Itinerary / Stages

Past the Kemptner Hütte over the Allgäu Alps
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 985m Höhe (-): 875m
After your individual journey to Oberstdorf, you continue by coach to Spielmannsau, the starting point of the first stage of the crossing of the Alps to Merano. Ahead of you lies the varied ascent up to the main ridge of the Allgäu Alps. Before that, you reach the Kemptner Hütte just below the ridge, where you should definitely take a break. Once you have regained your strength, continue uphill to the Mädelejoch (1,973 m), the transition from Bavaria to Tyrol. Here you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Lechtal Alps opposite. The descent into the Lechtal valley takes you downhill through the Höhenbachtal valley, past the Roßgumpenalpe and the Simms waterfall to your destination for the day in Holzgau.
Into the Lechtal Alps to the Memminger Hütte
Distanz: 18 km Höhe (+): 1225m Höhe (-): 80m
You start your further route on the E5 directly from your accommodation in Holzgau. First, the route leads along the Lech, through one of the last wild river landscapes in Central Europe. Shortly before the small village of Bach, the E5 turns south into the Madautal valley, at the end of which the ascent to the Memminger Hütte awaits. Your destination lies at an altitude of 2,242 meters in the middle of lush green meadows, right next to a clear mountain lake and surrounded by rocks in one of the most beautiful places in the Lechtal Alps. After yesterday’s strenuous start to your crossing of the Alps, you have the option of taking it a little easier on today’s stage: You can take the bus from your accommodation to the village of Bach or drive directly to the parking lot of the Memminger Hütte and start from there.
Through the Zammer Loch into the Inn Valley
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 500m Höhe (-): 1875m
You start early in the morning, as a long stage with a fairytale mountain landscape lies ahead of you. From the impressive mountain basin of the Memminger Hütte, you hike along the banks of the Seewiesen and climb through stony terrain up to the Seescharte (2,599 m). A fantastic view is the reward for the ascent. The route now descends steeply, first to the Oberlochalpe and then on to the Unterlochalpe. It’s worth taking a break here for bacon and cheese and to replenish your water supply. The route now continues to the Zammer Loch. You hike down through this mystical, deeply carved gorge landscape via a path carved into the rock face to Zams in the Inntal valley.
From the Venet into the Pitztal and ascent to the Braunschweiger Hütte
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 1350m Höhe (-): 1550m
From the Venetbahn mountain station, you hike high above the Inntal valley to the summit of the Venet, the Glanderspitze (2,512 m). The free-standing summit massif offers an excellent panoramic view of Tyrol’s mountains. Past the Galfunalm and the Larcheralm, your route leads you across alpine pastures and mountain meadows to Wenns in the Pitztal valley. Take the Postbus to the end of the Pitztal to Mittelberg. The second part of today’s stage starts here, the ascent to the Braunschweiger Hütte. Passing a waterfall, the route ascends in serpentines, with a view of the glacier ice of the still large Mittelbergferner. The hut is situated at an altitude of 2,759 meters, almost directly on the edge of the Karlesferner. You can end the day with a direct view of the glacier.
Surrounded by the glacier peaks of the Ötztal Alps to the Martin-Busch-Hütte
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 1025m Höhe (-): 1375m
Today you hike over the Pitztaler Jöchl (2,996 m) into the Ötztal and on to the glacier village of Vent. This stage is the most alpine section of your crossing of the Alps; short sections are secured with wire ropes. On the ascent, you have a fascinating view of the Karlesferner. Once at the top, the glacier peaks of the Ötztal and Stubai Alps reveal themselves. After the descent to the Rettenbachferner, you take a short bus ride through the Rosi-Mittermaier-Tunnel, Europe’s highest road tunnel, to the Tiefenbachferner. The Venter Höhenweg trail starts here, taking you to the mountaineering village of Vent with its magnificent panoramic views. After a rest, the last ascent of the day — the Martin-Busch-Hütte (2,501 m) in the middle of the rugged wilderness of the main Alpine ridge — is your destination for the day.
Over the main Alpine ridge to Mediterranean Merano
Distanz: 10 km Höhe (+): 525m Höhe (-): 1350m
Today you cross the main Alpine ridge and hike from the high alpine region of the Ötztal Alps down to South Tyrol. In the morning you start at the Martin-Busch-Hütte and climb up through the Niedertal valley to the Similaunhütte hut surrounded by glaciers. At an altitude of 3,019 meters, you have reached the highest point of your Alpine crossing here. During a short break, you can admire the view of the ice-covered summit of the Similaun (3,599 m). From the hut, the route then descends steeply into the Tisental valley. Passing alpine meadows, you can already see Lake Vernagt glistening blue in the valley below, the destination of this stage. Once at the bottom, you can stop for a bite to eat before taking the bus for the last few kilometers to Merano. Here you can celebrate your crossing of the Alps in the leafy streets of the old town.
Farewell to the crossing of the Alps
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
The night in the hotel has certainly already given you some rest from the exertions of the previous days. Over a leisurely breakfast, you can look back on the experiences of your Alpine crossing. From Merano, you can either drive directly back to your home town or use our optional transfer back to Oberstdorf. Or book a few extra nights and extend your stay in Merano/Meran to explore the town and the surrounding area.
