The Jura Trail is a 237-kilo­met­re cir­cu­lar hiking trail that invi­tes you to explo­re Bava­ria’s impres­si­ve low moun­tain ran­ge land­scape. On natu­ral paths, you will dis­co­ver a diver­si­ty that is second to none: pic­tures­que river val­leys, Medi­ter­ra­ne­an-style karst land­scapes, fra­grant juni­per heaths and shady forests. His­to­ri­cal tre­asu­res such as old cast­les, monas­te­ries and impo­sing rock for­ma­ti­ons line the rou­te and make every stage an expe­ri­ence. The flo­ra and fau­na will also delight you: with a bit of luck, you may encoun­ter rare spe­ci­es such as pere­gri­ne fal­cons and king­fi­shers or dis­co­ver orchi­ds, qua­king grass and many other bota­ni­cal high­lights. Thanks to con­ti­nuous sign­pos­ting and num­e­rous refresh­ment stops, every hike is pure joy. Look for­ward to a very spe­cial natu­re expe­ri­ence in the Bava­ri­an Jura.

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Indi­vi­du­al arrival
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Wel­co­me to your tour. Today you will be che­cking into your accom­mo­da­ti­on. The idyl­lic hil­ly land­scape around Eils­brunn alre­a­dy gives you an idea of what to expect over the next few days. 
Day 2
Eils­brunn Pielenhofen
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 340m Höhe (-): 420m
The first sec­tion of this stage leads over impres­si­ve dry slo­pes, which are among the most beau­tiful in the Jura, to the Schön­ho­fen Natu­re­fri­ends House. The trail con­ti­nues through open mea­dows and along nar­row forest paths, whe­re a 50-met­re detour to the Räu­ber­höh­le (rob­ber’s cave) — the habi­tat of num­e­rous bats — beck­ons. Befo­re rea­ching the vil­la­ge of Penk, the­re is a magni­fi­cent view of the Naab Val­ley with its forests and Jura rocks. After a break at the Spitz­au­er inn, the trail leads through the idyl­lic Pen­ker Val­ley with its wide mea­dows. The last few kilo­me­ters run along nar­row forest paths until the impres­si­ve monas­tery in Pie­len­ho­fen comes into view. 
Day 3
Pelen­ho­fen — Kallmünz
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 320m Höhe (-): 260m
In Pie­len­ho­fen, the Jurast­eig trail cros­ses the Naab and leads through the beech forest abo­ve the sett­le­ment. A pic­tures­que forest path runs through the Naa­b­ran­gen natu­ral forest reser­ve with its pine and beech forests. After a short, steep climb abo­ve Klein­dug­gen­dorf, the­re is a beau­tiful view of Dug­gen­dorf. As far as Heit­zen­ho­fen, the trail runs through a varied mixed forest, whe­re the rare dip­tam blooms in ear­ly sum­mer. On the oppo­si­te side of the river, the trail leads through but­ter­fly-rich mea­dows and hedges up to the pla­teau with the vil­la­ge of Dal­la­cken­ried. From the­re, you can enjoy a magni­fi­cent view of the Jura land­scape befo­re the trail leads down towards pic­tures­que Kallmünz. 
Day 4
Kall­münz — Schmidmühlen
Distanz: 18 km Höhe (+): 360m Höhe (-): 400m
After a detour to pic­tures­que Kall­münz with its striking cast­le, the Jurast­eig trail lea­ves the Naab­tal val­ley and leads into the Vil­s­tal val­ley. Via Rohr­bach, you fol­low a semi-shady path up towards Dietl­dorf, whe­re hor­se studs near Birk­hof and wild roses in bloom in the Vils val­ley pro­vi­de delightful impres­si­ons. Varied pine and deci­duous forests lead the rou­te fur­ther north. At Greß­thal, sun­ny Jura mea­dows pro­vi­de a final open back­drop befo­re the rou­te con­ti­nues through the forest towards Lan­zen­ried and on along forest paths to Schmid­müh­len. Trans­fer to your over­night accom­mo­da­ti­on in Kallmünz. 
Day 5
Schmid­müh­len — Hohenburg
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 220m Höhe (-): 180m
Trans­fer back to Schmid­müh­len in the mor­ning. To the west of Schmid­müh­len, the Jura Trail leads up the Blau­grund on a nar­row path and winds its way roman­ti­cal­ly through natu­ral mixed forest. On the hill, the rou­te runs more even­ly through the forest and offers beau­tiful views over the undu­la­ting land­scape befo­re Win­buch. After Win­buch, the trail leads across open are­as and downhill through shady forest. In the Lau­ter­ach­tal val­ley near Aicha, beech forests, dry grass­land and spar­se pine forests cha­rac­te­ri­ze the rou­te to Hohen­burg. Short­ly befo­re Hohen­burg, you cross a juni­per heath with a view of the Stett­kir­chen pil­grimage church. From the Cal­va­ry, you can final­ly enjoy a magni­fi­cent view of the town and the cast­le ruins. 
Day 6
Hohen­burg — Kastl
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 380m Höhe (-): 320m
From Hohen­burg, the Jurast­eig trail leads up to the Jura pla­teau. Short­ly befo­re Aller­s­burg, a magni­fi­cent view of the ruins of Hohen­burg opens up, while Aller­s­burg its­elf impres­ses with its pic­tures­que St. Michael’s Church. At the edge of the forest, a rest area invi­tes you to take a break befo­re con­ti­nuing through orchid-rich pine forests and forest mea­dows. After the small sett­le­ment of Flü­gels­buch, you reach the Lau­ter­ach and cross it one last time. The last sec­tion leads over the Rechen­fels (549 m abo­ve sea level) on idyl­lic forest paths. Short­ly befo­re Kastl, the forest opens up and offers a view of Kastl Abbey Cast­le. Final­ly, you des­cend via a sett­le­ment to the mar­ket town of Kastl, whe­re you reach your desti­na­ti­on for the day. 
Day 7
Kastl — Oberwiesenacker
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 370m Höhe (-): 280m
At the begin­ning, the trail leads along a paved foot­path and later gra­vel and forest paths in the direc­tion of Pfaf­fen­ho­fen. After about half an hour, you reach the vil­la­ge, but lea­ve it again imme­dia­te­ly to reach Schwep­per­manns­burg Cast­le, which is only a few minu­tes away and was men­tio­ned in a docu­ment in 1329. Pas­sing a deer enclo­sure, you reach a field cross and fol­low the path through woods and fields to the Gemein­de­berg, which you half cir­cle befo­re fol­lo­wing nar­row paths to Holz­heim near Ober­feld. After field paths and a short sec­tion of road, you reach Engels­berg befo­re the path clim­bs slight­ly to the pil­grimage church of Maria Heil der Kran­ken, the hig­hest point of the Jurast­eig (621 m abo­ve sea level). From Habs­berg, the trail leads past the Haus am Habs­berg envi­ron­men­tal edu­ca­ti­on cen­ter and final­ly rea­ches Unter- and Oberwiesenacker. 
Day 8
Ober­wie­senacker — Deining
Distanz: 19 km Höhe (+): 210m Höhe (-): 280m
After pas­sing Unter- and Ober­wie­senacker, the hiker rea­ches the low­lands of the Schwar­ze Laber and the Deus­mau­er Moor natu­re reser­ve near Wei­ken­ham­mer. Pas­sing a deer enclo­sure near Dürn, the Jurast­eig con­ti­nues through forest and mea­dow land­scapes. After a long field path, the rou­te con­ti­nues from Rothen­fels through varied forests until it rea­ches the pil­grimage church in Len­gen­bach. On san­dy ground, the trail leads over the Schel­len­berg up into a pine forest and then to Arzt­ho­fen. The rou­te con­ti­nues along the Weis­se Laber val­ley, past the Sie­gen­ho­fer Müh­le mill, to Dei­ning. The train takes you to your over­night accom­mo­da­ti­on in Neu­markt in der Ober­pfalz in around 10 minutes. 
Day 9
Dei­ning — Holn­stein ‑Ber­ching
Distanz: 26 km Höhe (+): 450m Höhe (-): 520m
Our trans­fer will take you to the start of the tour in Dei­ning. Short­ly after the start in Dei­ning, it is worth making a detour to the his­to­ric rock cel­lars, which were once used as sto­rage faci­li­ties. Just one kilo­me­ter fur­ther on, an old quar­ry with colourful Dog­ger rock is fasci­na­ting. The trail leads past an idyl­lic forest pond and into the natu­re reser­ve of the Wei­ße Laber val­ley, which delights with its mars­hy wil­der­ness and impres­si­ve views. In Stern­berg, a beer gar­den at the Sip­pel­müh­le mill invi­tes you to take a break. The rou­te con­ti­nues through the land of 1000 springs, home to the arum, fire sala­man­der and king­fi­sher. Via the Mari­en­quel­le spring and shady forest paths, you final­ly reach the pic­tures­que vil­la­ge of Holn­stein. The last stretch takes you to Ber­ching, whe­re you will spend the night. 
Day 10
Ber­ching ‑Holn­stein — Dietfurt
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 210m Höhe (-): 260m
Trans­fer to Holn­stein, who­se name refers to the num­e­rous springs in the area. In the val­ley, the land­scape is cha­rac­te­ri­zed by free­ly gra­zing catt­le, which occa­sio­nal­ly seek a refres­hing dip in the river. From here, the trail leads through shady beech forests to the pla­teau and along the Wei­ße Laber through an idyl­lic land­scape. After Unter­bürg, whe­re a stone art­work of a spring awaits, the Jura Trail cros­ses the val­ley over a pic­tures­que natu­ral stone bridge. On level paths, you final­ly reach the Sie­ben­tä­ler­stadt Diet­furt a.d. Alt­mühl, your desti­na­ti­on and over­night stop today. 
Day 11
Diet­furt — Riedenburg
Distanz: 27 km Höhe (+): 640m Höhe (-): 650m
From Diet­furt, the lon­gest stage of the Jura Trail leads along the edge of the forest to Mühl­bach and along a nar­row path into the Alt­mühl­tal val­ley. In Mei­hern, a magni­fi­cent view of the Flü­gels­berg rock pin­na­cles opens up befo­re the trail clim­bs up to the Ross­kopf pla­teau via Deising. From here, the Jurast­eig shares the mar­kings with the Alt­mühl­tal-Pan­ora­ma­weg. After a view of Eggers­berg Cast­le, the trail leads past juni­per heaths and rock for­ma­ti­ons down into the val­ley. Via Ober­eg­gers­berg and Eggers­berg Cast­le, the rou­te leads along near-natu­ral oxbow lakes of the Alt­mühl and final­ly uphill one last time to Jachen­hau­sen. Final­ly, you reach the pearl of the Alt­mühl val­ley via the Schnei­der Cha­pel: Riedenburg. 
Day 12
Rie­den­burg — Kelheim
Distanz: 23 km Höhe (+): 500m Höhe (-): 520m
This per­haps most beau­tiful stage through the Alt­mühl and Danu­be val­leys fol­lows the signs for the Alt­mühl­tal Pan­ora­ma Trail. The trail leads across the Alt­mühl slo­pes to the Klamm natu­ral forest reser­ve with its fairy-tale rock com­plex and shady ravi­ne forest. After crossing the Alt­mühl bridge at Ein­th­al, a path clim­bs up to Prunn Cast­le, which offers spec­ta­cu­lar views. Con­ti­nuing towards Essing, you pass the azu­re-blue Blau­topf karst spring and cross the Alt­mühl on the Tatzl­wurm, one of the lon­gest woo­den bridges in Euro­pe. The Cel­tic ram­part offers a view of Wel­ten­burg Abbey. The Jura Trail final­ly leads through the Wel­ten­bur­ger Enge, past a uni­que rock and river land­scape to Kelheim. 
Day 13
Kel­heim — Bad Abbach
Distanz: 22 km Höhe (+): 390m Höhe (-): 390m
Today’s stage beg­ins by taking you through the old town of Kel­heim. Cul­tu­ral high­lights such as the Libe­ra­ti­on Hall or the archaeo­lo­gi­cal muse­um invi­te you to take a detour. In the north, the rou­te clim­bs up the Gold­berg, whe­re the first beech forests of the Jura land­scape can be seen. Befo­re Kap­fel­berg, the­re is a gre­at view of the Danu­be val­ley and the Teu­fels­fel­sen rocks. At Poi­kam, the Jurast­eig cros­ses to the other side of the Danu­be and leads through an idyl­lic hills­i­de forest to the spa gar­dens of Bad Abbach, famous for its heal­ing springs, which were used by Emper­or Charles V. 
Day 14
Bad Abbach — Eilsbrunn
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 410m Höhe (-): 330m
The rou­te initi­al­ly leads from Bad Abbach along the banks of the Danu­be to the pede­stri­an bridge in the north of the town. After a climb through the Kalk­ofen­ring sett­le­ment, the rou­te con­ti­nues through varied forests with beau­tiful views of the Danu­be val­ley. In Mat­ting, you cross the river on a cable fer­ry (ticket not included), and the Mat­tin­ger Hän­ge natu­re reser­ve impres­ses with steep cliffs and the oppor­tu­ni­ty to obser­ve pere­gri­ne fal­cons (plea­se check fer­ry ope­ning times in advan­ce). A short path leads to a van­ta­ge point with a view of the Danu­be val­ley. Via the Zuy­len­ka­pel­le cha­pel, you reach Alling in the val­ley of the Schwar­ze Laber, from whe­re a natu­ral path leads through beech forest to Eilsbrunn. 
Day 15

To ensu­re a stress-free start to the trip, we recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening in most cases. Some tours start as ear­ly as mid­day, in which case we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re and will be hap­py to book an extra night for you at the same time. The indi­vi­du­al return jour­ney takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilo­me­ters are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al kilo­me­ters cover­ed. This tour is not sui­ta­ble for peo­p­le with redu­ced mobility.

Arri­val
BY CAR: Via the A3, exit Nit­ten­dorf or Sin­zing and the rest of the way via coun­try road to your over­night accom­mo­da­ti­on. TRAIN: Take the regio­nal train to Sin­zing sta­ti­on and con­ti­nue by bus to your accommodation. 
Tour cha­rac­ter
You hike on well-main­tai­ned hiking trails. You should have a good basic level of fit­ness to be able to mana­ge the hikes of up to 8 hours. Tech­ni­cal­ly, the tour is easy to modera­te­ly difficult.
