Individual crossing of the Alps Oberstdorf — Merano with hotel comfort 7 days // medium difficulty

from 995,- per person

One of the most famous Alpine crossings leads from Oberstdorf to Merano. On our impressive route on the trail of the famous E5 long-distance hiking trail, you will experience the full diversity of the Alpine landscape: from the green Allgäu region to the majestic Tyrolean mountains and the Mediterranean Passeier Valley, where Merano welcomes you. Waterfalls, gorges, alpine pastures and mountain passes make this route unforgettable. Thanks to luggage transfers, you can hike comfortably from hotel to hotel and enjoy the beauty of nature. You start on historic Walser trails into the Lechtal valley, hike through the Ötztal valley, cross the Timmelsjoch pass and reach the Passeiertal valley. Steep peaks and craggy rocks accompany you as you take a break at cozy huts. The crowning glory: a glass of South Tyrolean wine on the palm-lined promenade in Merano.

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
The gateway to the Allgäu Alps: Welcome to Oberstdorf
Distanz: 6 km Höhe (+): 100m Höhe (-): 100m
Individual arrival in Oberstdorf, the starting point of your crossing of the Alps to Merano. We recommend arriving in the early afternoon and taking a stroll through the well-known vacation resort against the backdrop of the Allgäu Alps. In good weather, a cable car ride up the Nebelhorn, Oberstdorf’s 2,224 m high local mountain with a fantastic panoramic view of the summit, is also highly recommended. You will receive information and tips with your travel documents.
Day 2
From Kleinwalsertal to Lechtal: old Walser trails over the Hochalp Pass
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 770m Höhe (-): 500m
Your first stage of the Alpine crossing begins on old Walser trails. You start at the end of the Kleinwalsertal valley and hike through the idyllic Bärgunttal valley up to the 1,938 m high Hochalp Pass. If visibility is good, you can enjoy the impressive view of the Lechtal Alps and the countless Alpine peaks. From the top of the pass, you descend to the lower-lying Hochtannberg Pass and hike on to Warth. A short bus ride takes you from there to your accommodation in the Lechtal valley.
Day 3
From the Hahntennjoch through the rugged Lechtal Alps
Distanz: 6 km Höhe (+): 650m Höhe (-): 525m
A cab takes you up to the Hahntennjoch, where today’s tour begins. From here you hike directly into the rugged, spectacular rocky landscape of the Lechtal Alps. Surrounded by rugged peaks and steep walls, you climb up to the 2,441 m high Scharnitzjoch. Once at the top, the view opens up to the south, as far as the peaks of the Ötztal Alps. The descent through the rocky arena of the Scharnitzkar leads you first over wide scree fields, then over lush alpine meadows and you might hear a marmot whistling somewhere. You soon reach the rustic Muttekopfhütte (1,934 m), where a well-earned break awaits you. Refreshed, you continue along the Drischlsteig trail to the cable car mountain station, which takes you back down into the valley towards Imst.
Day 4
Spectacular to Tyrol’s highest waterfall: the 159 m high Stuiben Falls
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 900m Höhe (-): 780m
Get ready for a real nature experience! The Stuiben Falls plunge over 159 meters into the depths, making it the highest waterfall in Tyrol and a real spectacle. You set off directly from your hotel, past the Ötzi village, where you can immerse yourself in the world of the famous iceman. Shortly afterwards, the excitement builds: at the end of the valley, you can already see the rising spray of the waterfall. A spectacular construction of bridges and steps leads you directly up to the thundering masses of water — a real adventure! Once at the top, you reach the Tauferberg, a high plateau with wild vegetation, mystical boulders and caves. The trail continues to the idyllically situated Gasthaus Wiesle, which awaits you in the middle of the high forest — perfect for a well-earned break. Afterwards you hike for a while with breathtaking views over the Ötztal before you have the opportunity to descend into the valley.
Day 5
Off to South Tyrol: Crossing the Alps on the 2,474 m high Timmelsjoch Pass
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 825m Höhe (-): 690m
Today is the queen’s stage of your Alpine crossing! You follow the legendary E5 long-distance hiking trail and climb steadily uphill to the highest point of the week: the Timmelsjoch at 2,474 meters. Here you cross the main Alpine ridge, leave North Tyrol and enter South Tyrol from Austria to Italy, step by step. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a panorama that will take your breath away! The mighty peaks of the Central Alps rise up all around you, to the north your gaze wanders far over the Ötztal valley, and to the south the first peaks of the Dolomites flash on the horizon. After a well-earned rest, the descent lies ahead of you. You follow a picturesque high mountain valley down into the Passeiertal valley, always heading towards your destination. Finally, you reach the Gasthaus Hochfirst, perfect for a last refreshment before taking the bus to your next accommodation. What a fantastic day!
Day 6
The grand finale: Hike on the Merano High Mountain Trail
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 850m Höhe (-): 660m
The last stage of your Alpine crossing begins! A short transfer takes you to the Merano High Mountain Trail, one of the most beautiful panoramic trails in South Tyrol. Right from the start, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Merano valley basin and the surrounding vineyards. The trail leads past remote mountain farms and rustic inns, perfect for a little refreshment. Finally, you reach the summit of the Hochmuth (1,400 m) with its gigantic view.
