Water bike trail — Salt loop with luggage transfer

from 878,- per person

The salt route is all about the white gold. Where and how salt was mined, how it was transported and which towns it made rich. Did you know that Upper Bavaria was once one of the European centers of the salt trade? Salt, especially that from Bad Reichenhall, brought wealth to the people and towns. Even the city of Munich owes its foundation in 1185 to salt. And as salt is also good for your health, there are numerous spas along this route where you can relax and take a deep breath — your respiratory tract will love these salty moments! With so much salt, water is of course a must: Wöhrsee, Chiemsee, Simssee and the Adelholzen water world are also at the feet of cyclists here.

Itinerary / Stages

Day 1
Individual arrival in Munich
Distanz: 0 km Höhe (+): 0m Höhe (-): 0m
Individual arrival in Munich and exploration of the city.
Day 2
Munich — Bad Feilnbach/Rosenheim area
Distanz: 73 km Höhe (+): 460m Höhe (-): 470m
You leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind you and head south into Munich’s surrounding countryside. As soon as you leave the city limits behind you, you cycle through slightly hilly, green foothills of the Alps, fields, small forests and occasional sweeping views. After about a medium distance, you reach the region around the Salzschleife water cycle path, which runs along watercourses, canals and former salt transportation routes. Here you can really feel the theme of salt and water: salt springs, pipelines and transport routes were once developed here, today you cycle leisurely through the areas that were shaped by the “white gold”. The route remains mostly flat to moderately uphill, ideal for a relaxed day of cycling. You follow the marked route of the water cycle paths, enjoy quiet passages away from major roads, cross small bridges, see watercourses and feel the tranquillity of the landscape. The closer you get to Bad Feilnbach, the more you immerse yourself in the valley and Alpine foothills: the first hills appear, the air seems clearer and the mountains appear in the background. Finally you reach Bad Feilnbach, a beautiful end point in a quiet location with regional flair.
Day 3
Bad Feilnbach/Rosenheim area — Wasserburg
Distanz: 52 km Höhe (+): 200m Höhe (-): 270m
From Bad Feilnbach, you roll relaxed through the foothills of the Alps, past orchards and small farms. The mountains slowly recede behind you as the landscape opens up and appears wider. You follow quiet byways through small villages, with gentle undulations that make the route varied but easy to ride. The further north you go, the more the typical Inn region dominates the landscape. Small streams and damp meadows appear again and again between wooded areas and wide fields, picking up on the water theme of the salt loop. The route runs away from major roads, so you are mainly in quiet, rural surroundings. Shortly before Wasserburg, the landscape becomes particularly attractive once again. The paths gently descend towards the Inn Valley, and you will soon recognize the striking river bend in which Wasserburg’s colourful old town is located. You finally reach the town via pleasant access roads and cycle into one of the most beautiful small towns in Upper Bavaria.
Day 4
Wasserburg — Dorfen
Distanz: 73 km Höhe (+): 600m Höhe (-): 580m
From Wasserburg, you follow the Inn upstream and cycle through the wide Inn Valley with its meadows, fields and small forests. The paths remain predominantly flat and quiet, always with beautiful views of the river and its side arms. You reach Mühldorf am Inn, whose striking town square invites you to take a break. After Mühldorf, you leave the Inn valley and head west towards Dorfen. The landscape becomes slightly hilly and more open, characterized by small villages, forests and water-rich meadows. On pleasant side roads, you finally roll relaxed into the market town of Dorfen, which forms a harmonious end to the stage with its historic center.
Day 5
Dorfen — Munich
Distanz: 63 km Höhe (+): 310m Höhe (-): 220m
From Dorfen, you initially follow quiet paths through the wide rolling hills of the Erdinger Land. The route remains pleasant to ride and leads through small villages, fields and sparse woodland. Small streams and damp meadows accompany you again and again, continuing the water theme of the salt loop. The closer you get to the outskirts of Munich, the gentler the terrain becomes. You cycle through the Erdinger Moos and later through extensive green spaces, which slowly merge into the first residential areas. The route mainly uses side roads and eventually leads you into the city on comfortable cycle paths. At the end, you cycle relaxed into Munich and reach the starting point of the salt loop again.
Day 6
Individual departure

Additional information

Tour character
The WasserRadlWege through Upper Bavaria connect some of the most beautiful cycle paths in Upper Bavaria. They follow well-known cycle routes such as the Isar-Inn Panorama Trail, Sempt-Mangfall Cycle Trail, Inn Cycle Trail, Sempt-Isen Cycle Trail and the Isar Cycle Trail. Some sections of the route are also on minor roads with little traffic. The differences in altitude along the route are manageable, even if the hilly terrain offers challenging but entertaining climbs here and there. The difficulty of the stages is determined by their length.
