Bet­ween Pro­vence and the Alps lies the Ver­don Natio­nal Park and one of the most magni­fi­cent and impres­si­ve land­scapes: the Ver­don Gor­ge, a val­ley up to 700m deep that has been car­ved into the lime­s­tone over mil­li­ons of years. The resul­ting land­scape is an Elda­ora­do for all hikers. Here, the lar­ge larch trees and green val­leys ming­le with the dry vege­ta­ti­on of Pro­vence and tower over the gor­ges and Lake Sain­te Croix. You start your hiking tour in one of the most beau­tiful vil­la­ges in France: Moustiers-Sain­te-Marie, which is often com­pared to a Pro­ven­çal crib. It lies at the foot of a steep rocky slo­pe and is famous for its pot­tery. You will spend a night in La Palud and Point Sub­li­me at the ent­rance to the famous Mar­tel trail, whe­re steep lime­s­tone cliffs and breath­ta­king pan­o­r­amic views of the jag­ged moun­tain peaks await you! Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Day 1: Moustiers, the gate­way to the Ver­don and Hau­te Provence
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Moustiers-Sain­te-Marie is one of the most char­ming vil­la­ges in Pro­vence, famous for its pot­tery. The Moustiers Roman road was the only means of trans­por­ta­ti­on bet­ween Cas­tel­la­ne and Moustiers until the 19th cen­tu­ry. Be sure to visit the pot­tery muse­um and the num­e­rous work­shops in the streets of the village. 
Day 2
Day 2: Pan­o­r­amic hike abo­ve Moustiers
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 130m Höhe (-): 130m
Hike 1 : Walk to the Not­re Dame de Beau­voir cha­pel // In Moustiers-Sain­te-Marie, you will be fasci­na­ted by the cha­pel that towers bet­ween the two rocks abo­ve the vil­la­ge. It was built bet­ween the 12th and 16th cen­tu­ries and has been a lis­ted buil­ding sin­ce 1921. It is part­ly Roma­nes­que and part­ly Gothic. Hike 2 : Cir­cu­lar hike to the Bel­ve­de­re du Tre­gu­ier // An easy pan­o­r­amic hike abo­ve Moustiers. The trail starts in front of the Sain­te-Anne cha­pel, which dates back to the 12th cen­tu­ry. You walk along the lime­s­tone cliffs of the Moustiers-Sain­te-Marie area befo­re ente­ring the forest. This hike offers a beau­tiful view of the restan­ques (from the Pro­ven­çal word res­tanco): dry stone ter­races plan­ted with oli­ve trees. You walk through a land­scape of broom and oak trees. Along the way, you will fol­low the Tré­gu­ier bota­ni­cal trail and dis­co­ver the dif­fe­rent plant spe­ci­es in the area. The Ver­don gor­ges are a para­di­se for bird­wat­chers: grif­fon vul­tures, gol­den eagles, pere­gri­ne fal­cons. From the view­point on a rocky peak, you have a 360-degree pan­o­r­amic view of Lake Sain­te-Croix, the val­ley and the sur­roun­ding cliffs! You hike back to Moustiers. 
Day 3
Day 3: From La Palud to Point Sublime
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 860m Höhe (-): 1030m
Mor­ning cab trans­fer to La Palud and start of the hike to Pont Sub­li­me. After a fair­ly steep climb, you will come across cen­tu­ry-old oaks and bee­ches as well as other plant spe­ci­es befo­re over­loo­king the gor­ges from abo­ve and the vil­la­ge of La Palud sur Ver­don. Con­ti­nue along the Baou path bet­ween rocks and gor­ges to Rou­gon, a vil­la­ge that domi­na­tes the gor­ges and an ide­al spot for bird­wat­ching, espe­ci­al­ly vul­tures. When you arri­ve at Point Sub­li­me, you have the opti­on of doing an addi­tio­nal cir­cu­lar walk. Don’t for­get your flash­light and a war­mer jacket as it is chil­ly in the tun­nels. You hike down to the ent­rance of the Ver­don Gor­ge. First you pass Point Sub­li­me, one of the most impres­si­ve places in the gor­ge. Then a beau­tiful des­cent fol­lows to the Sam­son cor­ri­dor to the beau­tiful tur­quoi­se river. Final­ly, you will dis­co­ver the ent­rance to the Ver­don Gor­ge, which leads through the tun­nels of the ent­rance to the famous sen­tier Mar­tel: Enter the Sam­son Cor­ri­dor car­ved into the rock and mar­vel at the two win­dows car­ved into the rock, which offer a magni­fi­cent view of the Ver­don Gor­ge and the breath­ta­king cliffs. You then take a dif­fe­rent rou­te back to Point Sublime. 
Day 4
Day 4: The breath­ta­king view­point of Rancoumas
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 850m Höhe (-): 850m
Today’s hike takes you across an old Roman bridge over the Ver­don river­bed. Once you have pas­sed the left bank, you will head up to the ham­let of Ent­re­ver­ges. Once you reach the spec­ta­cu­lar Ran­cou­mas view­point at 981 m abo­ve sea level, you will dis­co­ver a natu­ral ramp abo­ve the Ver­don, from whe­re you can enjoy the view of the Ver­don River flowing seve­ral hundred meters below. You fol­low the cliffs to Tri­gan­ce, a typi­cal Pro­ven­çal vil­la­ge. If you suf­fer from a seve­re fear of heights, plea­se cont­act us for more infor­ma­ti­on about the tour. The­re is no real dan­ger, but the view­point of Ran­cou­mas is not equip­ped with safe­ty devices. A small natu­ral para­pet allows you to enjoy the view of the gor­ges (the steep des­cent is wit­hout bar­riers): We advi­se peo­p­le who are sen­si­ti­ve to ver­ti­go not to do this hike. 
Day 5
Day 5: Au revoir le Verdon!
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Trans­fer to Point sub­li­me. End of the trip. You can take the bus to Riez and then ano­ther bus to Aix en Pro­vence. From the­re, take the train to Paris or Mar­seil­le. To get to Nice: Bus to Cas­tel­la­ne and then bus to Nice. You can also take the his­to­ric pan­o­r­amic train TRAIN DES PIGNES from St André to Nice (but not included) in this case we can book a cab from Cas­tel­la­ne to St And­re at an addi­tio­nal cost.

To ensu­re a stress-free start to the trip, we recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening in most cases. Some tours start as ear­ly as mid­day, in which case we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re and will be hap­py to book an extra night for you at the same time. The indi­vi­du­al return jour­ney takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilo­me­ters are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al kilo­me­ters cover­ed. This tour is not sui­ta­ble for peo­p­le with redu­ced mobility.

No mat­ter how well plan­ned a trip is, in rare cases unex­pec­ted things hap­pen. At such times, it’s nice to have someone you can rely on on site. For this reason, you will have a local cont­act per­son on our indi­vi­du­al acti­vi­ty tours who will be hap­py to pro­vi­de you with infor­ma­ti­on and, as sta­ted in the tra­vel docu­ments, can be cont­ac­ted in an emergency.
If you suf­fer from a seve­re fear of heights
Plea­se cont­act us for more infor­ma­ti­on about the tour. The­re is no real dan­ger, but the view­point of Ran­cou­mas is not secu­red. A small natu­ral para­pet allows you to enjoy the view of the gor­ges (the steep des­cent is imme­dia­te with no bar­riers): Peo­p­le who are sen­si­ti­ve to ver­ti­go should not go. You must be fami­li­ar with hiking in moun­tai­nous ter­rain. You will need good wal­king shoes for the enti­re trip. The hikes are most­ly on good paths, even if they are some­ti­mes steep and rocky and some­ti­mes con­sist of loo­se limestone. 
Tour cha­rac­ter
This level is for guests who regu­lar­ly do sports (hiking, cycling, etc.). You are in good phy­si­cal con­di­ti­on and have no pro­blem wal­king uphill at a slow pace over a lon­ger peri­od of time. You hike over dif­fe­rent types of ter­rain. No spe­cial skills are requi­red as you will have no tech­ni­cal dif­fi­cul­ties. Good, relia­ble hiking boots and hiking poles are recom­men­ded. On the hikes you will hike bet­ween 4 and 5 hours per day — 10 to 15 km, alt­hough you can expect some uneven or steep sec­tions during your hike. Avera­ge ascent/descent of 300 to 650 meters per hike.

TO AIX EN PROVENCE: Bus Point sub­li­me / Riez. From Riez by public bus to Aix en Pro­vence OR pri­va­te trans­fer. TO NIZZA: Bus to Cas­tel­la­ne and then bus Cas­tel­la­ne / Nice . From Cas­tel­la­ne, trans­fer to St. André and train to Nice (small his­to­ric pan­o­r­amic train). 
Jour­ney to Moustiers
FROM AIX EN PROVENCE: Bus from Aix cen­ter to Riez. Then bus to Moustiers (bus LER27 B21) OR we can orga­ni­ze an addi­tio­nal trans­fer to Moustiers (20 minu­tes) . We can also orga­ni­ze a direct trans­fer from Aix to Moustiers (1h30). FROM NICE: Bus line from Nice to Cas­tel­la­ne (Bus LER 31) Bus Cas­tel­la­ne / Moustiers OR we can orga­ni­ze an addi­tio­nal trans­fer . Train from Nice to Saint And­re des Alpes (small his­to­ri­cal pan­o­r­amic train — Train des Pig­nes) and then addi­tio­nal trans­fer to Moustiers.
