The Ammer­gau Alps medi­ta­ti­on trail invi­tes you on a pil­grimage to yours­elf. The rou­te takes you through the love­ly Ammer­tal val­ley in the beau­tiful south of Bava­ria. You can expect 15 varied sta­ti­ons, ran­ging from world-famous buil­dings and secluded cha­pels to uni­que natu­ral monu­ments. Immer­se yours­elf in histo­ry and dis­co­ver the roots of the­se places. In the regu­la­ri­ty of wal­king, you will find inner peace on the medi­ta­ti­on trail, switch off from ever­y­day life and just be yourself. 

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Indi­vi­du­al arri­val in Bad Bayersoien

Wel­co­me to your journey.
Day 2
From the Wies­kir­che to Bad Bayersoien
Distanz: 22 km Höhe (+): 340m Höhe (-): 410m
Trans­fer to the Wies­kir­che in the mor­ning. You start your pil­grimage with a visit to the famous roco­co church, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heri­ta­ge Site. After the visit, you will hike through hil­ly coun­try­si­de to Wild­steig. From here, the trail con­ti­nues past the Rot­ten­buch monas­tery to Bad Bay­er­soi­en. If you wish, you can take a medi­ta­ti­ve walk around the Soier See lake. 
Day 3
Through the Ammer gor­ge to Bad Kohlgrub
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 290m Höhe (-): 260m
Start the day with a mor­ning reflec­tion in the parish church of St. Georg. Your hike then takes you down to the Ammer gor­ge. Along the Ammer­lei­te you reach the next high­light of your jour­ney, the impres­si­ve Ammer breakth­rough at Schei­bum. You then con­ti­nue via Ache­le­schwaig and Saul­grub to Bad Kohlgrub. 
Day 4
To the Pas­si­on Play venue Oberammergau
Distanz: 23 km Höhe (+): 910m Höhe (-): 900m
Your hike today takes you along the Wies­mahd­weg to the Kap­pel­kir­che church in Unter­am­mer­gau. After a visit, you con­ti­nue your hike over the Hörn­le to Ober­am­mer­gau. Here you can mar­vel at the thea­ter of the world-famous Pas­si­on Play. You can also shor­ten the rou­te with the Hörn­le sus­pen­si­on rail­road and then just hike downhill to Ober­am­mer­gau on a roo­ty path. Alter­na­tively, you can skip the Hörn­le altog­e­ther and hike down the val­ley to Oberammergau. 
Day 5
Via the grot­to path to the Bene­dic­ti­ne monastery
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 200m Höhe (-): 160m
After break­fast, visit the parish church in Ober­am­mer­gau for a con­tem­pla­ti­ve intro­duc­tion. Walk up to the cru­ci­fi­xi­on group and then past the Mari­en­grot­te to the Cel­tic shri­ne of Döt­ten­bichl. On the Vogel­herd­weg trail, you will later reach the Bene­dic­ti­ne monas­tery of Ettal, who­se baro­que basi­li­ca invi­tes you to take a tour. Depen­ding on avai­la­bi­li­ty, you can eit­her stay over­night direct­ly in Ettal or take the bus to your accom­mo­da­ti­on in Oberammergau. 
Day 6
To Lin­der­hof Castle
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 190m Höhe (-): 120m
If you have spent the night in Ober­am­mer­gau, take the bus back to Ettal. You lea­ve the monas­tery vil­la­ge and hike past the Ettal mill into the Weid­moos natu­re reser­ve. Attrac­ted by the magni­fi­cent view of the Ammer­gau Alps, you con­ti­nue along the path to the Ammer springs. In the after­noon, you gra­du­al­ly approach the desti­na­ti­on of your hike, the park of Lin­der­hof Cast­le, on the Kohl­bach­weg. If you book in advan­ce, you can take part in a gui­ded tour of King Lud­wig II’s world-famous hun­ting lodge. The public bus will take you back to Ettal, if you are stay­ing over­night in Ober­am­mer­gau, you can return there.

From Ettal or Ober­am­mer­gau you can take the public bus line 9606 back to Bad Bay­er­soi­en. Dura­ti­on: approx. 45 minutes 
Get­ting There
Public trans­port: To Mur­nau, Ober­au or Saul­grub sta­ti­on and by bus or cab to Bad Bay­er­soi­en. BY CAR: FROM MUNICH: From Munich, take the A95 towards Gar­misch-Par­ten­kir­chen. Take exit 9‑Sindelsdorf and fol­low the B472. You will pass Mur­nau am Staf­fel­see. Con­ti­nue to Bad Kohlgrub/Saulgrub. From here con­ti­nue in the direc­tion of Augs­burg and after approx. 20 minu­tes you will reach your desti­na­ti­on FROM FÜSSEN: Fol­low the B17 in the direc­tion of Stein­ga­den. In Stein­ga­den, turn right into Ammer­gau­er Str. in the direc­tion of Rot­ten­buch. Fol­low the road until you reach a traf­fic cir­cle, whe­re you take the first exit (B23). After approx. 2.5 km fol­low the Dorf­stra­ße to the left. You have rea­ched your desti­na­ti­on. FROM INNSBRUCK: Start in the direc­tion of Gar­misch-Par­ten­kir­chen via the B177, past Mit­ten­wald and Gar­misch-Par­ten­kir­chen, fol­low the B2 to Etta­ler Str./B23 in Ober­au. In Ober­au turn left towards Augs­burg. After you have pas­sed the Etta­ler Berg, you will reach Ettal — the sou­thern gate­way to the Ammer­gau Alps. After approx. 25 km you will reach your destination.
Natu­re of the Tour
Modera­te­ly dif­fi­cult hike. For hikes las­ting up to 8 hours, you should be in reason­ab­ly good phy­si­cal con­di­ti­on. Other­wi­se, you’ll be hiking most­ly on easy, well-main­tai­ned trails wit­hout any major incli­nes (except for the Bad Kohlgrub–Oberammergau leg). The trails are most­ly paved or forest trails.

Free, unguard­ed par­king spaces available: Traht­weg, sports field, Köchelstraße.

To ensu­re a stress-free start to your trip, we gene­ral­ly recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening. Some tours begin as ear­ly as noon; in tho­se cases, we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re. We’d be hap­py to book an extra night for you right away. Your indi­vi­du­al return trip takes place on the last day of the trip. The distances lis­ted are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al distances tra­ve­led.
