This hike through three val­leys of the Kitz­bü­hel Alps—Hopfgarten, Kelch­sau, and Windautal—impressively com­bi­nes the expe­ri­ence of alpi­ne natu­re, vibrant moun­tain cul­tu­re, and scenic, enjoya­ble hikes. Start­ing from char­ming Hopf­gar­ten in the Bri­xen­tal Val­ley, the rou­te winds through the unspoi­led moun­tain land­scape of Kelchsau—with its tra­di­tio­nal farms, tran­quil alpi­ne pas­tu­res, and scenic high-alti­tu­de trails—all the way to the peaceful, unspoi­led high val­ley of Wind­au­tal. Diver­se stages lead through open alpi­ne mea­dows, over fores­ted rid­ges, and to scenic peaks, with the opti­on to choo­se easier or more chal­len­ging loop hikes depen­ding on your pre­fe­rence and fit­ness level. A spe­cial high­light is the tra­ver­se to the Lodron, one of the best van­ta­ge points in the Kitz­bü­hel Alps, offe­ring an impres­si­ve 360-degree pan­ora­ma stret­ching from the Wil­der Kai­ser to the gla­cia­ted peaks of the Hohe Tau­ern. Day 1
Get­ting to Hopfgarten

Arri­ve rela­xed in Hopf­gar­ten im Bri­xen­tal and enjoy the day.
Day 2
A Pre­lude Hike on the Hohe Salve
Distanz: 4 km Höhe (+): 30m Höhe (-): 0m
The rou­te winds through the diver­se moun­tain land­scape sur­roun­ding the Hohe Sal­ve. You’ll start by hiking through sun­ny forests and open mea­dows befo­re enjoy­ing an unfor­gettable pan­o­r­amic view from the sum­mit. From the­re, you can stop for a break at one of two eye-cat­ching spots: the Gip­fel­alm, with its rota­ting pan­o­r­amic ter­race, or the Uma­dum-Stu­be pan­o­r­amic restau­rant, both of which invi­te you to savor regio­nal deli­ca­ci­es. The next sec­tion leads down past the Alpen­gast­haus Rigi and offers impres­si­ve views along the way of the Bri­xen­tal Val­ley, the Kitz­bü­hel Alps, and bey­ond to Austria’s hig­hest mountains. 
Day 3
Hike from Hopf­gar­ten im Bri­xen­tal to Kelchsau
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 800m Höhe (-): 0m
The varied rou­te beg­ins with a gent­le climb through forests and mea­dows, pas­sing the magni­fi­cent farms of the Pen­ning­berg. After a short flat stretch toward Inner­pen­ning­berg, the second ascent beg­ins to the rustic Haag Alm (unmanned—a trough with chil­led bever­a­ges available for self-ser­vice). With no signi­fi­cant chan­ge in ele­va­ti­on, you’ll reach the Höhen­bran­dalm, whe­re the des­cent along a forest trail to the stage’s desti­na­ti­on, Kelch­sau, beg­ins. In Kelch­sau, you’ll also find some of the most beau­tiful tim­ber-framed hou­ses and farms. 
Day 4
2‑Peak Loop Hike or Hüt­tel­bo­den Loop Trail
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 614m Höhe (-): 0m
Today, you can choo­se bet­ween two cir­cu­lar hikes in Kelch­sau, each offe­ring a uni­que moun­tain expe­ri­ence. The easier rou­te fol­lows the Hüt­tel­bo­den Loop Trail, whe­re you can enjoy gent­le pan­o­r­amic views and a series of lei­su­re­ly sections—ideal for a rela­xed, enjoya­ble hike in an alpi­ne set­ting. The more chal­len­ging opti­on is only available start­ing in August. It ascends to the Schwaigberg­horn via the Feld­alp­horn, rewar­ding hikers with stee­per clim­bs and spec­ta­cu­lar pan­o­r­amic views of the sur­roun­ding moun­ta­ins. Both trails wind through char­ming alpi­ne land­scapes, offer cozy places to stop for refresh­ments in a regio­nal atmo­sphe­re, and pro­vi­de a striking glim­pse into the moun­tain cul­tu­re of Kelch­sau. From the scenic van­ta­ge points, you’ll often be trea­ted to swee­ping views exten­ding into the sur­roun­ding val­leys and peaks. 
Day 5
Kelch­sau — Lodron
Distanz: 18 km Höhe (+): 1140m Höhe (-): 0m
A scenic alpi­ne hike. The rou­te fol­lows easy to modera­te­ly dif­fi­cult trails and forest paths; the ascents are mode­ra­te and only slight­ly stee­per on short sec­tions. With an ele­va­ti­on gain of about 1,200 meters, howe­ver, you’ll need to be in reason­ab­ly good shape. Along the way, you’ll pass count­less alpi­ne pas­tu­res. The hig­hest point of the tour is the Lodron, which offers a 360-degree view stret­ching from the gla­cier-cover­ed Hohe Tau­ern to the Wil­der Kaiser—one of the best van­ta­ge points in the Kitz­bü­hel Alps. 
Day 6
Sum­mit Hike to Gams­beil or Filzenscharte
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 1100m Höhe (-): 0m
At the start of the final day of hiking, you’ll be taken by shut­tle to the end of the val­ley so you can begin your hike in a rela­xed man­ner. The day offers two beau­tiful loop hikes in the Wind­au Val­ley, which make for the per­fect con­clu­si­on to your hiking trip. The easier rou­te leads over the Fil­zen­schar­te to the Rot­wan­dalm. On a gent­le ascent, you’ll enjoy magni­fi­cent views of the Wind­au Val­ley and the sur­roun­ding moun­ta­ins befo­re retur­ning to the val­ley via a plea­sant des­cent. The more chal­len­ging rou­te takes you to the Gams­beil. Here, a stee­per ascent awaits you, but so does a magni­fi­cent view of the enti­re regi­on from the sum­mit. From the Gams­beil, you’ll enjoy an impres­si­ve pan­o­r­amic view befo­re des­cen­ding back into the val­ley via a varied trail.

Natu­re of the Tour
The hike through the three val­leys of the Kitz­bü­hel Alps is clas­si­fied as a modera­te­ly dif­fi­cult mul­ti-day tour and requi­res a good level of basic fit­ness, par­ti­cu­lar­ly due to a few lon­ger stages with signi­fi­cant ele­va­ti­on gains. The rou­tes fol­low most­ly well-mark­ed hiking trails, alpi­ne pas­tu­res, forest roads, and nar­rower moun­tain trails. The­re are no tech­ni­cal­ly chal­len­ging pas­sa­ges, clim­bing sec­tions, or high­ly expo­sed trail seg­ments; howe­ver, sure-foo­ted­ness is requi­red, espe­ci­al­ly on alpi­ne trails and during sum­mit ascents. Some ascents are stee­per in places but remain easi­ly navigab­le at all times. For sum­mit hikes such as tho­se to the Lodron or the Gams­beil, a head for heights is advan­ta­ge­ous in cer­tain wea­ther con­di­ti­ons, though no expo­sed sec­tions are to be expec­ted. The dif­fi­cul­ty level can be indi­vi­du­al­ly adjus­ted through alter­na­ti­ve rou­tes and easier variations—such as in the Kelch­sau or the Wind­au­tal. Should your stami­na wane or the wea­ther turn unfa­vorable, the­re are opti­ons to take alter­na­ti­ve rou­tes or cut the hike short at seve­ral stages, in some cases with the assis­tance of trans­fers or public trans­por­ta­ti­on. Over­all, this is a varied, easi­ly plan­ned lei­su­re­ly hike through alpi­ne sce­n­ery with mode­ra­te tech­ni­cal demands.
