Itinerary / Stages

Individual arrival in Mittenwald
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Excursion to the source of the Isar
Distanz: 40 km Höhe (+): 415m Höhe (-): 415m
Today begins with an excursion to the main sources of the Isar in the high mountains. A wide forest road leads you to the source of the Isar. From there, a natural path allows you to explore the first springs on foot. The crystal-clear young Isar gushes out of the moss-covered rocks above Mittenwald.
Mittenwald — Großer Ahornboden / Eng Alm
Distanz: 51 km Höhe (+): 445m Höhe (-): 133m
The second stage takes you from Mittenwald over the Großer Ahornboden to the Eng-Alm. The Großer Ahornboden is a flat plateau which, with its stands of maple trees up to 600 years old, is a true natural spectacle, especially in spring, summer and fall. Framed by the massive limestone cliffs, the Großer Ahornboden also impresses with a breathtaking all-round view of the Karwendel mountains. You will spend your third night today in the Eng-Alm, the largest alpine pasture in Europe.
Eng Alm — Lenggries — Bad Tölz
Distanz: 44 km Höhe (+): 32m Höhe (-): 320m
From the idyllic alpine village, the route continues today via Vorderiß to the turquoise-blue Sylvenstein reservoir, which is perfect for a first short break. The Isar then takes you via Fall, Winkl and Fleck to Lenggries, a traditional community at the foot of the Brauneck. The last stop of the day is Bad Tölz. Use the remaining time to visit the historic old town of Bad Tölz.
Excursion to Lake Tegernsee
Distanz: 50 km Höhe (+): 380m Höhe (-): 380m
Today’s destination is Lake Tegernsee. The deep blue, refreshing lake is very popular with water sports enthusiasts and the local cafés and restaurants along the promenade invite you to enjoy an aromatic coffee or a refreshing beer. The latter should be enjoyed in the legendary Tegernseer Bräustüberl, which is already world-famous for its Tegernsee beer.
Bad Tölz — Munich
Distanz: 58 km Höhe (+): 343m Höhe (-): 208m
With renewed vigor, the route then continues leisurely through the towns of Geretsried, Wolfratshausen and Grünwald. Now you are already at the gates of the state capital Munich. Bavaria Filmstadt, Hellabrunn Zoo and the Deutsches Museum are just a few of the sights that are well worth a visit. The English Garden is also one of the city’s highlights. Here, at the foot of the Chinese Tower, you can treat yourself to a little refreshment in the beer garden and enjoy the end of the day.
Munich — Freising
Distanz: 40 km Höhe (+): 27m Höhe (-): 74m
The following stage takes you from the state capital via Garching and Ismaning along the course of the river to Freising. The landscape along this section of the route resembles a kind of idyllic no man’s land, which only allows you to re-enter modern civilization every few kilometers via small bridges.
Freising — Landshut
Distanz: 41 km Höhe (+): 8m Höhe (-): 57m
Today you cycle via Moosburg to Landshut. On this route you will also find the nature reserve ‑Vogelfreistätte Mittlere Isarstauseen-. From Moosburg, however, there are two options to get to Landshut: the first option takes you along the high banks on the hills above the Isar or you can stay on the main route along the Isar until you reach Landshut. Landshut impresses on the one hand with its historic center and on the other with Trausnitz Castle.
Landshut — Dingolfing
Distanz: 31 km Höhe (+): 3m Höhe (-): 38m
From Landshut, you first travel to Niederaichbach and then on to Dingolfing. Dingolfing has an interesting old town and an interesting museum, which provides a perfect insight into Dingolfing’s urban and industrial history. A visit to the BMW factory is also highly recommended.
Dingolfing — Plattling
Distanz: 40 km Höhe (+): 3m Höhe (-): 44m
From here, take the dirt road to Landau. You can reach the next town of Plattling either along the riverbank or by taking the inland route, which is of course explained in more detail in our travel documents. Plattling is a very hospitable town that has been a partner municipality of Scharnitz, the source of the Isar, since 2009.
Plattling — Excursion to the Danube / Isar estuary
Distanz: 24 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
The crowning glory of the cycle tour is the Isar estuary, a magnificent floodplain landscape with an interesting information center. It stretches from Plattling to the mouth of the Danube between Deggendorf and Moos. The main route ends at the Danube ferry in Thundorf, the alternative route in the Danube town of Deggendorf. Relax on this short stage to the Danube and the surrounding area or enjoy one or more rest days at Isar.
