On the pul­se of the Alps from Lake Tegern­see to the Three Peaks

This long but rewar­ding crossing of the Alps will inspi­re you for almost two weeks with an incre­di­ble expe­ri­ence of natu­re, chan­ging land­scapes and a dream­li­ke jour­ney through three count­ries with their places worth see­ing. The first sec­tion of the crossing of the Alps takes you from the enchan­ting Tegern­see past glit­te­ring lakes to the pret­ty town of Kuf­stein. The rou­te con­ti­nues along the Wil­der Kai­ser to Ell­mau (Berg­dok­tor) and on to fashionable Kitz­bü­hel. Part two starts the­re and leads over the Fel­ber­tau­ern to East Tyrol, over the Gsie­ser Törl and final­ly to the impo­sing Dolo­mi­te cliffs of the Three Peaks.

Indi­vi­du­al arri­val at the Tegernsee
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Arri­ve in one of the most beau­tiful cor­ners of Bava­ria and immer­se yours­elf in the myth of Lake Tegern­see. The magic will take hold of you. 
Tegern­see — Schliersee
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 610m Höhe (-): 490m
You start the tour at the train sta­ti­on in the vil­la­ge of Tegern­see and climb up to the well-known Neu­reuth Hüt­te. An even more beau­tiful vari­ant of the famous Prin­zen­weg leads you via Gin­del­alm and the Auer Berg to the Huber­spitz­haus. From here, you head back down the val­ley to Schliersee. 
Schlier­see — Wen­del­stein — Bayrischzell
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 1040m Höhe (-): 60m
From pic­tures­que Schlier­see, take the bus or train to Aurach. From here you hike to Fisch­bach­au, past the famous place of pil­grimage — Bir­ken­stein. From the­re, the path winds its way across pic­tures­que alpi­ne pas­tu­res up to the sum­mit. The sum­mit with its fan­ta­stic all-round view gives you a glim­pse deep into the Alps. Take the cable car back down to the val­ley and your desti­na­ti­on of Bay­risch­zell. Alter­na­ti­ve: Aschau — Bay­risch­zell (approx. 3 h / approx. 10.8 km / uphill 191 m / downhill 166 m) Short bus ride to Aschau, from here you hike to Bir­ken­stein and along the foot of the Wen­del­stein to Bay­risch­zell. Ascent to the sum­mit pos­si­ble with the Wen­del­stein cable car (ticket not included). 
Bay­risch­zell — Thiersee
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 840m Höhe (-): 1060m
Short trans­fer from Bay­risch­zell to the start­ing point. From here you hike over the Nes­sel­berg to the bor­der bet­ween Bava­ria and Austria/Tyrol. Con­ti­nue to the Mari­andlalm befo­re you hike lei­su­re­ly to Thier­see via the Trai­sen­alm with a con­stant view of the Wil­der Kai­ser. From the­re, take the public bus to Hin­tert­hier­see and your hotel. 
Thier­see — Kufstein
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 310m Höhe (-): 450m
Today’s stage takes you via Thier­see, Läng­see and Hecht­see to the pearl of the Inn, Kuf­stein. Here, it is defi­ni­te­ly worth visi­ting the fort­ress and the worl­d’s lar­gest open-air organ. 
Kuf­stein — Ellmau
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 460m Höhe (-): 760m
From Kuf­stein with the Kai­ser­lift to the Bren­ten­joch. On the trail of the Adler­weg to the Kaindl­hüt­te and on via the Wal­ler­alm along the side of the Wil­der Kai­ser to the home of the moun­tain doc­tor in Ell­mau. Free hiking bus from Hin­ter­stei­ner­see to Schef­f­au and on to Ellmau. 
Ell­mau — Kitzbühel
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 650m Höhe (-): 700m
You set off over the local moun­tain to Reith near Kitz­bü­hel. It soon beco­mes clear why high socie­ty has found its second home here. You reach the legen­da­ry cha­mois and sports town of Kitz­bü­hel via the Gier­in­ger Wei­her and Schwarz­see lakes. 
Kitz­bü­hel — Mittersill
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 820m Höhe (-): 800m
A shut­tle takes you to the start­ing point. Hike across lush alpi­ne pas­tu­res below the val­ley heights, fur­ther and fur­ther up into the beau­tiful moun­tain world. Enjoy the peace and quiet and the flo­ra and fau­na. Via the Gau­x­joch you reach the Trat­ten­bachalm and the Hart­kaser­hö­he. The bor­der bet­ween the two fede­ral sta­tes of Tyrol and Salz­burg runs along the moun­tain top. Des­cent to the val­ley to Mit­ter­sill. Lei­su­re­ly opti­on: If you want to avo­id the des­cent from the Res­terhö­he, you can take the Pan­ora­m­abahn Kitz­bü­he­ler Alpen II to shor­ten the ascent by a few meters (not included in the pri­ce). A bus will take you to Mittersill. 
Mit­ter­sill — Tau­ern­haus — Vene­di­ger­blick — Matrei
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 650m Höhe (-): 650m
In the mor­ning the­re is a trans­fer from Mit­ter­sill to the Matrei­er Tau­ern­haus. If you wish, you can also make the crossing from Hin­ter­see to St. Pöl­te­ner Hüt­te and Matrei­er Tau­ern­haus. At first, the trail leads ste­adi­ly uphill through mea­dows and larch forests to the Vene­di­ger­blick. Once you reach the hig­hest point, you can enjoy a won­derful view of the gla­cier world of the Groß­ve­ne­di­ger. Via a well-sign­pos­ted hiking trail, with the Groß­ve­ne­di­ger and the sur­roun­ding moun­ta­ins always in view, you hike towards Innerg­schlöss and back to the Matrei­er Tau­ern­haus via the beau­tiful alpi­ne pas­tu­res. From the­re you can reach Matrei by public transport. 
Matrei — Maria­hilf — Gsie­ser Törl — Gsiesertal
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 780m Höhe (-): 740m
After a bus ride to Maria­hilf, you start today’s hike. The shady forest paths take you hig­her and hig­her up to the first moun­tain pas­tu­res and the Gsie­ser Törl, which is the sub­ject of many old smugg­ling sto­ries. The view sweeps across the val­ley to the Brai­es Dolo­mi­tes. On your way into the tran­quil Casies Val­ley, the Ober­bergalm, Kra­dor­fer­alm, Mess­ner­hüt­te and many more invi­te you to enjoy tra­di­tio­nal delicacies. 
Casies Val­ley — Frond­eign — Wah­len — Dobbiaco
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 470m Höhe (-): 440m
The tour leads fur­ther and fur­ther south and the Dolo­mi­tes are just a stone’s throw away. From Val­le di Casies/Gsiesertal, the rou­te clim­bs ste­adi­ly uphill to the Frond­eign pass. Most of the hike is through shady wood­land. If you pre­fer, you can choo­se the slight­ly more ath­le­tic opti­on towards the Schu­ier­alm. The path winds its way down to Wah­len. The val­ley widens and offers views of the Neu­ner­ko­fel, Haunold, Dür­ren­stein and the Höh­len­stein valley. 
Dob­bia­co — view of the Three Peaks — Val Fiscalina
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 950m Höhe (-): 960m
In the mor­ning, take the public bus to the Drei­zin­nen­blick. From the Drei­zin­nen­blick you hike over the Rienz­bö­den and through the Rienz Val­ley up to the Three Peaks, the land­mark of the Dolo­mi­tes. The Three Peaks are a UNESCO World Heri­ta­ge Site. You con­ti­nue to the famous Drei­zin­nen­hüt­te hut. From the­re, the rou­te takes you below the Patern­ko­fel, which was fought over during the First World War (the legen­da­ry moun­tain gui­de Sepp Inner­kof­ler lost his life here), into the Fisch­lein­tal val­ley. From Val Fis­ca­li­na you take the bus to Dob­bia­co. As an alter­na­ti­ve, you can hike from the Drei­zin­nen­blick up to the Three Peaks and the Rifu­gio Auron­zo and from the­re take the bus to Dob­bia­co (ticket for the Drei­zin­nen shut­tle not included).

BY CAR: FROM THE NORTH: Take the A8 Munich-Salz­burg high­way to the Holz­kir­chen exit and then the B318/B307 to Tegern­see. FROM THE SOUTH: Eit­her via the Inn Val­ley, the Achen Pass and the B307 or the Inn Val­ley high­way, the A8 Munich-Salz­burg high­way, to the Irschen­berg exit. Con­ti­nue via the B472 and B318 to Tegern­see. FLIGHT: Munich — Salz­burg — Inns­bruck TRAIN: From Munich main sta­ti­on, take the BRB to Gmund or Tegern­see, bus or cab to the hotel.
Tour cha­rac­ter
The tour is gene­ral­ly of mode­ra­te dif­fi­cul­ty and runs along mark­ed moun­tain and hiking trails. Howe­ver, you should defi­ni­te­ly bear in mind that you will be hiking long distances every day for almost two weeks. For this reason, you should have a good basic level of fit­ness. The­re are no clim­bing sec­tions. A head for heights and sure-foo­ted­ness are neces­sa­ry. Stages can often be shor­ten­ed by public trans­port or cab. 
Other notes
To ensu­re a stress-free start to the trip, we recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening in most cases. Some tours start as ear­ly as mid­day, in which case we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re and will be hap­py to book an extra night for you at the same time. The indi­vi­du­al return jour­ney takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilo­me­ters are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al kilo­me­ters cover­ed. This tour is not sui­ta­ble for peo­p­le with redu­ced mobility.
