Itinerary / Stages

Meeting point with the guide at 12:30 pm in Gmund at the train station, hike to Tegernsee, Bad Wiessee or Kreuth
Distanz: 7 km Höhe (+): 120m Höhe (-): 120m
Your Alpine crossing adventure begins on the day of your arrival. At lunchtime, you will meet your guide who will accompany you on your journey. Your first half-day hike takes you along the Tegernsee High Trail, which stretches around 100 meters above the northern shore to today’s destination of Tegernsee. Fantastic views await you during this easy introductory stage. So get your camera or smartphone ready to capture the first panoramic images. Finally, a visit to the brewery directly on the lake awaits you. Afterwards, take the boat to your overnight accommodation in Bad Wiessee or continue on foot or by bus to Kreuth if you are staying overnight.
Kreuth — Achenkirch
Distanz: 17 km Höhe (+): 820m Höhe (-): 770m
Our transfer to the starting point of your hike for the second stage to Kreuth-Siebenhütten begins in the morning. After walking just a few meters on a forest path, a well-maintained hiking trail leads you through a mixed forest and into the first alpine pasture region to the unmanaged Gaisalm. Follow the signs in the direction of Schildenstein/Blaubergalm along a gentle mountain ridge to finally reach the border ridge between Bavaria and Tyrol, which is characterized by the characteristic mountain pine vegetation. During this hike, impressive panoramic views open up, ranging from the Alpine foothills of Lake Tegernsee to the Karwendel and Zillertal Alps. After just over 3 hours of hiking, you can take a break at the rustic Blaubergalm, which is the only refreshment stop on this entire stage. You then descend into the valley on easy paths through the former hunting grounds of the Habsburgs to finally reach Achenwal or Achenkirch.
Achenkirch — Fügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 120m Höhe (-): 100m
Today’s stage on the western shore of Lake Achensee is often described as the most beautiful hiking trail in Tyrol and will enchant you. From your hotel in Achenkirch, you hike along a well-maintained path with easy ascents and descents, including short sections with steps and handrails. This path leads you to the Gaisalm, the only alpine pasture in Tyrol that can only be reached on foot or by boat. This trail is characterized by a fascinating variety of landscapes, including waterfalls, varied vegetation and moraine hills that rise almost above the Tyrolean fjord. Although there are opportunities for swimming, you should bear in mind that Lake Achensee, which lies at 1,000 meters above sea level, rarely reaches more than 18 degrees water temperature and can therefore require some effort. Via Pertisau and along the lakeside path, you finally reach the southern end of the lake in Maurach, which also serves as the starting point for the nostalgic Achenseebahn, a steam cog railroad. After leaving the Achensee region, you continue your journey by train and bus and reach your stage destination of Fügen in the Zillertal.
Fügen Spieljoch Hochfügen
Distanz: 14 km Höhe (+): 350m Höhe (-): 740m
After breakfast, head from your accommodation in Fügen, which is also known as the first vacation region in the Zillertal, to the Spieljoch cable car. From there, you float effortlessly in the gondola up to the Spieljoch at an altitude of almost 1,850 meters and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains of the Zillertal, the Karwendel and Rofan mountains and even as far as the Kitzbühel Alps and the Kaiser Mountains. A wonderful hiking trail leads you between mountain pines, alpine roses, Swiss stone pine trees and granite stones to the Gart Alm (where we recommend the Kaiserschmarren) and then on to the Loassattel. From there, continue to the Loas Alpine inn. After a well-earned rest and a refreshment stop, you continue your hike on partly shady paths and finally reach today’s stage destination of Hochfügen, which is known above all for its winter sports facilities.
Hochfügen — Melchboden — Mayrhofen/Aschau
Distanz: 11 km Höhe (+): 840m Höhe (-): 300m
Today your hike takes you through an alpine pasture region that is only preserved in its original form here in the Alps and offers fascinating insights into the historical cultivation of alpine pastures. While you are accompanied by rocks that have been polished by the glacier since time immemorial, you finally reach the Sidanjoch. Near the Rastkogelhütte hut, an impressive distant view of the Inntal valley, the Karwendel mountains and the Tux Alps opens up. After a short ascent to the Mitterwandskopf, you follow a picturesque path that leads past ice-age formations, varnishes and along a mountain ridge until you finally reach the Melchboden. From here, take the bus down the Zillertaler Höhenstraße into the valley. Depending on where you are staying overnight, you can continue your journey either by bus or on the Zillertalbahn to Aschau or Mayrhofen.
Mayrhofen/Aschau — Schlegeis — Pfitschtal
Distanz: 13 km Höhe (+): 480m Höhe (-): 820m
Today is the day on which you will actually cross the main Alpine ridge, the highlight of your crossing of the Alps. In the morning, you will travel comfortably by bus along the toll road to the Schlegeis reservoir at 1,800 meters above sea level, where you will begin today’s stage. The imposing dam wall, which was built in the early 1970s, serves as an energy and water supply and keeps one of Austria’s largest reservoirs in check, which is fed by the glaciers behind it. During the moderate ascent along the well-maintained hiking trail to the Pfitscherjoch, you are accompanied by rushing streams and impressive waterfalls, and you cross scree fields and rocky moraines in this almost surreal-looking landscape. Before reaching the Pfitscherjoch hut, which is open to the public, you cross the border to Italy and South Tyrol and reach the highest point of the day at 2,275 meters — the main Alpine ridge has been conquered. Your path then leads you through gentle alpine pastures and later through shady mixed forest as you hike down the first section of the Pfitschtal valley. Finally you reach your accommodation in St. Jakob.
Pfitschtal — Sterzing
Distanz: 20 km Höhe (+): 140m Höhe (-): 640m
The last stage takes you along the valley floor of the Pfitsch Valley, on a gentle, downhill path that is always accompanied by the rushing Pfitsch stream. Shady forest passages, green meadows next to picturesque farmhouses and historic stone churches await you on this stage. To round off this hike, a short climb awaits you in Flains, which then takes you directly to the picturesque center of Sterzing. And then you’ve done it — you’re the finisher of the Alpine crossing from Tegernsee to Sterzing. Congratulations, we congratulate you on this impressive success.
