Our tip — the­re is so much to see to the right and left that you should­n’t miss out on! The start­ing point of the Lake Con­s­tance-Königs­see cycle rou­te bet­ween the lakes is Lin­dau, from here you head into the hil­ly All­gäu regi­on. After an unfor­gettable view of the All­gäu Alps, the Zug­spit­ze and the Tann­heim moun­ta­ins, you reach Hohen­schwan­gau and see what is pro­ba­b­ly Ger­many’s most famous post­card motif: Neu­schwan­stein Cast­le, built by King Lud­wig II. The Wies­kir­che church is also worth a visit. It is loca­ted a litt­le off the rou­te near Stein­ga­den and is a UNESCO World Heri­ta­ge Site. In Bene­dikt­beu­ern, the Bene­dic­ti­ne monas­tery with over 1,250 years of histo­ry is well worth a visit. The cycle rou­te rea­ches Bad Tölz on the Isar and leads through the Upper Bava­ri­an pic­tu­re-book land­scape to Tegern­see, Schlier­see and final­ly to Chiem­see, for which you should plan some time. The boat takes you to the Frau­en­in­sel and after a round trip you cross over to the Her­ren­in­sel, whe­re ano­ther magni­fi­cent cast­le from the time of King Lud­wig II awaits you. The rou­te leads via Traun­stein to Bad Rei­chen­hall and Berch­tes­ga­den. The desti­na­ti­on of the trip lies in the midd­le of the alpi­ne land­scape of the Berch­tes­ga­den Natio­nal Park. The Königs­see is a tru­ly crow­ning fina­le to a roy­al bike tour.

Arri­val Lindau

You tra­vel by train or by car to our start­ing hotel in Lin­dau. You should arri­ve in such a way that you can explo­re Lin­dau ‑in- Lake Con­s­tance- on a short tour. ‑In Lake Con­s­tance becau­se Lin­dau’s his­to­ric old town is loca­ted on an island in the lake. Also worth see­ing are the Old Town Hall and, of cour­se, the har­bor whe­re the Lake Con­s­tance fleet arri­ves and departs. Then first over­night stay in Lindau
Lin­dau — Stiefenhofen/Oberstaufen
Distanz: 53 km Höhe (+): 640m Höhe (-): 230m
After a hear­ty break­fast, you will cover an alti­tu­de dif­fe­rence of around 400 meters from the Lake Con­s­tance basin up to Stie­fen­ho­fen, a very small, authen­tic com­mu­ni­ty near Ober­stau­fen. You will also pass through Her­gens­wei­ler with its 11th cen­tu­ry Mol­ten­berg Cast­le. A spe­cial tip for the lei­su­re­ly uphill cyclists: take the Pfän­der­bahn from Bre­genz to the moun­tain sta­ti­on (1064 m). From 8.00 — 10.00 a.m., bicy­cles are free of char­ge, other­wi­se 7.00 euros (as of 01/22). From the moun­tain sta­ti­on, the rou­te leads to Hin­ter­egg, Lut­zen­reu­te, Mög­gers, Scheid­egg (800 m) and Lin­den­berg. From Röthen­bach, con­ti­nue on the mark­ed Boden­see-Königs­see cycle path. 
Stiefenhofen/Oberstaufen — Nesselwang
Distanz: 62 km Höhe (+): 560m Höhe (-): 500m
After a tour of the beau­tiful spa town of Ober­stau­fen or a visit to the local muse­um of local histo­ry, today you cycle around the Stauf­ner Berg, cross the val­ley of the Kon­stan­zer Ach and reach the Gro­ßer Alp­see, a won­derful place to take a short brea­ther. The Gre­at Alp­see not only has a lot to offer in terms of sce­n­ery, it is also a true Mec­ca of fun for sur­fing and sai­ling enthu­si­asts. Your rou­te con­ti­nues past the Klei­ner Alp­see lake, across the Iller river to tran­quil Immenstadt. With its his­to­ric cast­le ruins all around, the town is par­ti­cu­lar­ly invi­ting for an addi­tio­nal explo­ra­ti­on tour. With enough tail­wind, you first make a detour to Sont­ho­fen befo­re con­ti­nuing via Ret­ten­berg and the beau­tiful Rott­ach­see. The last sec­tion of today’s stage leads via Oy-Mit­tel­berg to Nes­sel­wang, situa­ted at the foot of the Edels­berg and the Alp­spit­ze. For beer lovers, the­re is a bre­wery muse­um in Nes­sel­wang, which com­me­mo­ra­tes the num­e­rous bre­we­ries in the town from ear­lier times.
Nes­sel­wang — Bad Kohlgrub
Distanz: 66 km Höhe (+): 680m Höhe (-): 690m
From Nes­sel­wang, you are accom­pa­nied by the fan­ta­stic pan­ora­ma of the All­gäu Alps. With views of the Zug­spit­ze and the Tann­heim moun­ta­ins, through green forests, you pass quiet litt­le vil­la­ges such as Schwei­negg and Zell until you reach the spa town of Hop­fen am See. From Hop­fen am Hop­fen­see, you con­ti­nue to Füs­sen am Forg­gen­see, the second lar­gest town in the Ost­all­gäu. With its his­to­ric old town and inte­res­t­ing muse­ums and buil­dings, Füs­sen is well worth a visit. Today’s sec­tion of the rou­te also takes you to Schwan­gau and thus clo­se to the world-famous fairy­ta­le cast­les of the Bava­ri­an King Lud­wig II. Neu­schwan­stein Cast­le is the most famous of the­se, was built in 1869 and is defi­ni­te­ly worth a visit. The rou­te then con­ti­nues past the Bann­wald­see lake in the direc­tion of Bad Kohlgrub.
Bad Kohl­grub — Kochel
Distanz: 37 km Höhe (+): 170m Höhe (-): 430m
Con­ti­nue along coun­try lanes and small side roads up into the forest of the spar­se­ly popu­la­ted Ammer­gau moun­ta­ins and along the old roy­al road bet­ween Schneid­berg and Nie­der­bleich to reach the Halb­am­mer val­ley. From the­re you ride down to Alten­au. The rou­te from Alten­au and Saul­grub to Bad Kohl­grub impres­ses with its varied land­scape. Past the quaint Alten­au­er Moor, a natu­re reser­ve, the rou­te con­ti­nues along lush green mea­dows and tra­di­tio­nal vil­la­ges, with the impo­sing moun­tain pan­ora­ma stret­ching out in the back­ground. From the Bad Kohl­grub moor spa, the rou­te con­ti­nues downhill to Gra­fen­aschau, at the foot of the Aschau moun­ta­ins, to ano­ther natu­re reser­ve, the Mur­nau­er and Eschen­lo­her Moos. The cour­se of the Loi­sach river takes you to Eschen­lo­he. Cycle along the Loi­sach to Ohl­stadt, past the Schwai­gan­ger sta­te stud farm to Groß­weil. The Upper Bava­ri­an open-air muse­um Glent­lei­ten (km 13) is loca­ted on a hill and you should defi­ni­te­ly pay it a visit. The rou­te con­ti­nues to Schleh­dorf and Kochel­see. In Kochel you are gree­ted by the monu­ment to the free­dom figh­ter Schmied von Kochel. The Franz Marc Muse­um, which exhi­bits objects and pain­tings by the expres­sio­nist The Blue Rider from the ear­ly 20th cen­tu­ry, is well worth a visit 
Kochel — Tegern­see region
Distanz: 48 km Höhe (+): 510m Höhe (-): 360m
From Kochel you con­ti­nue through the Töl­zer Land regi­on to Bene­dikt­beu­ern with its basi­li­ca, which dates back to the year 739 and now pres­ents its­elf in the most beau­tiful baro­que and roco­co style. The next desti­na­ti­ons are Bad Heil­brunn and Bad Tölz. The anci­ent town of Bad Tölz alre­a­dy bene­fi­ted from its ide­al loca­ti­on on the Isar in the past. At that time, it was used by raft­smen for trans­por­ta­ti­on and today it is a tou­rist attrac­tion. The town beca­me a health resort in 1899 and has been known as Bad Tölz ever sin­ce. Not only the old town is worth see­ing, but also the Mari­en­stift and the St. Leon­hard cha­pel on the Kal­va­ri­en­berg with a won­derful view of the Isar moun­ta­ins. You lea­ve Bad Tölz in a sou­t­her­ly direc­tion to Gaiß­ach sta­ti­on and tra­vel via Rei­chers­beu­ern and Waa­kir­chen to Mari­en­st­ein and Gmund am Tegern­see. If you are still in good shape, we also recom­mend a walk around the lake, alt­hough you should walk around it in a clock­wi­se direc­tion due to the hea­vy traffic.
Tegern­see regi­on — Rosen­heim region
Distanz: 61 km Höhe (+): 510m Höhe (-): 820m
From Tegern­see you head to Schlier­see, Fisch­bach­au, Son­nen­reuth and Niklas­reuth, fol­lo­wed by Bad Feiln­bach, a pret­ty vil­la­ge at the foot of the Wen­del­stein. Bad Feiln­bach is bles­sed with a fair­ly mild cli­ma­te and is a popu­lar health resort. The cli­ma­te also has a posi­ti­ve effect on the apple har­ve­st, which is why the apple mar­ket in the fall is one of the high­lights of the cul­tu­ral land­scape. From Bad Feiln­bach, you fol­low the cycle path slight­ly downhill and then reach your desti­na­ti­on for today’s stage near Rosenheim. 
Rosen­heim regi­on — Marquartstein
Distanz: 50 km Höhe (+): 330m Höhe (-): 240m
From Rosen­heim, the day beg­ins in the direc­tion of Ber­nau and then con­ti­nues via Gras­sau on an old salt works path to Ber­gen, at the foot of the Hoch­felln. A high­light worth see­ing here is the Max­hüt­te, an old iron­works that has been con­ver­ted into a muse­um. The fol­lo­wing vil­la­ge of Siegs­dorf may be a rela­tively small com­mu­ni­ty, but it still has a spe­cial geo­lo­gi­cal sen­sa­ti­on to offer. Siegs­dorf made the big­gest head­lines in 1985 with the announce­ment of the dis­co­very of a mam­mo­th, which is now on dis­play in the South-East Bava­ri­an Muse­um of Natu­ral Histo­ry and Mammoths. 
Mar­quart­stein — Bad Reichenhall
Distanz: 63 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 560m
After a hear­ty break­fast, the tour leads along the Sali­nen­weg to Lau­ter, Ober­tei­sen­dorf and Tei­sen­dorf. Tei­sen­dorf is loca­ted in the Ruper­ti­win­kel, belon­ged to the prin­ce-arch­bi­shop­ric of Salz­burg for many years and is said to have been sett­led in Roman times. The rou­te con­ti­nues to Piding on the Saal­ach. From Piding, you cycle along the Alz cycle path to Bad Rei­chen­hall, the town of the for­mer salt (Hall) mer­chants. The salt muse­um in the old salt works pro­vi­des an insight into his­to­ri­cal and modern salt pro­duc­tion. The town beca­me a health resort in 1890. In addi­ti­on to the muse­um, St. Zen­o’s Mins­ter from the 12th cen­tu­ry is also worth a visit. This church is the lar­gest Roma­nes­que hall church in Bavaria. 
Bad Rei­chen­hall — Berch­tes­ga­den — Königs­see — Berchtesgaden
Distanz: 24 km Höhe (+): 340m Höhe (-): 200m
Today, on the last day of your Boden­see Königs­see cycle tour, you will take a trip to Königs­see in Berch­tes­ga­den Natio­nal Park. Berch­tes­ga­den owes its ori­g­ins to an Augus­ti­ni­an canon monas­tery foun­ded in 1100 and was the smal­lest prin­ci­pa­li­ty in Ger­ma­ny in the 15th cen­tu­ry. The final desti­na­ti­on, Königs­see, is nest­led bet­ween two steep moun­tain slo­pes and is the­r­e­fo­re often com­pared to a Scan­di­na­vi­an fjord and is also one of the clea­nest lakes in Ger­ma­ny. If the wea­ther is bad, we recom­mend a visit to the Berch­tes­ga­den salt mine (roman­tic ride on the mine train), which you can reach by public trans­port from Bad Rei­chen­hall. You can reach your accom­mo­da­ti­on in Berch­tes­ga­den from the salt mine on foot or by public transport.

Stro­ke of luck
We boo­ked the cycle tour from König­see to Lake Con­s­tance, were very lucky with the wea­ther and enjoy­ed cycling through this beau­tiful land­scape every day. The trans­fer from Lin­dau to Berch­tes­ga­den on the first day work­ed very well. We cele­bra­ted the end of the cycle tour with a love­ly evening in Lin­dau. The next mor­ning, all we had to do was load our bikes and suit­ca­ses into the cars to start our jour­ney home. The accom­mo­da­ti­on was all fine and cer­tain­ly sui­ta­ble for just one night. We can only high­ly recom­mend this cycle tour.

Beau­tiful!
The nine days of cycling in the foot­hills of the Alps were a gre­at natu­re expe­ri­ence — fra­grant mea­dows, thou­sands of cows, one lake after ano­ther — pure idyll! The hotels were also con­sis­t­ent­ly good and the lug­ga­ge trans­fer went smooth­ly. I’m alre­a­dy loo­king for­ward to the next trip with Feu­er und Eis!
