Feuer und Eis partner tour

Salzkammergut circular hiking trail with CHARME

from 1.459,- per person

Immerse yourself in the Salzkammergut, which has developed into Austria’s oldest industrial landscape thanks to the white gold, salt, which has been mined here for thousands of years. Salt mining in the world-famous Hallstatt can be traced back to prehistoric times. Since the Middle Ages, pilgrims have sought out places of power in the Salzkammergut. The imperial family’s summer residence in Bad Ischl attracted many artists and celebrities who found peace and relaxation in this region. We invite you to follow in their footsteps.

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Individual arrival at the crystal-clear Wolfgangsee
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
You will receive your detailed travel documents at the hotel. A visit to St. Wolfgang on the northern shore of the lake of the same name is worthwhile in more ways than one. The sights are close together, such as the pilgrimage church, which is dedicated to St. Wolfgang from Regensburg. It houses art-historical treasures. Just opposite is the Hotel Weisses Rössl, to which a musical comedy was even dedicated in the 1930s. Enjoy a cup of coffee in one of the cafés to get you in the mood!
Day 2
With the cog railroad up the Schafberg
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
From St. Wolfgang, Austria’s steepest steam cog railroad takes you up the 1782-metre-high Schafberg in 35 minutes. The nostalgic steam locomotive leisurely makes its way up the almost six-kilometer-long route, while with a bit of luck you might even spot a chamois. Once at the top, you have the option of a scenic hike on the Schafberg plateau with views of seven Salzkammergut lakes. Afterwards, there is still time for refreshments in the mountain restaurant before the Schafbergbahn takes you back down into the valley.
Day 3
Along the silk thread border to Bad Ischl
Distanz: 16 km Höhe (+): 234m Höhe (-): 296m
Today’s hike leads through St. Wolfgang in Upper Austria via Berau and along the panorama trail on the Bürglstein, which runs — particularly picturesquely — directly along the water. Crossing the Seidenfaden border into the province of Salzburg, you reach Strobl. From there, the hiking trail follows the river Ischl to Pfandl, where salt was boiled as early as the 12th century. This is followed by the Elisabeth Forest Trail to Bad Ischl, which was laid out in 1899. Empress Sissi often visited this natural site during her summer retreat in Bad Ischl. (It is possible to take the bus from Strobl to Bad Ischl. Payment on site)
Day 4
Up the Katrin, Ischl’s local mountain
Distanz: 4 km Höhe (+): 290m Höhe (-): 245m
Short walk along the Traun promenade to the valley station of the charming Katrin cable car. A 15-minute ride takes you to a true hiking paradise at 1,400 m above sea level. The narrow, elongated Katergebirge mountains offer hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers a fine and manageable selection of trails. A circular hike offers unique views of seven lakes in four valleys and three countries.
Day 5
At the mystical Lake Hallstatt
Distanz: 19 km Höhe (+): 127m Höhe (-): 102m
The ride on the Salzkammergutbahn to the climatic health resort of Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt takes passengers into the inner Salzkammergut. Today you can enjoy the lake landscape shaped by the ice age glacier ice and the impressive mountain backdrop up close. Following the eastern shore path, there are always freely accessible bathing spots for a refreshing dip in the lake. The route leads via Obertraun to Hallstatt. The almost perfect ensemble of narrow alleyways, historic houses, lake panorama and the cultural heritage from the Hallstatt period make this town world-famous. During the guided tour of the oldest salt mine in the world, you will enter a fascinating underground world. Finally, hike down the salt mountain to the town center of Hallstatt.
Day 6
Exploring the Krippenstein at an altitude of 2,000 meters
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Hike to the southern end of Lake Hallstatt and cable car ride up to the Krippenstein. This takes you in no time at all to the Dachstein ice caves, a world formed from water, ice and stone. After visiting the caves, you can continue your journey to the summit of the Krippenstein, which offers sunny hiking trails and spectacular viewing platforms, such as the 5 Fingers or the World Heritage Spiral. It is also possible to hike to the Gjaid valley station, where there are always views of the majestic Dachstein glacier (the Gjaid mountain station route opens from around mid-June; if you arrive before mid-June, this section is not included (not necessary to reach the caves). Return by cable car to Obertraun and hike to Hallstatt. (Alternative return by bus or boat — payment on site).
Day 7
Wild and romantic Echerntal
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 183m Höhe (-): 184m
A well-signposted circular trail leads from Hallstatt to the Waldbachstrub waterfalls. From a mighty 90-metre-high gorge, which is divided into three stages, the masses of water roar and thunder down into the depths. Once there, you can admire the natural spectacle of the waterfalls up close. The bus takes you back to Bad Ischl.
Day 8
Sankt Wolfgang pilgrimage site
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
The Ischl narrow-gauge railroad once connected the imperial city with Lake Wolfgangsee. Today the bus takes you back to St. Wolfgang. The utilization of bee products was of particular importance here. Pilgrims from far and wide would sacrifice candles in front of the altar of St. Wolfgang and buy gingerbread as a souvenir. The tradition of gingerbread baking in St. Wolfgang dates back to the High Middle Ages. Try this delicacy in one of the cafés! (Individual departure or additional nights; bus payable locally if your car is parked in St. Wolfgang)
