Lake Constance cycle tour 3 countries tour

from 2.195,- per person

A pleasure tour for the eyes and soul Our Lake Constance cycle tour follows rural paths and leads to the highlights of a unique cultural landscape. These include the monastery of St. Gallen and the island of Reichenau, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the old town island of Lindau, Salem, Meersburg and Birnau. You will always stay in the best hotels in the region. We have meticulously planned our cycle route so that you hardly come into contact with the streams of tourists and cars that threaten to drive away the magic of the landscape from year to year. On the terranova trip, you will immerse yourself in a magical, tranquil landscape with ponds and forests where deer sometimes graze beside the road and villages whose quiet churches and farms appear untouched by the intrusions of civilization into this landscape. This is the world in which the inspiration of artists and poets flourished! All these beauties, together with the delicious wine and other culinary delights that go with them, are among the quiet pleasures that can only be experienced if you capture them with your eyes and senses!

Itinerary / Stages

0. day
Journey to Überlingen
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
From 3 p.m., your rooms will be ready at the Parkhotel St. Leonhard, situated high above Überlingen. From the terraces and many rooms of this comfortable and first-class hotel, you can look far out over Lake Constance, which seems to stretch endlessly to the east and west. Over the next few days, you will not only cycle around this vast lake district, you will also get to know a lot of the culture of this landscape. At 4 pm, your tour guides will welcome you at the hotel reception. You will then be driven to the town center of Überlingen to begin an expertly guided tour of the old imperial city. The contours of the medieval town, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries, can still be clearly seen today. Mighty gates and walls have been preserved to this day. But where else can you find a ring of moats and ramparts carved out of the surrounding rock? The soft molasse rock of the hills around Überlingen allowed the town’s master builders to create this unique construction. The heart of the old town is picturesquely grouped around the Hofstatt square with the town hall and many Gothic stepped gables. The Gothic cathedral of St. Nicholas is also nearby. It is not only impressive on the outside, but also contains precious treasures on the inside. These include the works of art by Überlingen woodcarver Jörg Zürn. He created the sacrament house and a magnificent high altar. Dinner 1st overnight stay at the Parkhotel St. Leonhard**** / Überlingen.
Day 1
Rococo and Trälatenweg
Distanz: 34 km Höhe (+): 290m Höhe (-): 350m
When you arrive from the breakfast buffet, the bikes are already lined up next to the hotel and ready for departure. The cycle route begins with an easy descent and is slightly hilly on paths away from the main road. This is followed by forest and meadow paths with wonderful views of the lake. We cycle along them right up to the gates of Birnau. This rococo church has almost become a symbol of the entire Lake Constance landscape and is one of its most visited treasures. A balustrade stretches out in front of the church, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the lake. Meersburg is one of the most romantic medieval towns on the lake. Steep alleyways are lined with beautiful old houses. They lead up to the castle. Annette von Droste-Hülshof, a poet from the Münsterland region, once lived here in Meersburg. After an individual tour and lunch break, the bikes are ready to continue to Salem, the former Cistercian monastery. It is still the residence of the Margrave of Baden and home to the world-famous boarding school. The route to Salem also takes us along field, forest and meadow paths through a seemingly untouched landscape. We cycle past tranquil ponds and see those strange hills called drumlins, which are evidence of the Ice Age. Part of our cycle route is part of the Prelates’ Trail. The monks and priests from Salem Abbey used to walk along it to Birnau to say mass. The venerable walls of Salem’s monastery complex, which today houses a renowned and internationally renowned boarding school, rise up before us. Here you can join a short guided tour (approx. 1 hour) or take a coffee break. You will then be taken back to Überlingen by terranova bus (10 km). Dinner 2nd overnight stay at the Parkhotel St. Leonhard**** / Überlingen.
Day 2
On romantic paths to Lindau
Distanz: 51 km Höhe (+): 370m Höhe (-): 400m
In the morning, we start the cycle tour in the pretty little town of Markdorf (transfer from Überlingen: 22 km). For the route to Lindau, terranova has chosen routes that lead along hidden paths. We cycle past old fruit farms, see small villages, cross small woods and pass a picturesque little lake. Then the landscape descends to Lake Constance and we ride down to Wasserburg. You can actually see the remains of a castle there: It is a crenellated wall against which the waves of Lake Constance lapped. It surrounds a beautifully situated cemetery and a church whose onion dome is one of the most photographed motifs on the lake. Wasserburg and Lindau are at the center of Lake Constance tourism, which attracts huge numbers of visitors. We cycle almost traffic-free from Wasserburg to Lindau to the gates of our hotel at Lindau harbor. The harbor entrance with its lighthouse and lions is one of the postcard motifs of Lake Constance. So that you have enough time for a stroll along the harbor promenade with a view of the Alps, this evening is at your leisure (dinner not included). Overnight stay at the Lindauer Hof **** / Lindau.
Day 3
From Lindau through Austria to Switzerland
Distanz: 32 km Höhe (+): 380m Höhe (-): 70m
Lindau is another must-see medieval town! Here, too, we will give you an expert guided tour so that you get a good overview of its history and don’t miss any of its architectural gems. Here you will find alleyways and streets lined with arcades, a magnificently painted town hall crowned with stepped gables and beautifully decorated churches. The port of Lindau is the most important in Bavaria and its entrance is flanked by a lighthouse and a huge stone lion. The cycle path from Lindau to Bregenz takes us across the German-Austrian border. Our route leads along winding paths close to the banks to the natural idyll of the Bregenzer Ache and finally to the nature reserve at Rohrspitz, which is surrounded by two branches of the Rhine. This is a world for migratory birds, herons, bitterns and numerous duck species. The Swiss are sometimes very strict about their borders and also check cyclists (very rarely, but you should still be able to identify yourself these days!) After passing through the customs station, we reach the small town of Rheineck. From here, we have to climb a considerable slope to reach the high altitude town of St. Gallen. This effort is relieved by a short train ride (for small groups in the terranova bus). From the train station in St. Gallen, it is a 10-minute walk (650 m) to our modern and very comfortable hotel, which is located near the old town and is considered to be the best in the city. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay at the Hotel Einstein**** / St. Gallen.
Day 4
St. Gallen’s monastery district and trip to Gottlieben
Distanz: 44 km Höhe (+): 230m Höhe (-): 540m
From the Middle Ages to the present day, St. Gallen has always been a rich city. The mighty centuries-old monastery with its cathedral and the world-famous Abbey Library (UNESCO World Heritage Site) form the heart of the old town, which is truly worth seeing. A knowledgeable expert guides us there with eloquence and inexhaustible expertise. Here we can also admire works by Anton Feuchtmayer! At the end of the city tour, our tour guide will take you on foot to a villa and university district on a hillside. Here on the outskirts of St. Gallen, the bikes are waiting for you again. A cycle route now takes you back down to the lakeshore, where you cycle downhill more often than uphill. We slowly approach the lakeshore, which we left the day before, on agricultural paths and small roads. Our destination for the day is Gottlieben in Switzerland. This small village with its picturesque half-timbered houses lies on the shores of Untersee. The castle of the Bishop of Constance is still there. This is where the unfortunate Czech reformer Hus was abducted to justify his reforms at the Council of Constance. For us, Gottlieben is a particularly homely place in the Lake Constance region. Our hotel is a historic, listed building. The rooms are therefore very different and somewhat smaller. We consciously accept this lack of comfort because it is one of the most romantic places on the banks of the Rhine and the lake. From the restaurant terrace, you can look out over the Wollmatinger Ried nature reserve and the island of Reichenau. On warm summer nights, you can experience unforgettable sunsets here. 1st dinner in the hotel restaurant Overnight stay at Hotel Porto Sofie*** / Gottlieben.
Day 5
From Reichenau to Stein am Rhein
Distanz: 48 km Höhe (+): 230m Höhe (-): 140m
Today, after Lindau, you will get to know another island on Lake Constance. Reichenau is famous for the fine vegetables that grow there and for several of Germany’s most venerable Romanesque churches. We cross over there by boat from Gottlieben. On Reichenau, we will show you one of the three Romanesque churches (and cycle past the other two). The Alemannic abbot Walahfrid once lived in the Reichenau monastery. He was not only an important churchman, but also an outstanding scholar. The German emperor entrusted him with the education of his son. This also explains why an emperor is buried in the cathedral church. Walahfrid was a gifted gardener. He created the famous herb garden that can still be visited today. The scholar left a description of this garden in Latin hexameters — another cultural asset that has survived to this day. We cycle — always close to the shore — around the island and reach the German side of the lower lake via a dam lined with poplars. After Allensbach and Radolfzell, our cycle path finally leads us away from Lake Constance and over an (invisible) green border back into Switzerland. Shortly before the end of today’s stage in Stein am Rhein, you reach the Rhine and cycle back to the lake. Stein am Rhein is a truly picturesque little town. Its charming half-timbered houses look like a picture gallery, the facades are so lavishly painted with frescoes. We return from Stein am Rhein by train (smaller groups can travel by terranova bus). Final dinner in the hotel restaurant Overnight stay at the Hotel Porto Sofie*** / Gottlieben.
Day 6
Council city of Constance and departure
Distanz: 22 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
The round trip around the lake concludes with today’s cycle route: we get on our bikes in front of the hotel to cycle along the Seerhein back to Germany near Constance. A beautiful cycle path crosses the city of the Council. The famous Council, one of the most important of the Middle Ages, was held here from 1414 to 1418. Your tour guide will give you a brief introduction to this interesting history. You will then have time to stroll through the historic town center or enjoy a coffee on the market square or at the harbour before cycling through the elegant villa district out of Constance to the southern shore of Lake Überlingen. You follow a quiet and picturesque cycle path that takes you to the village of Wallhausen, from whose small harbor we take a ferry to Überlingen. Your cycle tour around Lake Constance ends in Überlingen. According to the long-standing timetable, the ship docks in Überlingen daily at 13:35. Therefore, please do not book a train that departs earlier than 2 pm! From the harbour in Überlingen, your tour guides will drive everyone who has parked their car at the Parkhotel St. Leonhard up to the parking lot. Of course, you can also be taken to the train station on request.
