight into the well-known vacation resort on the northern edge of the Alps. We stop off at a cozy inn for dinner together.
Day 2
Through the Allgäu Alps — from Kleinwalsertal to Lechtal
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 770m Höhe (-): 500m
The first stage of our Alpine crossing takes us along old Walser trails. We start at the end of the Kleinwalsertal valley and hike through the Bärgunttal valley up to the Hochalp Pass (1,938 m), where we can enjoy the view of the Lechtal Alps and the countless Alpine peaks in front of us on a clear day. From the top of the pass, we then descend to the lower-lying Hochtannberg Pass and on to Warth. From there, a short bus ride takes us to our accommodation for the night.
Day 3
Through the Lechtal Alps into the Inn Valley
Distanz: 6 km Höhe (+): 650m Höhe (-): 525m
After breakfast, we take a cab transfer up to the Hahntennjoch. From here, we hike right into the heart of the rugged rocky landscape of the Lechtal Alps. Surrounded by steep peaks and high walls, we climb up to the 2,441 m high Scharnitzjoch. The descent first leads us down through wide scree fields, later interspersed with meadows where the odd marmot whistles, until we can take a break at the cozy Muttekopfhütte (1,934 m). Refreshed, it is then only a stone’s throw via the Drischlsteig to the top station of the cable car, which takes us down into the valley to Imst. From here we take a transfer to our next hotel.
Day 4
The Stuiben Falls: above the Ötztal valley on the way to Tyrol’s highest waterfall
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 900m Höhe (-): 780m
The Stuibenfall is 159 m high, making it the highest waterfall in Tyrol. We start directly at our hotel and first hike past the Ötzi village, where you can relive life at the time of the iceman. Shortly afterwards, the spray of the waterfall can be seen at the end of the valley. Via an impressive construction of bridges and steps, we can then ascend almost directly next to the masses of water and reach the Tauferberg. The high plateau above the Ötztal valley with its extraordinary vegetation and fascinating alternation of stone blocks, caves and spectacular viewpoints is a source of myths and stories. The trail takes us to the idyllic Wiesle inn, which is located in a clearing in the middle of the high forest and awaits our stop. From here we hike a little further above the Ötztal valley until we have the opportunity to descend into the valley.
Day 5
At 2,474 m over the main Alpine ridge — over the Timmelsjoch to South Tyrol
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 825m Höhe (-): 690m
The queen’s stage of our Alpine crossing lies ahead of us! On the famous E 5 long-distance hiking trail, we hike up to the highest point of the week, the Timmelsjoch. At an altitude of 2,474 m, we cross the main Alpine ridge here, moving from North Tyrol to South Tyrol, from Austria to Italy. A fantastic view is the reward for our efforts. The mountains of the Central Alps rise up around us, to the north the view extends far beyond the Ötztal valley to countless peaks and to the south one or two peaks of the Dolomites can be seen on the horizon. After a long rest, we then descend southwards into the Passeiertal valley towards our destination. We descend through an idyllic high mountain valley to the Hochfirst inn, from where we are taken to our next accommodation.
Day 6
Towards the destination: adventure hike on the Merano High Trail
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 850m Höhe (-): 660m
Our last hiking adventure starts with a short transfer up to the Merano High Mountain Trail. This panoramic trail is one of the most famous high-altitude trails in South Tyrol and offers breathtaking views of the Merano valley basin and the surrounding vineyards. Along the way, we pass remote mountain farms and rustic inns until we reach the summit of the Hochmuth (1,400 m). Here, directly above Merano, a unique panoramic view awaits us. After a rest, we take the cable car down to Dorf Tirol. Tirol Castle, which gives its name to the province of Tyrol, towers majestically there. We then float down past the first palm trees on the chairlift to the Mediterranean-style spa town. The perfect end to our hike is a relaxing walk along the lakeside promenade, where we can celebrate our crossing of the Alps with a glass of South Tyrolean wine and enjoy the unique blend of Alpine charm and southern flair.
Day 7
Farewell to Merano and the crossing of the Alps
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Now it’s time to say goodbye to Merano and South Tyrol. After breakfast, a shuttle bus takes us back to the starting point of our Alpine crossing in Oberstdorf. Time to review the experiences and impressions of the hikes of the last few days.
