Guided Alpine crossing on the E5 hut tour from Oberstdorf to Merano

from 1.195,- per person

The route on the E5 from Oberstdorf in the Allgäu to Merano in South Tyrol is the classic route across the Alps and offers an unforgettable adventure. On this Alpine crossing from hut to hut, you will experience the Alps in all their diversity and an impressive experience of nature. We start our Alpine crossing in the steep grassy mountains of the Allgäu Alps and then cross over to the Lechtal Alps with their striking rock formations. Through the Pitztal valley and into the Ötztal Alps, the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Central Alps lie before us, framed by the ice of the glaciers. Passing the Similaunhütte, we cross the main Alpine ridge at the highest point of our crossing at 3,019 meters above sea level. Here we are following in Ötzi’s footsteps, as the ice man’s discovery site is not far from the hut. From now on, however, it’s all downhill to the Vernagt reservoir, which we can already see sparkling blue from above. A shuttle takes us the last few kilometers towards Merano, where we can end the tour with a cool drink by the pool at our accommodation or use the time to stroll through Merano with its lively alleyways and arcades in the old town.

NEW: From 2026, group size will be limited to a maximum of 10 participants for better supervision, a more intensive experience and more safety.

Itinerary / Stages

Welcome to the Allgäu and ascent to the Kemptner Hütte
Distanz: 6 km Höhe (+): 900m Höhe (-): 50m
We meet our mountain guide for our Alpine crossing at the train station in Oberstdorf. After a short equipment check, we take the bus to Spielmannsau, where the ascent to the Kemptner Hütte begins. The varied path through the narrow Sperrbachtobel ravine up to the hut with its stunning views takes us straight into the magnificent mountain world of the Allgäu Alps.
Over the Mädelejoch to the Memminger Hütte in the Lechtal Alps
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 1150m Höhe (-): 975m
After breakfast, we start the ascent to the Mädelejoch (1,973 m). Here we cross the border from Germany to Austria, from Bavaria to Tyrol. Before our eyes lies the imposing mountain range of the Lechtal Alps with its many rocky peaks. We hike from the Joch down into the Höhenbach valley and, passing the Roßgumpenalpe and the Simms waterfall, reach the Lechtal valley and the small village of Holzgau. Here we treat ourselves to a short rest before a cab takes us a short distance to Madau. Now it’s time to climb back up to our overnight stop. Green meadows, a clear mountain lake and rocky peaks frame the Memminger Hütte at an altitude of 2,242 meters in one of the most beautiful places in the Lechtal Alps.
Through the Zammer Loch into the Inn Valley
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 500m Höhe (-): 1875m
A long stage through a fairytale mountain landscape lies ahead of us, which is why we set off early in the morning. Our route leads us along the Seewiseen lakes from the impressive mountain basin of the Memminger Hütte through rocky terrain up to the Seescharte (2,599 m). The reward for this ascent is a breathtaking view. The descent begins steeply. The route then continues on a flatter path to the Oberlochalpe and the Unterlochalpe, which invites you to take a short break. Strengthened with bacon and cheese, we continue our tour to the Zammer Loch. We hike down through this mystical, deeply carved gorge landscape via a path carved into the rock face to Zams in the Inntal valley.
From the Venet to the Braunschweiger Hütte at the end of the Pitztal valley
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 1350m Höhe (-): 1550m
From the Venetbahn mountain station, we hike high above the Inntal valley to the summit of the Venet, the Glanderspitze (2,512 m). The free-standing summit massif offers an excellent panoramic view of the Tyrolean mountains. Our route continues across alpine pastures and mountain meadows to Wenns in the Pitztal valley, from where a transfer takes us to the end of the valley to Mittelberg. This is where the second part of today’s stage begins, the ascent to the Braunschweiger Hütte. Passing an impressive waterfall, we ascend in serpentines until the view opens up to the imposing glacier ice of the still large Mittelberg glacier. The hut is located at an altitude of 2,759 meters, almost on the edge of the Karlesferner. We can end the day on the hut terrace with a direct view of the glacier.
In the glacier world of the Ötztal Alps to the Martin-Busch-Hütte
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 1025m Höhe (-): 1375m
Today we experience a fascinating hike over the Pitztaler Jöchl (2,996 m) into the Ötztal and on to the glacier village of Vent. This section is the most alpine part of our crossing of the Alps, with short passages secured by wire ropes. During the ascent to the Joch, there is a breathtaking view of the ice of the Karlesferner, while the majestic glacier peaks of the Ötztal and Stubai Alps await us at the top. After the descent to the Rettenbachferner, we take a short bus ride to the Tiefenbachferner. This is where the Venter Höhenweg trail begins, leading us to the mountaineering village of Vent with its magnificent panoramic views. After a well-earned rest, the last ascent of the day awaits us — the Martin-Busch-Hütte (2,501 m) in the middle of the rugged wilderness of the main Alpine ridge is our destination.
The route over the main Alpine ridge and on towards Merano
Distanz: 10 km Höhe (+): 525m Höhe (-): 1350m
Today we cross the main Alpine ridge and hike from the high alpine region of the Ötztal Alps down to South Tyrol. From the Martin-Busch-Hütte we ascend through the Niedertal valley to the Similaunhütte hut surrounded by glaciers. At a proud 3,019 meters above sea level, we reach the highest point of our Alpine crossing here. During a short break, we can enjoy the view of the ice-covered summit of the Similaun (3,599 m). From the hut, the route descends steeply into the Tisental valley. At the bottom, Lake Vernagt already sparkles in bright blue, the destination of today’s stage. We cover the last few kilometers towards Merano by cab. We can end the tour by the pool of our accommodation under palm trees or use the time to explore the old town of Merano.
Farewell to Merano and return to Oberstdorf
