From land­mark to land­mark, our hiking tour along the Way of St. James leads through the Salz­burg Alpi­ne foot­hills, the Bava­ri­an Ruper­ti­winkl and past an impres­si­ve moun­tain world to Tyrol in the Inner Moun­ta­ins. Pil­grims were and still are wel­co­me guests in the once prin­ce-arch­bi­shop­ric of Salz­burg and are rich­ly reward­ed for their efforts. On the Salz­burg Way of St. James, you will find inte­res­t­ing reli­gious sites, impres­si­ve paths and magi­cal land­scapes whe­re you can find inner peace.

Distanz: 23 km Höhe (+): 340m Höhe (-): 360m
Trans­fer to the pro­vin­cial bor­der to Ober­ho­fen am Irr­see, whe­re the Salz­burg Way of St. James beg­ins. First, your hike takes you past a hil­ly land­scape down to Lake Wal­ler­see, who­se shores you fol­low through the idyl­lic natu­re reser­ve to Eugendorf. 
Eugen­dorf — Salzburg
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 130m Höhe (-): 250m
You can alre­a­dy see the moun­ta­ins in the distance, which you will hike past over the next few days. Take a lei­su­re­ly stroll down to Salz­burg, whe­re you will find magni­fi­cent churches, beau­tiful alley­ways and squa­res and enjoy a por­ti­on of Salz­bur­ger Nockerln dum­plings. We recom­mend a detour to the Maria Plain pil­grimage church, which towers high abo­ve Salzburg. 
Salz­burg — Bad Reichenhall 
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 190m Höhe (-): 140m
Your hike leads out of the city in the direc­tion of Unters­berg. At Mar­zoll Cast­le, you cross the bor­der into the Bava­ri­an Ruper­ti­winkl regi­on befo­re arri­ving in the salt metro­po­lis of Bad Rei­chen­hall, which is well worth a visit. Here you can relax in the warm bri­ne water of the ther­mal baths, visit the spa gar­dens and tour the old salt works. 
Bad Rei­chen­hall — Unken
Distanz: 18 km Höhe (+): 180m Höhe (-): 140m
Today you fol­low the Saal­ach back into Salz­bur­ger Land. You hike past the Saal­ach­see lake and deeper and deeper into the moun­ta­ins. Your path part­ly runs direct­ly along the banks of the Saal­ach, which flows wild­ly and roman­ti­cal­ly through the rocks. 
Unken — Waidring
Distanz: 21 km Höhe (+): 380m Höhe (-): 160m
You con­ti­nue to fol­low the Saal­ach, pas­sing gor­ges and water­falls on the way to Lofer. The tran­quil moun­tain vil­la­ge, sur­roun­ded by the impres­si­ve peaks of the Lofe­rer Stein­ber­ge, the Rei­ter Alpe and the Lofe­rer Alm, invi­tes you to take a break. The rou­te then clim­bs up to the Strub­pass, whe­re you now hike along the Tyro­lean Way of St. James to Waidring. 
Waid­ring — St. Johann in Tirol
Distanz: 26 km Höhe (+): 320m Höhe (-): 450m
Past the Pil­ler­see lake with its glis­tening waters and famous pil­grimage church, the rou­te leads to St. Jakob, whe­re the migh­ty Jakobs­kreuz cross greets you from the moun­tain peak far abo­ve. A pan­o­r­amic path leads you to St. Johann in Tirol, idyl­li­cal­ly situa­ted bet­ween the Kitz­bü­hel Alps and the rocky peaks of the Wil­der Kai­ser massif.

Tra­vel by train to Salz­burg and by bus in approx. 45 minu­tes to the Tru­mer Seen.
Tour cha­rac­ter
The tours are easy, with two lon­ger stages awai­ting you, which can be shor­ten­ed by bus if desi­red. You walk most­ly on asphalt paths, forest tracks and hiking trails. The dif­fe­ren­ces in alti­tu­de are very small as you hike in the valley. 
High­lights
The Way of St. James takes you to the Tru­mer Seen, Irr­see and Wal­ler­see lakes, whe­re you can enjoy water sports and swim­ming. In Salz­burg, you can stroll through the old town, while the view of the Wil­der Kai­ser near St. Johann in Tirol is enchanting. 
Other notes
To ensu­re a stress-free start to the trip, we recom­mend arri­ving at the start­ing point by ear­ly evening in most cases. Some tours start as ear­ly as mid­day, in which case we recom­mend arri­ving the day befo­re and will be hap­py to book an extra night for you at the same time. The indi­vi­du­al return jour­ney takes place on the last day of the tour. The kilo­me­ters are appro­xi­ma­te and may dif­fer from the actu­al kilo­me­ters cover­ed. This tour is not sui­ta­ble for peo­p­le with redu­ced mobility.
