Itinerary / Stages

Indi­vi­du­al arri­val in Martigny
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
The small town of Mar­tigny is idyl­li­cal­ly situa­ted in the Rhô­ne val­ley. Stroll up to La Batiaz Cast­le or for­ti­fy yours­elf for the days ahead in one of the many restaurants. 
Mar­tigny — Argentière
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 900m Höhe (-): 900m
Ear­ly mor­ning bus ride or trans­fer to Tren­to. You start your first day of hiking with an ascent to the Col de Bal­me pass (2191 m), whe­re you can rest in a rustic moun­tai­nee­ring hut. Here you have fan­ta­stic views of Mont Blanc and the Cha­mo­nix val­ley! A des­cent takes you down to a gras­sy sadd­le with gra­zing catt­le and a cozy moun­tain hut. An impres­si­ve ridge path over the sum­mit of the Aigu­iel­le­te de Pos­se­tes now leads you through rocky ter­rain with a tre­men­dous pan­ora­ma of the sur­roun­ding gla­ciers. The des­cent is mas­te­red on a steep hiking trail, which later leads along the moun­tain stream to the finish. A fan­ta­stic day amidst the hig­hest moun­tain giants! 
Argen­tiè­re — Chamonix
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 1050m Höhe (-): 350m
The most spec­ta­cu­lar part of the Mont Blanc cir­cuit awaits you today: you climb steep rocks on well-secu­red lad­ders and ascend to the bright blue moun­tain lake Lac Blanc. In the after­noon, the rou­te takes you over the Grand Bal­con, a gre­at high-alti­tu­de trail along the moun­ta­in­si­de and through blueber­ry fields to Plan Praz with its café at 2000m! Here you take the cable car and float down to the legen­da­ry moun­tai­nee­ring town of Cha­mo­nix. Take a stroll through the magni­fi­cent pede­stri­an zone with its colorful­ly deco­ra­ted hou­ses! You can choo­se to make this stage a litt­le easier and skip the adven­tur­ous clim­bing sections. 
Cha­mo­nix — Les Houches
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 550m Höhe (-): 1570m
Today, the cable car takes you effort­less­ly up to 2000m. Now it’s not far to the Col du Bré­vent pass (2368m), from whe­re you climb over impres­si­ve bould­ers to the Bré­vent vie­w­ing sum­mit. From the pan­o­r­amic plat­form, known as the best van­ta­ge point on Mont Blanc, you can admi­re the gla­ciers and firn peaks of the ice giants. Past the bizar­re­ly shaped moun­tain lake Lac du Bré­vent, a beau­tiful hiking trail leads down to the Bel-Lachat refu­ge. You can rest the­re befo­re con­ti­nuing the steep des­cent, which takes you past the Mer­let Alpi­ne Wild­life Park through the forest into the val­ley. Today you will spend the night in the val­ley of the Arve river, which is fed by gla­cial waters, in one of the many small vil­la­ges in the muni­ci­pa­li­ty of Les Houches. 
Les Hou­ch­es — Les Contamines 
Distanz: 10 km Höhe (+): 550m Höhe (-): 1290m
Get up clo­se and per­so­nal with the famous Mont Blanc tram­way today and walk along the tracks for a while! From Bel­le­vue, you can see the impo­sing ter­mi­nus of the bold­ly built cog rail­road next to the ice field. An inte­res­t­ing high-level trail leads you to an adven­tur­ous sus­pen­si­on bridge on which you cross the rus­hing gla­cial stream! Con­ti­nue across moun­tain mea­dows to the Col de Tri­cot pass (2120m) and down to the Mia­ge huts. After ano­ther climb, you reach the cozy rest stop at the Truc-Alpe. Stop off and lis­ten to the bells of the gra­zing cows. Your desti­na­ti­on of Les Con­ta­mi­nes lies in the Mont­joie val­ley, famous for the deli­cious chee­ses from the num­e­rous sur­roun­ding moun­tain pas­tu­res. Visit one of the cheese dairy stores and sam­ple Savoy­ard cheese with red wine and fresh baguette. 
Les Con­ta­mi­nes — Les Cha­pieux — Bourg Saint-Maurice
Distanz: 18 km Höhe (+): 1385m Höhe (-): 960m
The last stage will make moun­tai­neers’ hearts beat fas­ter: you hike in the foot­s­teps of the Romans over gurg­ling gor­ges, encoun­ter dif­fe­rent types of rock, have deep views of gla­cial lakes and climb two high pass crossings! You pass the sou­thern­most point of the Mont Blanc mas­sif, whe­re you can enjoy end­less views of the sou­thern mas­sifs of the French Alps. First you take a lei­su­re­ly hike along the river to the baro­que pil­grimage church of Not­re Dame de la Gor­ge, from whe­re you begin the long ascent to the pass sum­mits. From the Col du Bon­hom­me (2329m), con­ti­nue along a rocky moun­tain path to the Col de la Croix du Bon­hom­me pass (2450m). Rech­ar­ge your bat­te­ries at the Refu­ge de la Croix du Bon­hom­me, a tra­di­tio­nal refu­ge run by the French Alpi­ne Club. A final des­cent across alpi­ne mea­dows crossed by moun­tain streams takes you into the Val­lée des Gla­ciers (Val­ley of the Gla­ciers), whe­re you can toast your suc­cessful hiking week in the small ham­let of Les Cha­pieux! A short trans­fer takes you down to the over­night resort of Bourg-Saint-Mau­rice. Enjoy a rela­xing final evening and reflect on your hiking week over a glass of wine!

Tour cha­rac­ter
You need to be in very good phy­si­cal con­di­ti­on for the long stages. The­re are some expo­sed sec­tions, and you need to be sure-foo­ted and have a head for heights! 
Arri­val
From Zurich in 2.5 — 3 hours via Visp. Direct trains from Gen­e­va, approx. 1.5 hours. 
Return jour­ney
The return jour­ney to Mar­tigny is incon­ve­ni­ent. Rail jour­ney via Cham­be­ry, Anne­cy and Vallor­ci­ne to Mar­tigny in 8 hours. Alter­na­tively, an orga­ni­zed return trans­fer can be booked.

To ensu­re a stress-free start to the trip, we recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening in most cases. Some tours start as ear­ly as mid­day, in which case we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re and will be hap­py to book an extra night for you at the same time. The indi­vi­du­al return jour­ney takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilo­me­ters are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al kilo­me­ters cover­ed.
