Piedmont The Langhe — more than just wine, truffles and cheese

from 1.485,- per person

This trip takes you to the home of gourmets — in addition to varied hikes through picturesque hilly landscapes, many culinary moments await you here. Famous wines such as Barolo, Barbaresco and the Italian champagne from Canelli are on the program, as is a truffle hunt. The Langhe as a cultural landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The accommodation is also something special: the rural Hotel Casa Nicolini is located just outside the historic village of Barbaresco with a fantastic panoramic view, where tradition and modernity are naturally combined and you can sample delicious Piedmontese cuisine accompanied by fine local wines.

Saturday: Benvenuti in Barbaresco
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Arrival in the afternoon at Hotel Casa Nicolini in Barbaresco. In the evening we meet Fabrizio, our charming hiking guide, who will introduce us to the culture and nature of his chosen home region with great expertise over the next few days. Welcome aperitif together to get to know each other. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 2
Sunday: The cathedrals of wine and Italy’s champagne in Canelli
Distanz: 12 km Höhe (+): 450m Höhe (-): 450m
Travel by private coach to Cassinasco, a sleepy village with magnificent views over the wild Bormida Valley. This unspoilt landscape offers a contrast to the well-ordered vineyards of the Langhe. It is characterized by old trade routes and tells of an eventful past with its medieval monasteries, Saracen towers and mighty fortresses. Your hike takes you along scenic paths through the Bormida Valley to Monastero Bormida, a village steeped in history that grew up around an imposing monastery complex and a medieval bridge. The route continues to Bubbio with its striking fortress and past a picturesquely situated pilgrimage church, which offers a sweeping view over the valley. On the way, enjoy a small lunch with regional specialties. In the afternoon, you will head to Canelli. This lively town is not only famous for its Moscato dAsti, but above all for its cathedrals of wine (Unesco World Heritage Site): underground vaults, up to 20 kilometers long, dug deep into the tufa and offering perfect conditions for Italian champagne. In a traditional winery, you will experience a guided tour and then a tasting of this fine sparkling wine with bottle fermentation. Dinner is free.
Day 3
Monday: Barbaresco
Distanz: 10 km Höhe (+): 400m Höhe (-): 400m
This hike takes you through the beautiful wine landscape of the Barbaresco wine-growing region, very close to your hotel. After breakfast, the bus will take you to the picturesque village of Neive, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Here, between rolling hills and endless vineyards, you start your hike, which takes you past well-tended rows of vines and old farms and offers impressive views of the castles of the Roero and the Tanaro valley. After around an hour and a half, you will reach the historic village of Barbaresco. Here you have time to stroll through the small alleyways, perhaps climb the famous tower and let your gaze wander over the surrounding vineyards. You then continue your hike and arrive at the Montaribaldi winery. During an exclusive guided tour, you will immerse yourself in the world of Barbaresco: you will visit the cellar, learn more about the traditional production process and taste the elegant wines of the house, especially the Barbaresco, which is considered one of the best in the region and is appreciated for its fine aromas and great elegance.
Day 4
Tuesday: Barolo in the heart of the Langhe and the king of wines
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 100m Höhe (-): 450m
Today you will experience one of the highlights of your Piedmont hiking tour: you will head to La Morra, which is perched on top of a hill and is known as the balcony of the Langhe. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view over the vine-covered hills, which stretch like a green mosaic to the white peaks of the Alps. The old town of La Morra with its narrow streets, historic churches and small cafés invites you to linger — a perfect start to the day. Your hike takes you along the famous Barolo trail through the region’s most beautiful vineyards. You walk past picturesque hamlets, old farms and well-tended rows of vines. New views of the majestic castles and the small villages that lie like islands in the middle of the vineyards open up again and again — this is the typical Langhe landscape, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. A visit to the Veglio winery awaits you in the afternoon. Here you will experience the world of Barolo: during a guided tour of the cellar, you will learn more about the philosophy of the winemaking family, who have been working with great care and according to organic principles for generations. Of course, you will taste the fine wines — a pleasure that reflects the soul of Piedmont. At the end of the day, you reach the small, charming village of Barolo. The imposing castle, once the seat of the Falletti family, towers over the village and is now home to the renowned WiMu wine museum and the Enoteca Regionale. Here, the history of Barolo comes to life and you can soak up the special atmosphere of this legendary wine village.
Day 5
Wednesday: Dolce far niente a day at leisure
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Today you have the day completely at leisure, ideal for experiencing Piedmont as you wish. If you fancy an excursion, you can visit the elegant city of Turin: Magnificent squares, impressive museums and the special flair of the Piedmontese capital await you here. Nature lovers may be drawn to the nearby Alpine valleys, where you can discover impressive mountain landscapes and charming villages — perfect for a short hike or simply to marvel and enjoy. For those who like to get hands-on, a cooking course at a local agriturismo is a great option: Here you will learn how to prepare traditional dishes such as tajarin, agnolotti or bonet — a real highlight for connoisseurs. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, enjoy a walk through the surrounding vineyards or simply unwind by the pool at your hotel — a real treat, especially on sunny days. This makes the day the perfect complement to your hiking tour in Piedmont. Dinner is also free.
Day 6
The Roero region and its wines
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 300m Höhe (-): 300m
Today you will discover the Roero, an area that lies north of the Langhe on the other side of the River Tanaro and boasts a varied landscape. Dramatic rock formations, in which fossils are often found, alternate with dense forests, ancient castles and picturesque vineyards. The Roero is not only known for its wines, but also for its fruit growing: The aromatic peaches in particular enjoy an excellent reputation throughout Italy. Your hike starts in Santo Stefano Roero and takes you along beautiful paths through the characteristic hilly landscape. A particular highlight is a visit to one of the largest chestnut trees in Italy, an awe-inspiring giant that has shaped the landscape for centuries. From here we head to the small village of Monteu. The old fortress, which towers on a hill above the village, tells of the region’s long history. A special treat awaits you in the afternoon: you will visit the Negro winery, a renowned family business that is one of the best wine producers in the Roero. Here you will taste the fresh, elegant Roero Arneis and some fine Nebbiolos.
Day 7
Friday: Truffles the gold of the Langhe
Distanz: 8 km Höhe (+): 150m Höhe (-): 150m
Today everything revolves around one of Piedmont’s most exclusive delicacies: the truffles of Alba. Together with an experienced tartufaio and his dog, you will embark on an exciting truffle hunt in the hazelnut groves of the Langhe. During the approximately two-hour trek, you will learn what is important when searching for the coveted tubers, why they are so rare and what makes them so special. The prices for white truffles fluctuate every year and often reach several hundred euros per 100 grams — a real gold of the Langhe. After a successful search, enjoy small snacks with truffles (black or summer truffles) accompanied by a glass of regional wine in the picturesque village of Roddi. Roddi is known for its university of truffle dogs, which you will also get to know. In the afternoon, Fabrizio invites us on a short tour of the town of Alba. The town is not only the center of the truffle trade, but also famous for its specialty stores, where you can buy Piedmontese delicacies to take home to your heart’s content.
