Along the Salz­Al­pen­Steig, which stret­ches from Chiem­see to Königs­see, you will not only dis­co­ver uni­que and impres­si­ve land­scapes, but also have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to learn lots of inte­res­t­ing facts about salt springs, salt depo­sits and the histo­ry of salt extra­c­tion and pro­ces­sing. During the five stages of this tour, you can fol­low in the foot­s­teps of salt and dis­co­ver the sights of the various places. The high­lights of this tour include unfor­gettable pan­o­r­amic views, of cour­se the two lakes Chiem­see and Königs­see, as well as the oppor­tu­ni­ty to get to know the tra­di­tio­nal aspects of this region. 

Itinerary / Stages

Indi­vi­du­al arri­val at the Chiemsee
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
A warm wel­co­me to the beau­tiful Chiem­gau regi­on. Over­night stay in Prien or Bernau. 
Ber­nau / Prien — Marquartstein
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 330m Höhe (-): 320m
If you have not spent the night in Prien today, take the train to Prien am Chiem­see in the mor­ning to the start­ing point of your first stage. During this hike, you will pass through the pic­tures­que vil­la­ges of Prien and Ber­nau and enjoy breath­ta­king views of the sur­roun­ding moun­ta­ins. This stage takes you through moor­land and forests abo­ve Ber­nau and Rottau befo­re you final­ly reach Kucheln, fol­lo­wed by Gras­sau and Mar­quart­stein. Over­night stay in Gras­sau or Marquartstein. 
Mar­quart­stein — Ruhpolding
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 370m Höhe (-): 1300m
After break­fast in the mor­ning, a trans­fer to Ber­gen is at your dis­po­sal. A cable car ride to the sum­mit of the Hoch­felln, known as the vie­w­ing ter­race of the Chiem­gau regi­on, awaits you the­re. During the appro­xi­m­ate­ly 20-minu­te dri­ve, you will alre­a­dy get a first impres­si­on of what awaits you on this hike: an impres­si­ve distant view of the sur­roun­ding moun­tain mas­sifs, vil­la­ges and land­scapes as well as a won­derful hike through the alpi­ne land­scape of the Hoch­felln. The trail leads you through den­se moun­tain pine forests, across wide alpi­ne mea­dows and through pic­tures­que light forests as you des­cend ste­adi­ly down the moun­tain. On the way, you pass the enchan­tingly situa­ted Felln-Alm and later con­ti­nue your hike along the Farn­bö­den-Alm. The rou­te takes you around the Reit­stein, which lies at an alti­tu­de of 1250 meters. Fur­ther down, you final­ly reach the fairy­ta­le-like Brand­wald forest, which is an impres­si­ve expe­ri­ence not only for youn­ger hikers with its num­e­rous caves and grot­tos. Always fol­low the signs to Ruh­pol­ding. Over­night stay in Mai­er­g­schwendt (a sub­urb of Ruh­pol­ding) or Ruhpolding.
Ruh­pol­ding — Inzell
Distanz: 15 km Höhe (+): 420m Höhe (-): 440m
The third stage of the Salz­Al­pen­Steig pro­mi­ses an exci­ting hike in the Chiem­gau Alps bet­ween Ruh­pol­ding and Inzell. Your rou­te takes you along the foot of the impo­sing Rausch­berg (1645 meters) until you reach the pic­tures­que Tau­ben­see lake. From the­re, the trail leads along beau­tiful paths through mon­ta­ne forests to the Fahr­ries­bo­den cha­pel and then con­ti­nues to Schmelz. From Schmelz, it is only a short distance to your stage desti­na­ti­on of Inzell. Over­night stay in Schmelz (a sub­urb of Inzell) or Inzell. 
Inzell — Bad Reichenhall
Distanz: 23 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 700m
The stage that lies ahead of you is extre­me­ly varied, but also chal­len­ging. It beg­ins in the idyl­lic cli­ma­tic health resort of Inzell and takes you through varied moor­land and green mea­dows to the impo­sing Weiß­bach Falls. Your rou­te runs along the Weiß­bach and through the impres­si­ve Weiß­bach Gor­ge, which even­tual­ly leads you to Lake Thum­see. The rou­te con­ti­nues over the Bür­ger­meis­ter­hö­he abo­ve Kirch­berg to the heart of Bad Reichenhall. 
Bad Rei­chen­hall — Königssee
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 1090m Höhe (-): 1100m
In the mor­ning, take the train to Bischofs­wie­sen. From here, the rou­te takes you direct­ly to the hid­den Königs­see lake via the pan­o­r­amic Grün­stein­hüt­te. Final­ly, take the public bus to your over­night accom­mo­da­ti­on in Berchtesgaden.

PRIEN: Con­ti­park P1 at Prien train sta­ti­on. Approx. 22 EUR per week. BERNAU: Free par­king lot at the mini golf cour­se. Plea­se ask your accommodation/hotel about other par­king opti­ons for the dura­ti­on of your hiking tour with Feu­er und Eis (addi­tio­nal cos­ts may apply). 
Tour cha­rac­ter
During the tour on the Salz­al­pen­steig you are repea­ted­ly in alpi­ne ter­rain. Appro­pria­te moun­tain equip­ment and stami­na are the­r­e­fo­re a pre­re­qui­si­te. As you hike for around 5 to 7 hours a day, a good basic level of fit­ness is important.
Other notes
To ensu­re a stress-free start to the trip, we recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening in most cases. Some tours start as ear­ly as mid­day, in which case we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re and will be hap­py to book an extra night for you at the same time. The indi­vi­du­al return jour­ney takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilo­me­ters are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al kilo­me­ters cover­ed. This tour is not sui­ta­ble for peo­p­le with redu­ced mobility.

If a mini­mum num­ber of par­ti­ci­pan­ts is requi­red for the tour to take place, this is sta­ted under Pri­ces and ser­vices. If the mini­mum num­ber of par­ti­ci­pan­ts is not rea­ched, we reser­ve the right to can­cel the trip up to four weeks befo­re the date of arri­val. We recom­mend that you do not orga­ni­ze your arri­val and depar­tu­re until after this dead­line has passed.
